10 years ago this month, I announced that
Sierra Vista GAL was now AZgreyhounds.
Since that time, we have found forever homes
for more than 455 Greyhounds!
This has been an extraordinarily challenging
year for the program. As a result of taking in
3 Greyhounds identified as hypothyroid after
they arrived, a third with SLO, an immune
disorder, and Tonya, whose hock was broken
in two places, we nearly doubled the number
of special events we normally conduct to raise
additional funding. These included the
special fund raiser at CAL Ranch Store, the
fund raiser at Liberty Tax, the Fountain of
Blessings event, Kettle Corn, and our
Banquet, YOU raised over $9,000 in
donations!!
We have also conducted:

We publish an excellent newsletter 4
times a year
that a 4 year old female had gone down with a
broken leg the night before. I asked them to
transport her to Vet Specialty so our
orthopedic surgeon could evaluate her and do
whatever was necessary. Between pins,
screws and surgery and then post-op care, we
spent approximately $4,500. More pressing
was the need for a very special foster home to
care for her, as we were full up with healthy
hounds at that moment.
When what should appear, but a wonderful
angel in the form of Nicole and her family.
Providing love, care and extreme patience in
helping Tonya recover. It was time for Tonya
to move on to the next phase of her life.
We have, at any given moment, 8 foster
homes
Since last we met, we have found forever
homes for 11 Greyhounds!!
There are two individuals who, although their
efforts were completely different in nature,
made significant contributions. The one thing
they have in common, a very sweet little
female Greyhound named Tonya.
In April of this year, I received a call from
one of the kennels in Tucson, advising me

Patti has been involved in our program for several
years, supporting adoption days, fund raising and most
importantly, adopting 2 beautiful boys. When it was
time to move Tonya, Patti stepped up to foster her. It
wasn’t long before it became obvious Tonya had found
her “forever” home. Patti also become especially active by assisting with a special article in the Sierra
Vista Herald, helping with the special fund raiser at
CAL Ranch, and taking responsibility for organizing
the Liberty Tax fund raiser for Tonya.
We presented special plaques to them for their efforts.
Sometimes, when the need is great, someone steps up,
and does something totally unexpected to help. Fountain of Blessings, in the form of Bonnie & Joe McDermott, stepped up, organized a very special fund raiser,
and provided $1,200 in additional funding. They tell
me this will be an annual event to benefit the program.
Please give it up for Bonnie & Joe.
Also, on rare occasions, I let my mouth overload my brain
and discover that I don’t have the resources to complete the
mission. In those rare cases, I broadcast an email to the
group, and without fail two people respond and help me
through these small crisis. My personnel thanks to BEN &
SHARON!
AZgreyhounds has evolved into a very eclectic group.
Among our volunteers and foster homes, we now have several vet techs, the Fort Huachuca post vet, the Aviation
Company Commander, a Sierra Vista police officer, and an
ADOC officer!
As President of this august group, one of the few perks I
have is a staff, in the form of an excellent board of directors,
who help and guide me in the many challenges in operating
an extremely successful rescue and adoption group. I would
like to present your BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
COLLEEN (Special Advisor)
EMILY (Operations Director)
PANDORA (Secretary)
SANDRA (Vice President)
WENDY (Treasurer)
We would also like to acknowledge the recurring donations from the Microsoft Foundation, usually in the
form of $600 checks. This is the result of Cade’s efforts.
We were also notified that any retired Greyhounds registered in West Virginia that we take will result in a
$125.00 credit to our vet.
We were recently notified by the Greyhound Guild in
Phoenix, they were donating $650 from their annual
Renaissance Fair! (They are also in need of volunteers
for the fair. See me for details).
Last year we were approached about the Ironman Triathlon. One of our owners wanted to run the marathon
and donate the proceeds to AZgreyhounds. Ben, and
his support team, Sharon, donated the proceeds of
$1,280 to us!
Also, on rare occasions, I let my mouth overload my
