Inc. Newsletter Page 3 October 2014 By Randy Seufert Well it sure has been a beautiful Fall, these last few weeks. About time after the wet cold summer we had. It was a nice day for an auction too. We had a room full of people and lots of bags of fish, plants and supplies. We moved through them at a good pace and at the end 1140 items were sold. Thanks to everyone who sold and all that attended and purchased all the items. For those that got the items up to the auctioneers, chit writers and runners, thank you. For Ed and Jim that took care of registration and computer work, and Teri for sorting all the chits, thank you. Thanks to Peter and Tom for running the Fishy Fishy Raffle. Mark and Mary Ann did a great job as usual in the kitchen, but who had much time to eat, oh yea the 2 guys up front selling the stuff. Thanks Bill for sticking in there all day with me to sell all the items. It’s always fun, but is a long day. I know my arm was hurting on Monday. It was nice an hour after the auction was over, all in line had been taken care of, and we all were out the door. Great Job gang, guess we should have an auction February 15th As you all know elections are coming up in November. We will be looking for some important positons to be filled. It’s time for members to step up, and help lead the club onward, and upward. We have a great bunch of members, and after hearing so many clubs get few members at meetings, or participation in activities, it is nice to have all of you on board. Let’s keep growing, setting goals that we can obtain, and plan for the future of the hobby. Nominations will be taken at the October meeting and elections with nominations from the floor will be in November. Well time to wrap this up. See you at the meeting. Inc. Newsletter Page 5 October 2014 By Tom Heisler Special thanks to the members that took the time this month to contribute some great articles and pictures to the newsletter. You will be seeing them in the coming months. I know I cannot please everyone and I am trying to work out the kinks and make the newsletter better with each issue. I will email the newsletter each month as soon as it is finished and it should be posted on our website shortly after that ...most likely by 10th of each month, so you can also look for it on the website. The newsletter is attached to the email in .pdf format. If you do not have a .pdf viewer you may download a free .pdf reader directly from adobe at http://get.adobe.com/reader Logistically, I have not figured out a way to have the newsletter professionally printed and delivered (economically) as fast as I had hoped. Therefore, there will be a limited supply of printed copies available at the meetings for people that just love to hold paper when they read, do not have email, cannot get to a library, or does not know a friend, relative, or neighbor that will let them use their internet. If you fall into this category and cannot make it to the meeting, you may call me before the meeting and I will try to save a copy for you. Wouldn’t it be great to have one of your pictures featured in a publication? I need pictures, articles, and content for the newsletter. If anyone has any content (articles or information) for the newsletter that would benefit the club, please call me or send by email to TfcecTom@gmail.com The Deadline for each newsletter is the first of the month. Photo by Antonio Martina Oscars guarding fry ~5~ Tropical Fish Club of Erie County. Inc. Newsletter Page 6 October 2014 was a burgeoning bubble nest. Several of my female gouramis are heavily gravid with eggs so this made sense. As I watched one of the largest flirted with our opaline male whom my husband named Bruce and began breeding. Apparently I was too late to catch that spawn. I stood there watching the eggs getting eaten eagerly by everyone in the tank, including my few angels left in the tank. Bruce after uncurling from his lady friend, spied his future offspring's' demise. He rushed forward, ramming my unsuspecting platinum right behind the gill and killing it instantly. I would have never thought a fish even in breeding prime would never have the strength capable of killing an angel. But as I watched it's lifeless body drifting down, there could be no other conclusion. Now, anytime I see any sign of a bubble nest in the corner Bruce is removed with a lady friend for everyone's safety. I had lost my game of Clue, the perpetrator wasn't the rope fish in his rocky den with the sharp teeth, but Bruce the gourami in the corner with his bubble nest. Never underestimate the quiet ones! t ~6~ Visiting ARVAS(The Allegheny Valley Aquarium Society) Tropical Fish Club of Erie County. Inc. Newsletter Page 7 October 2014 By Kim Ball It was a beautiful drive to go visit ARVAS and do a presentation on axolotl care and breeding. I took my dad as copilot and 6 of my best male axolotls. When I got there the whole club turned out to help me unload tank, buckets, and other related equipment. t Everyone was super friendly and asked great questions. While their club is smaller than ours it was obvious that we all share the same Gold Lyretail Mollies By Bonnie Gifford Photo by Donna Czarnecki This is a great fish that does very well in a community tank. I keep five of them in a 15 gallon balloon tank. I usually get about 80 fry. This time I got 79 the first day and four days later, I got 63 more. A few days after that she gave me 12 more. ~7~ love for aquariums and the critters that reside in them. October 12th is their annual auction and I am definitely going to come back to see what everyone has! Both the fry and adults do well in water that is 80-82 degrees farenheit. They are very easy to breed but are very prone to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis also known as ick. I have been mating these fish and am trying to get all gold lyretails. The past two spawns the mollies have come out black and orange(gold) or all black. Of the five mollies, two of them are all gold. I also have a one albino, she is gravid now and I am hoping I will get a few albinos. Picture Page Auction September 2014 Tropical Fish Club of Erie County. Inc.
