She is, of course, present at the birth of Jesus and at his death. She comes looking for her son in the temple when he’s twelve and again when he’s preaching. She lets him know that the time has come for his first miracle when he’s in Cana. She has more to say in this story of the annunciation than in any of the others, and in this one story we get more than a glimpse of the woman she would become in our memory—called on by millions, revered by all— an example of unparalleled obedience and openness to the movement of God in her life. It strikes me that, along with being the mother of God (the Orthodox Church uses the word theotokos, which means “God-bearer”), Mary is our example of the best response to the presence of God. We let him in; we show God hospitality in our very being; we allow God to change our lives in ways we cannot even imagine yet. The reality for most of us, though, is that in many times and places we have had the chance to welcome God in. Instead, we’ve shut God out because we thought something else was more important. Maybe it was power or wealth. Perhaps God was challenging us to move on a particular path, and we didn’t want to. Maybe our question for the week is, what would happen if I do as God asks? With four days left before Christmas, let us practice saying yes to God—for in doing this, we honor the mother of us all. Mary Katharine Deeley UU sundaybulletins@liguori.org U First Reading Genesis 15:1-6; 21:1-3 Abram and Sarah put faith in the Lord, and gave the name Isaac to their son. Your descendants shall be as numerous as the stars in the heavens. Second Reading Hebrews 11:8, 11-12, 17-19 The descendants of Abraham and Sarah are “as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore.” Abraham’s faith was tested. Gospel Luke 2:22-40 or 2:22,39-40 Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple to be consecrated. Simeon, a holy and pious man, took the child in his arms, and Anna, the prophetess, gave thanks to God. A LIGHT FOR REVELATION Mary and Joseph are diehard Jews, faithful in their observance of the law. We see them here in the Temple in Jerusalem for the dedication of the child and the ritual purification of his mother in accord with the law of the Lord. We meet also the righteous Simeon and Anna the prophetess who encounter the child and his parents in the Temple. Note Simeon’s reference to the child as a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel. Simeon also recognizes the opposition the child will encounter and the sorrow his mother will bear. Anna speaks a prophetic word about the child to all who awaited the redemption of Israel. Do we seek to alleviate the fear, confusion and panic that women facing unexpected pregnancies may be experiencing? Do our hearts ache for elderly patients in nursing homes who feel abandoned and unwanted, having no one to visit them? Our mission is to show each person the love of Christ. As uniquely created individuals, we each have unique gifts which we are called to use to share Christ’s love.” — Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., Chairman, USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, 2014 Respect Life Month Statement AN ACT OF GIVING At this time of year we especially like to reach out to those less fortunate. So many families in our community are in need during this Christmas Season. Please consider a donation to the Queen of Peace Food Pantry to help us provide items for a Christmas dinner to those less fortunate. A very thoughtful and kind parishioner will match up to $1000.00 for any donation made to the Food Pantry during the month of December. Donations may be brought to the Rectory, or put in the collection basket. Please detach below and be sure to include your name, address and gift amount of any denomination. Mark your envelope: FOOD PANTRY-ACT OF GIVING ATTN: MAUREEN HENNESSY. Your generosity and kindness are greatly appreciated. page 4 HOLY FAMILY HOSPITAL IN BETHLEHEM A Work of the Order of Malta A mere 500 yards from Jesus Christ’s birthplace, Holy Family Hospital stands as a beacon of hope and a haven for the defenseless throughout the Holy Land. Holy Family Hospital provides state-of-the-art maternity and neo-natal care to women of the region, without regard to religion, nationality, or ability to pay. Over 3,200 babies are delivered annually, many prematurely, at this Catholic teaching Hospital, serving women, children and families throughout the Bethlehem region, and at nearby UN refugee camps and Bedouin encampments in the desert. The Hospital, which opened its doors in 1895, was founded and continues to be served by the Daughters of Charity. In 1985, the Hospital was entrusted to the Order of Malta, the world’s oldest Christian charity which has successfully operated hospitals serving the sick and poor for over 900 years. This weekend, December 20th & 21st a second collection will be taken to benefit Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem. Like the Innkeeper’s wife who showed Mary to the stable, you, too, can be a modern-day innkeeper for atrisk and needy families in Bethlehem today. Please help care for these mothers and babies in the centuries old tradition by making a contribution to Holy Family Hospital this Advent season. Thank you and God bless you. To learn more about Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation, or to make an online donation, please visit us at: www.Birthplaceofhope.org. Your support is most appreciated. For information on becoming a part of the group, contact Peter Briody at (201)991-8892. As you prepare your home for Christmas we would like to share two Special Blessings with you and your family… Blessing for the Nativity God of every nation and people, from the beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent you Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thought to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen Blessing for the Christmas Tree Holy Lord, We come with joy to celebrate the birth of your Son, who rescued us from the darkness of sin by making the cross a tree of life and light. May this tree, arrayed in splendor, remind us of the life-giving cross of Christ that we may always rejoice in the new life that shines in our hearts. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen December 21, 2014-Fourth Sunday of Advent #621 page 8 A Wonderful Symbol & Tradition… The Christmas tree has its origins in the middle of the first thousand years of Christianity. In some regions it was part of great pageants and dramas, representing the paradise tree that stood in the center of the Garden of Eden. At the same time, it represented the tree of the cross, standing in the new paradise established by Christ’s death and Resurrection. In other regions it represented the one who connects heaven and earth, literally standing as a bridge between earth and eternity – the tree, rooted in the ground, with an angel or a star on its top. No matter what its origin, this symbol of Christmas now adorns houses, churches and public places. The lights of the tree as well are fundamental signs of Christ who is the light of the world. The tree is decorated in festive ornaments, and all of its brilliance reminds us of the one for whom we wait until the end of time.
