GREETINGS,
I want to publicly thank Mrs. Amber Fluth,
along with the rest of the staff and students for
their hard work on the Tri-Valley Veterans’ Day
program. Thank you to the community for joining
us and sharing in this event. And, of course, a
huge thank you to our veterans for their service.
I understand that some school districts
choose to not be in session for Veterans’ Day. I
am a firm believer that our students gain a
valuable experience by honoring our district’s
veterans during this day. In our district, students
are exposed to recognitions, history lessons, and
other activities to honor our veterans. I received many positive comments
from veterans at the conclusion of our Veterans’ Day program. I have
taken many opportunities to ask Veterans at our program for their opinions
on the school program versus not having school on this date. The
responses I have received have been with resounding support to keep our
program as it is currently. I would like to encourage anyone and everyone,
who may be interested, to attend the program in the future.
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday
season. I hope everyone enjoys their time with their families, loved ones
and friends over the holidays. If you are traveling, please be safe and I
hope you arrive to your destinations without any problems. I also hope the
return trip back to the home of the Mustangs is just as safe.

MESSAGE FROM MR. PFLANZ
This month’s message relates to our dress code. Schools have always had
dress codes and some rules were made for safety precautions, others simply to
regulate indecent attire. The Tri-Valley School District is of the opinion that proper
grooming and dress relates to healthy school attitudes and the best learning
environment. Good grooming and dress are the responsibility of both parent and the
student. Proper attire is to be worn by all students; therefore, student dress should
always be in good taste and appropriate for the business of learning.
Tri-Valley School Districts’ concern for health, safety, and well-being of all
students extends to student dress. We, therefore, offer these guidelines in a helpful way. Under State
guidelines, schools have the responsibility to take action against improper dress which:

is disruptive to the school program.
is a health hazard.
is damaging to school property, equipment or reputation.
is obviously or blatantly indecent or distracting.
Our guidelines indicate that all clothing and accessories be clean, neat, in good taste, and age
appropriate. Attire should not be extreme to the extent that it focuses attention on the wearer. The dress
code policy contains a list of inappropriate articles of clothing and accessories that are expressly forbidden.
This list is not inclusive and the sole discretion rests with the district to make a determination on a case-bycase basis.
•
Students may not wear clothing with writing, slogans, pictures, or symbols that depict alcohol, drugs,
obscenities, vulgarity, racism, sex, violence or gang affiliation. Visible tattoos will fall under the same
guidelines.
•
Students may not wear clothing that is revealing. Garments that are cut low and expose visible
cleavage, midriff, undergarments or sit off the shoulder are not allowed.
•
Tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, halter tops, strapless/tube tops and see through clothing are not
allowed.
•
Yoga pants, spandex pants must be worn with tops that extend past the front inseam.
•
Spandex shorts will not be allowed unless covered by shorts that extend past the front inseam.
•
Pajama pants may not be worn.
•
Students may not wear pants in a sagging manner (below hips).
•
No jackets, coats or outer wear may be worn during the school day and must be placed in the
student’s locker.
•
No hats, hoods, caps, bandanas, sunglasses or gloves may be worn while in school.
•
Students may not wear bicycle chains, wallets with chains attached, jewelry or accessories with
spikes.
Violations of the dress policy:
•
Students will be asked to change or put away the offending item. It may be necessary to call a
parent/guardian to provide alternate clothing.
•
Students may be given an alternate item of clothing to wear for the day.
•
Multiple violations or refusal to comply may be handled as insubordination and parents will be
notified.

MEDIA CENTERS:
GREETINGS FROM TRI-VALLEY ELEMENTARY
First, we need to celebrate! On Wednesday,
October 29th, our elementary school had PERECT
ATTENDANCE! All 475 students were present. Thank
you for showing your child the importance of being at
school! Attendance is a major factor in student
success. Every absence can impact your childs’
achievement. Please continue to make school a
priority.
It was great to see so many of you at Parent
Teacher Conferences. Thank you for striving for open
communication between school and home. Our first
semester is moving right along. The end of the second
quarter is Friday, December 19th. As we end one
semester and begin another, we will be assessing the
elementary students in the area of reading and math
once again with the AIMSweb universal screening tool.
Reports will be sent to all families after testing is
complete and teachers will use the results to plan the
best interventions to help all students find success.
The elementary concert season is upon us! The
K-3rd graders will perform on Thursday, December 4th
at 7:00 pm. 4th-6th graders will take the stage on
Monday, December 8th at 7:00 pm. This concert will
include both the vocal and instrumental talents of our
elementary students. The 5th & 6th band together with
all 4th-6th vocalists will present one music filled evening!
Mr. Van Moer directs our 4th-6th vocal music and Ms.
Bahnson is the conductor of the 5th & 6th band. Thank
you in advance for attending these concerts to support
your child’s efforts and enjoy some wonderful music at
the same time.
Please have a safe Holiday Season. The students
will be on winter break starting December 20th and
continuing through January 4th. School will resume on
Monday, January 5th. My best wishes to you and your

Regular school board meetings are held the
second Monday of each month in the Board Room at
the Administration Office. All meetings are open to the
public. If a person desires to have an item placed on the
agenda, please contact the Administration Office one
week prior to the scheduled meeting.
A sincere Thank You to all for your support of the
Scholastic Book Fair. We took in almost $5900 in sales
from the Book Fair and All For Books donations. Our
school receives 55% of the profits to purchase materials
for our libraries. Sales resulted in nearly $3200 in
books for our students and staff. Again, thank you for
supporting the Scholastic Book Fair and reading.
The holidays are fast approaching and so are the
breaks from school. Be sure to make some time to get
cozy and read on the cold winter nights ahead and
during Christmas break. Even though school is out,
Siouxland Libraries will be open during much of the
break. Check out some new books from your local
public library branch. Have a great holiday season from
the Tri-Valley Media Center.

GEORAPHY BEE RETURNS TO TRI-VALLEY

What: School Competiton of the 2015 National
Geographic Bee
Where: Tri-Valley High School Gym
When: December 18, 2014, at 2:25 pm
For the 27th year, The National Geographic
Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for
students in the fourth through eighth grades in
thousands of schools across the United States and in
the five U.S. teritories, as well as in Department of
Defense Dependents Schools around the world. All
students in the fourth through eighth grades will be
taking a preliminary test in their class to determine 15
finalists for the Goegraphy Bee on December 18, 2014.
The champion of the Tri-Valley National
Geography Bee will advance to the next level of
comptetion, a written examination to determine state
competitiors. All school champions are eligible to win
the national championship and its first prize, a $50,000
college scholarship, at the national championship May
11-13, 2015, in Washington, D.C.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION NEWS

Tri-Valley students are putting their heads
together and starting to work on Destination
Imagination challenges for this coming spring. It’s
looking like we’ll have at least 5 Tri-Valley teams this
year. If anyone is still interested in putting a team
together, please let Mrs. Kendle know. Looking ahead,
the DI team members will be working concessions on
January 13th, the area IC practice day is on January
31st, and teams can register for that by emailing Mrs.
Kendle, and the Regional DI tournament is at Tri-Valley
on Saturday, March 14th. We’ll be needing over 100
volunteers to help make the tournament possible, so
please put that on your calendar and plan on helping in
some way. There will be many jobs that we will need
filled ranging from doorkeeper, needing no DI
experience, to appraisers. It’s a great program, and we
have some great creative problem-solvers that deserve
the best tournament we can put on!
On a state-wide note: the State DI Director, Cozy
Dorton, is hoping to retire after several decades of
dedicated service. The State DI board is looking for a
replacement for her, and anyone that might be
interested in helping us fill that position, or might even
have some ideas or questions, is being asked to contact
Maria Kendle, the SDDI Board President at
maria.kendle@k12.sd.us.

cancellation or postponement of school is made by

Weather and road conditions can be very
different in parts of the Tri-Valley School District. As
parents, if you feel the roads are too bad for your child
to be driving to school, please keep them home. Your
request will not affect their attendance in any way. We
do request, however, that as soon as conditions
improve you send your child for the remainder of that
day.

The third graders have been working hard with a
full schedule of classes keeping us busy each day.
Our mornings are filled with Reading, Language,
Spelling and Math.
Our Reading stories have been teaching us life
lessons about making the right decisions.
In Math we are memorizing our multiplication and
division facts.
Our Spelling words are getting harder each week.
We continue to study our words and work with word
puzzles to help us with these words.
We are looking forward to more snow and
Christmas with family and friends.

& NEW YORK CITY IN 2015!

On the morning of June 6, 2013, 28 Tri-Valley
students and adults boarded a plane bound for
Washington D.C. where they spent the next two days
exploring our nation’s Capital before moving on to
spend almost three days in New York City and getting
a chance to experience life in one of the world’s largest
cities. The group got to see and learn about a variety
of things during these five days including: a tour of the
most famous monuments in Washington D.C., a visit to
the Smithsonian Museums, a tour of Mt. Vernon and
downtown historic Alexandria, a tour of the Capitol and
the Library of Congress, seats at the Tony Award Show
Matilda, The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
top of the Empire State Building, Times Square at night,
and views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
among many other wonderful experiences. It was a jam
packed 5 days full of moments people on the trip will
never forget.
This trip is a fantastic way to get a chance to
experience two of our nation’s most amazing cities and
we hope you will be among the group who joins us in

MUSTANG VOLLEYBALL

First, the high school volleyball team would like to
thank all who supported our cause to fight breast cancer
with our October events. Athletics is more than a
hardwood floor, a ball and a net; it is about a purpose.
That purpose is defined in multiple ways, through
competitive play, teamwork, working toward a common
cause and also in bonding together to help our
community.
This year for our Honor’s Night we recognized 32
community individuals with our Honoree of the night
being Tri-Valley Elementary former secretary – Mrs.
Sharon Buss. We were honored to recognize her and
her family that night during our ceremony as a survivor
of breast cancer.
Through the various activities and events that took
place we are able to donate $1700.00 for the 2014
volleyball season to help in support and research of
breast cancer for the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer
Institute of Sioux Falls. We hope through the education
and continued support of this organization the TriValley volleyball team and community can help make a
difference. Thank you to all for your support.

5 Band students in grades 5-12 are doing our annual Celebrating Home fundraiser until Dec. 1st. Every
band student has an opportunity to go on a band trip once during their high school years. The next band trip will
be in the spring of 2017. Students should plan to fundraise a portion or all of the cost of the trip. Please plan on
approximately $600 for the cost of the trip. Start selling now so you’re not short funds in 2017! Money raised
from this fundraiser, as well as the frozen food fundraiser in February goes straight to the students’ account to pay
their way.

The All State Orchestra and Chorus
concert was held in Sioux Falls on October 31stNovember 1st. Students selected for the All
State Chorus at Tri-Valley were Kelsey Carlson,
Jaikob Davis, Josh Elledge, Paige Harkema,
Karima Hussen, Chastnee Lamer, Ioann
Shkinder & Mason Wieman.
Tri-Valley had one student selected to
perform in the All State Orchestra. Ruquia
Mulamba had the 2nd highest score in the state
of South Dakota on both the flute and piccolo.

The 57th annual Augustana
Honor Band was held on November 14th15th on the campus of Augustana College
in Sioux Falls. The final concert was
performed on stage of the Washington
Pavilion. The students selected for this

Monday November 17th we attended
District CDEs at West Central HS.
It was a fun night and the following people have moved on the
State in Pierre in Dec.!
• Mary Dybedahl received 1st in Extemporaneous Speaking!
• Malary McKenney received 2nd in Ag Broadcasting!
• Morgan Blake received 2nd in Public Speaking!
• Kaitlyn Schmeichel received 3rd in Job interview and was elected
District Treasurer!
9 National Convention
On October 28th two FFA members left on the State bus that
morning, followed by six others and Mrs.VanDerVliet, they set
off for Louisville, KY! They even stopped to see the St. Louis
Arch and had an amazing experience! They traveled over 2000
miles through seven states in four days!
