DECEMBER 2014
Talley Wins
Soccer Player
of the Year
NIC CARD-nival a HUGE success
Early estimates show net proceeds from event of more than $30,000;
all proceeds benefit scholarships and support for NIC athletic programs
The NIC Booster Club and Athletics
Department hosted the largest fundraiser
of the season for the athletics program on
December 10 at the Coeur d’Alene Inn,
and it was a resounding success. Attended
by nearly 300 guest, the casual carnival
atmosphere with games, heads and tails
beads, silent auction, life auction, and bids
for table desserts, was truly an enjoyable
evening.
Special thanks to Columbia Bank and
iShoutOut.com for sponsoring the $1,000
Gold Coin drawings. All proceeds from the
auction benefit scholarships and support
for the NIC athletic programs, with early
estimates of net proceeds over $30,000.
The Raise the Paddle cause generated
enough in donations to allow the athletics
department to purchase two Game Ready
® machines- therapy equipment which
aids athletes in accelerated healing.
Our special thanks to the many donors
and attendees that helped make this evening a tremendous success.
The Northwest Athletic Conference office announced that sophomore,
Adam Talley (Newman
Lake, WA), from North
Idaho College was selected as the Baden
Athlete of the Year for
NWAC Men’s Soccer.
ADAM TALLEY
Talley lead NIC to a second place finish at the NWAC Soccer Championships and led the league in goals scored with
20. Talley was also selected as the East Region
MVP, after leading the Cardinals to the East
Region title with a 17-1-2 record.
Seidl earns NJCAA
All-America Honors
Maddi Seidl, a sophomore setter from Castle
Rock, WA, was selected to the NJCAA
All-America
second
team announced after
the NJCAA national
tournament. Seidl was
also selected 1st Team
MADDI SEIDL
All-Region, leading the
Cardinals to a 12-12 record and fourth place
finish in the SWAC. Seidl was solid as a rock
this year for the Cardinals. She did an excellent job distributing the ball as four Cardinal
players averaged over 2 kills per set. She finished second in the SWAC averaging 10.02
assists/set, and was third on the team in digs
with 2.63 digs/set.

Tradition of Excellence
The holiday seasons are here and it’s a wonderful time for all of our NIC sports fans. The NJCAA
and National Soccer Coaches Association rankings are out, and as expected your Cardinal teams
are well represented. The fall season ended well
with an NWAC runner-up finish for men’s soccer
and a playoff berth for women’s soccer. The golf
team showed that they should be a factor in the
NWAC spring season with strong performances by
several individuals. Softball had a short fall season, but the roster is loaded with hitters. Volleyball
fell short of reaching the National tournament for
the first time in 5 years, but still managed a winning record with a new coach. On the winter sports
ledger, Wrestling is proving that their national #2
ranking isn’t overstated, with only two losses in 10
dual meets including a win at defending national
champion Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Men’s
basketball is ranked # 21, and they got a taste of
NWAC competition with a dominating championship performance in the Bigfoot Classic hosted by
the Community Colleges of Spokane. Women’s
basketball has proven they will be a resilient group
this season, as they have several major comeback
games, and only three losses to date. It’s going to
be another fun season and the best is yet to come
for the winter sports!
NIC TO HOST WEST DISTRICT WRESTLING TOURNEY
Make sure you mark your calendar for the Wrestling District tournament at Christianson gymnasium on Friday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. The West
District tournament is the toughest NJCAA qualifying district in the nation, based upon the number
of teams ranked in the national polls.
Participating teams include Northwest College
and Western Wyoming from Region 9, and Clackamas CC, Highline CC, and Southwestern Oregon
CC from Region 18.
The all day tournament determines the wrestlers
that will advance to the NJCAA national tournament in Des Moines, Iowa on February 27-28.
AL WILLIAMS
Rounds 1-2 begin at 10:00, with the semi-finals
at 2:00pm, and the finals at 6:00pm. Save the date
and support your Cardinals!
CDA CROSSING
Special thanks to the board members of the
Coeur d’Alene Crossing 2.4 mile swim for raising funds for three local organizations. The three
recipients; North Idaho College Booster Club,
Union Gospel Mission and the Coeur d’Alene
Swim Team all received donations from the CDA
Crossing board in December. This year the event
attracted almost 200 swimmers and generated over
$30,000 in contributions. The NIC Booster Club
received a check for $6,000 (see picture on Page
3). We extend our sincere appreciation to NIC
Booster Club board members Robert Cliff and
John Marcheso for participating on both boards,
and making the CDA Crossing a highly successful
event in only its third year of existence.
Next year’s event is scheduled for Saturday,
August 16, departing from Arrow Point and ending at the Hagadone Event Center. Check out the
website at www.cdacrossing.com for more details.
There is plenty of time to start training!

NIC Hall of Famer and NJCAA Basketball All-American Greg Wiltjer (far right)
hasn’t been on the NIC campus since 1981.
However, you may recognize the last name
if you are a college basketball fan. Wiltjer’s
son, Kyle, is a star for the Gonzaga Bulldogs
after transferring from the University of Kentucky. The elder Wiltjer currently resides in
the Portland area. In the 1979 picture above,
he is joined by former Cardinal Jim Barstow

Coaches’ Reports
MEN’S BASKETBALL
NIC Men’s Basketball (12-2) is off to
a great start after a slight bump in the road
early in Sheridan Wyoming, and a lost in our
SWAC opener to CSI. After losing a tough
one to Sheridan, we returned strong and won
10 straight before the CSI game. The team
has been working hard on the court as well
as in the class room. With only one week remaining in the semester, and league play in
full swing it is vital that we continue to work
hard in both areas. We have been extremely
happy with the play of our returners. Jamaal
Robateau and Jordon King have been
a huge part of our
success. They have
been great team leaders and have truly put
the team first. Incoming freshman Djuan
Piper and Braian Angola-Rodas have also
been a huge part of
COREY SYMONS
our success. They are
both still learning our
system and how we want to play. We tuned
up for SWAC play by competing in the Bigfoot Classic hosted by Spokane Community
College. We soundly defeated Everett CC
106-84, and Big Bend College 74-66, and after leading by as many as 16, we downed the
host team SCC, 84-80, in the championship
game. Jordon King was selected tournament
MVP, and he was joined by Piper and freshman Kyle Guice on the all –tournament team.
We are excited and ready to get everybody
back and healthy going into our SWAC play.
In our SWAC opener we travelled to Southern
Idaho to take on the 2nd ranked CSI Golden
Eagles led by former NIC Coach Jared Phay.
In the first of hopefully many encounters the
Cardinals lost a hard fought battle 78-64 in
a tough conference eye-opener for our freshman. We will be on the road until late December so please go to nic.edu/athletics and
check us out via web cast. Happy Holidays!
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
It’s hard to believe that the first semester
is almost over and we are already into Scenic West Athletic Conference play! We are
currently 7-3 after losing our conference
opener to the College of Southern Idaho in
Twin Falls, 87-77. We started off the season
with a road trip to Sheridan, Wyoming where
we won 55-54 in a hard fought battle with
NJCAA Western Wyoming Community College. The long trip
caught up with us the
following night as we
fell to NJCAA host
Sheridan College 8171. A week later we
were pleased to host
the North Idaho AllStars consisting of
former NIC players
and local all-stars. It
CHRIS CARLSON
was a great game for
all involved with the
current Lady Cardinals pulling away with a
91-76 win. We then had a weekend off but
took advantage of it with the opportunity to
travel to Big Bend Community College for
a scrimmage. This was extremely advantageous as a chance to work on some things
our previous games had exposed. We then
hosted a couple of solid NWAC teams posting a 83-65 win over Bellevue College and
a 81-74 victory over the defending NWAC
champions from Columbia Basin College.
Thanksgiving weekend saw NJCAA Casper
College from Casper, WY travel to Coeur d’
Alene for back to back games. A slow start in
the first half contributed to our second loss of
the season as we fell to Casper 75-67. However, we busted through the next day strong
from the start and defeated Casper 64-59. In
a rematch with Columbia Basin College on
their court we hit two late free throws in a
comeback victory 80-79. In the last tune-up
before SWAC play, we played our most complete game of the year, soundly defeating previously undefeated Centralia College, 88-61
Sophomore Kara Staggs leads us in scoring with 15.2 points per game. Sophomore
Panisesi Taimani is scoring 12.7 per game
while pulling down 6.1 rebounds per game.
Redshirt freshman Mariah Swanson, who
has recovered from last year’s season ending knee injury, is leading us in rebounding
with 8.8 per game while scoring 10.8 points
per game. Freshman Monica Landdeck is average 10 points per game while sophomore
Katie Kings leads us in assists with 4.0 per

game.

WRESTLING
North Idaho College wrestling, currently
ranked #2 in the country pushed its overall
record to 8-2. In the first home matches of
the season the Cardinals first defeated Cerritos Community College from California.
Cerritos, ranked #1 in California, made the
match a close one with wins in 5 of the 10
weight classes. The difference proved to be
bonus points for NIC at 125, 141, 174, and
184. “We wrestled well for having two of our
starters out of the line up at 133 and heavyweight.
In the second
match the Cardinals
rolled regional foe
Highline
College
from
Washington,
40-9. “I thought the
guys wrestled very
well in our second
match on Saturday,”
The
Cardinals
PAT WHITCOMB
competed in the Spokane Open in the
same weekend. Michael Nguyen (125), and
Bryce Weatherston (141), both placed 2nd
in the tournament. Other placers were: 3rd
place: Tyler McLean (157), Dajour Reece
(165), Cruz Del Angel (184), and 6th place
Jordan Cooks (174). NIC took a Thanksgiving break before traveling to Las Vegas to
wrestle Western Wyoming prior to the Cliff
Keen Invitational. Despite having to forfeit
matches at two weight classes due to travel
problems, the Cardinals soundly defeated
WWC, 31-12.
At the Cliff Keen Invitational, which
consists of all four year colleges excluding
NIC and WWC, several Cardinals had good
tournaments. Derrick Booth and Deondre
Weatherston drew the attention of several
colleges, while Reece, Dennis Wilson (165),
and heavy weight Taylor Korneoly all won
matches. Next up for the Cardinals were
Coaches’ Reports
home matches against #1 Clackamas, national runner-up Northwest College, and regional
foe Southwestern Oregon Community College. The Cardinals defeated Northwest 2813 and SOCC 35-12. However, in the battle
for top spot in the rankings the Cardinals lost
to Clackamas 31-12. Don’t forget to mark
your calendar for the West District tournament, hosted by NIC on Friday, February 13.
Hope to see you at Tri-State on December 1920.Thanks for your support!
GOLF
The Cardinals started off the 2014-2015
men’s and women’s golf season with strong
finishes both on the individual and team
sides. Each of the men’s and women’s teams
competed in four events this fall which included Skagit Valley’s League Match, Spokane
Community
College’s
Bigfoot
Fall Invite, hosting
the North Idaho College Invitational, and
Walla Walla’s Wine
Valley Invitational.
The
women’s
season
highlights
came with two great
RUSSELL GROVE
team finishes both at
Skagit Valley’s and
SCC’s tournaments. At Skagit Valley, the
women’s team had a two day total of 545,
while being led by freshman Mackenzie Phillips’ rounds of 92, 84; resulting in a tie for
second out of ten teams. At SCC’s Bigfoot
Fall Invite the women’s team again tied for
2nd with a tournament score of 523. Both
sophomores Jenna Kaik and Elsa Goodsen
had individual top 10 finishes there as well.
The men’s team struggled during the fall
to put four good individual rounds together
for a team score but had many top performances by individuals. Both sophomores,
Michael Porter and Hugh Taylor, had outstanding individual finishes for the first four
tournaments. Hugh had an unprecedented 3
top 10 finishes in the first four tournaments,
which included a T6 finish at SCC’s Bigfoot
Fall Invite, a T5 finish at NIC’s own invitational, and a T7 finish at Walla Walla’s Wine
Valley Invitational. In those 3 tournaments
Hugh kept a scoring average of 72.66. Mi-
chael Porter got off to a hot start as well with
a 3rd place finish at Skagit Valley’s tournament and winning SCC’s Bigfoot Fall Invite. Michael in those two tournaments kept
his scoring average under par at 70.5. Both
Hugh and Michael are currently looking at
4 year schools to continue their college golf
career’s.
The Cardinals will be practicing individually over the off season as the first official
practice cannot be held until March 1st,
2015. The Cardinals will then host their first
tournament of the spring on April 19th and
20th at Avondale Golf Course. The men’s
team will be adding two more players to the
roster: Adam Power and Hunter Kraft. Adam
is from Spokane, WA. and Hunter is a local
grad from Coeur d’ Alene High School.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball wrapped up the regular season
on a high, winning the last home game of the
season on sophomore night while knocking
off #8 ranked Snow College.
The Cardinals finished in fourth place in
the conference, but proved they could play
with everyone in the
conference. During
the season the Cards
lost in 5 games to
both #8 Salt Lake
CC and #2 CSI, in
matches that could
have easily been Cardinal wins with a better finish.
KELSEY STANLEY
The region tournament was hosted by
the regular season champion CSI. With the
tournament seeds in place, this set up the
third meeting against the 4th seeded NIC and
the 5th seeded USU-Eastern in the quarterfinals, with the winner advancing to the semifinals against top ranked CSI. NIC was well
prepared and controlled the majority of the
match with immense ball control. NIC won
in four games, arranging a match with CSI,
with a trip tournament finals and to the NJCAA 2014 National Tournament at stake.
Unfortunately the offense of CSI could not
be stopped as they hammered their way to a
sweep of NIC, ending their season. With the
lose, NIC’s streak of consecutive trips to the
PAGE 5
national tournament was stopped after four
years.
The Cardinals finished the season with
an 11-11 record and placed five girls on the
All-Region team. Setter Maddi Seidl made
1st team, right side Dzeni Hadzisehovic
and libero Kennedy Chadwick were on the
2nd team, and middle blocker Matilda Altin
joined outside hitter Brittany Aldridge on the
Honorable Mention team. Congratulations
to the team on a successful run. Recruiting
begins immediately to replace several important starters. Stay tuned!
MEN’S SOCCER
Men’s Soccer finished out their most successful season in years at the NWAC Championships. On Saturday, November 15th, NIC
met Edmonds College in a semifinal match.
Despite creating some opportunities in regulation, the score was 0-0 after ninety minutes.
The Cardinals only
needed nine minutes
of overtime though
for the sudden death
gamewinner. After receiving the ball from
the left side of the
field, Alec Johnson
played a forty-five
yard bending, diagoKEN THOMPSON
nal ball behind the
Edmonds left back.
Johnson’s pass met Brady Ulen in stride, and
Ulen took a touch before converting the winning goal with his knee. The Cardinals met
Highline the next day. Highline connected
passes quickly from the start and found the
net in the 15th minute after a corner kick. In
the 30th, they made it 2-0, a score that held
until late in the game. After shifting to a more
attack-minded style of play, the Cardinals
needed to take more and more risks as the
final whistle approached. In the 76th minute,
the high risk style of play resulted in a penalty
kick for Highline. Highline converted, and the
championship went to the Thunderbirds for
the first time in ten years.
Reaching the final was a solid accomplishment for the Cardinals who were back in the
NWAC for the first time in eleven years. In addition to finishing as finalists in the 21-member men’s soccer division, the team received
Coaches’ Reports
recognition regionally and nationally. Before succumbing to Highline in the final, the
NWAC ranked the program number one in the
conference in the final regular season poll. In
the final post-season poll, the National Soccer
Coaches’ Association ranked the program 18th
in the country. The Cardinals led the league in
goals with 56 and was among the best performing defensive teams as well.
Cardinal players received recognition as
well. Behind a 20 goal season, Adam Talley broke the Cardinals’ scoring record, led
the league in goals, and was voted the Baden
NWAC Player of the Year. NWAC coaches
voted Talley, Jake Kraut, Brady Ulen, and
Elias Herman to the All-Star team. Alec
Johnson, Mitch Markovetz, and Braden
Ridgewell all earned All-Region recognition.
Heading into the winter break, the men are
focused on academics and several sophomores are exploring their options to compete
beyond NIC.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Cardinals finished a good, but unusual
year with a loss a Shoreline Community College in the first round
of the NWAC playoffs 1-0. The game
was a back and forth
affair which saw NIC
not finish two 1-on1 chances and SCC
scored on their one
good chance on goal.
The Cardinals finDAN HOGAN
ished the year with a
record of 9-3-9 overall and 8-2-8 in league
play. The 9 ties must set a record someplace
if records are kept on that sort of thing. NIC
gave up only 15 goals in the 21 games starting 4 freshmen at the 5 starting defensive positions for the majority of the season.
Four players on the Cardinals team earned
postseason honors. Natalie Middleton a
sophomore midfielder from Liberty Lake,
Washington was name to the NWAC at AllStar team. Alex Rankin, freshman centerback, Sydney Sol, sophomore outside-back,
and Meghan Pagano, sophomore forward,
were named to the East All-Region team.
SOFTBALL
With the turn in the weather, we are focusing on individual training and finishing
strong in the classroom this semester.
With only one
week left in the semester the players are
preparing for finals
and getting ready to
go home for Christmas break. We will
resume training when
they return for spring
semester.
On the recruiting
front,
sophomore, DON DON WILLIAMS
Maddie
Anthony
signed with Oregon State University last
week.
We are excited to see another NIC player
in the PAC 12. She will play infield for them
starting in the fall of 2015.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Yang earns All-America honors
Former NIC volleyball standout Yang
Yang of the Rocky Mountain College volleyball team earned NAIA All-America honors.
Yang, a 6-foot middle hitter from Yong’an,
China led the Cardinals to the NJCAA national tournament in 2011 and 2012.
Yang was also selected the Frontier Conference and NAIA Northwest Region player
of the year. During the regular season, Yang
led the nation in total blocks and blocks per
set (1.59). Rocky Mountain College (32-3)
was ranked No. 1 in the country for 11 consecutive polls. The Battlin’ Bears won 31
straight matches and finished 5th in the nation at the NAIA tournament.

CHEER
Four months until USA College Nationals!
Three practices a week for the next 3 months,
with double days in March, but making room
for Christmas vacation, basketball, and wrestling NIC Cheerleaders have roughly 100
hours left to practice before the big competition. Plenty of time actually!
All year thus far they have been working on developing their skills (stunts, tumbling, baskets, pyramids). They are now in
phase two, which is
applying their skills
to their nationals
routine. The team
learned a majority of
their choreography
mid November. Now
the focus is performing smoothly, and
piecing the routine
together, preparing to
LESLIE PULLEY
do it full out.
The team will be
performing a few times before California.
Their first routine performance will be February 14 at the Prairie Classic Cheer Competition. They will also perform at Idaho 4A/5A
Cheerleading Regionals.
In addition to performing at competitions, the team will perform a couple of half
time routines (different skills due to surface
restrictions) at the NIC games starting in
January. So I invite you to stop by and join
the cheerleaders in cheering on Cardinal
basketball and catch some half time excitement as well!
