I would like to extend my warmest wishes for a wonderful and joyous
holiday season. After the holidays are over, come join us at the Recreation

Take a dip in the pool, shoot some hoops, or go for a run on one of
our state of the art treadmills. There are lots of activities for the entire
family to enjoy during these cold winter months. Keep those New Year’s
resolutions alive by trying a new group exercise class to help you achieve
those 2015 fitness goals.
We are pleased to offer some new youth and senior programming
as well as some family favorite events. Take a few minutes to browse
through this edition of the Rec Gazette. You can also find us online at

Did You Know?
• Auld Lang Syne is sung at midnight to toast in the New Year. The
song was composed by Robert Burns sometime in the 1700's. The
term means "old long ago" or "the good old days."
• On December 31, 1907 saw the very first ball lowering in Times
Square. The first New York ball weighed 700 pounds; 5 feet in
diameter and was made from wood and iron.
• The modern ball used today is made from Waterford Crystal and
weights over 1,000 pounds. There are over 9,000 LED lights,
but uses hardly any energy. The ball begins to drop at 11:59 and
completes the journey exactly at midnight to ring in the New Year.
• The ball was not lowered in 1942 and 1943 due to wartime

Athletes are accustomed to using their bodies and
muscles vigorously on a regular basis. The stretching
and breathing exercises in yoga help people maintain
strength and flexibility. That’s why we developed
YOGA for athletes, a one-hour class geared toward
the muscle groups that tend to be the tightest and
most frequently strained by athletes. These poses
are specifically designed for the strong, athletic body. The class is designed
for beginners as well as more advanced students with the option of a more
challenging component to each pose. YOGA for ATHLETES will strengthen
your body and increase flexibility in tight muscles

Happiness 101 (2 part series)
This course aims to present students with scientifically-based knowledge on
what factors make people happier and what factors detract from our happiness.
Its primary purpose is to equip participants with the knowledge and tools to
structure their lives so that they can live happier.
The first part will focus primarily on arriving at a personal understanding
of happiness, and learn how to become happier through “inner work”
(self-understanding, personal growth, etc).
The second part of the course solidifies and integrates what has been
learned in Part 1 but also concentrates on how external circumstances affect our
happiness and how we can structure our environment for happier living. Jim
