Print Form Very Influential Peer Application WHAT IS A VIP? A “Very Influential Peer” (VIP) is a member of the Student Development staff with specific responsibilities in the Office of New Student Services. VIPs are directly responsible to the Director of New Student Services as well as the Assistant. VIPs are assigned to mentor a First Year Seminar Class as well as attend, plan and/or facilitate programs and activities for first year students including the Freshmen 15 Series. Ideal VIPs: - Come from a variety of majors - Are involved with our campus community - Are willing to put themselves "out there" for our incoming students - Abide by the Code of Student Conduct - Adhere to the Statement of Student Responsibilities - Embrace learning, commit to civil behavior, and strive for enhanced personal development as demonstrated by being active and involved members of Oneonta campus life REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - A 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA as well as good academic and judicial standing - Must be returning to the College as an undergraduate for Fall 2014 Must reside on campus during the contract period Must have adequate knowledge of campus resources Ability to assume a leadership role for assigned projects and small groups Ability to maintain a positive and flexible attitude Ability to maintain position from April 21, 2014 - December 20, 2014 ROLE OF A VIP VIPs will be expected to perform the following First Year Seminar responsibilities including but not limited to: - Mentor first year students in a First Year Seminar course and in the FYE residence halls - Assist in First Year Seminar Course as assigned - Assist with Common Read Initiatives - Conduct small and large group discussions - Attend weekly meetings - Plan to meet students outside of class at events, programs and/or meetings - Hold office hours outside of class - Highlight and promote first year experience weekly themes - Promote and attend the Freshmen 15 series - Assist with other events and initiatives from the Office of New Student Services - Develop and implement events and activities for new students Page 1 Very Influential Peer Application VIP SELECTION TIMELINE 3/28 Applications Due by 4pm 4/9-11 Individual Interviews 4/13 Group Interview Workshop 4/14 Notification Letters Mailed out 4/21- 5/7 Mandatory Training Meetings, times/dates TBA 8/18-20 Mandatory VIP Fall Training 8/21-24 Orientation *All above dates are subject to change TRAINING INFORMATION: The VIP's will participate in training sessions during the spring semester. These sessions are designed to help you get acquainted with the VIP team and to become familiar with the expectations of the position. The August training is designed to prepare the staff to serve the students during the Fall 2014 semester.
