a CYCLE TO… event this year. We hope
that is going to be even bigger and better,
especially as we are celebrating our 275th
Anniversary this year!
Coram is the UK’s first-ever children’s
charity, and since 1739 we’ve been
transforming children’s lives, to give them
better chances and a brighter, happier
future. Last year Coram supported one
million children, young people and families,
creating a change that lasts a lifetime.
GOOD
LUCK!
CYCLE TO…
A REGISTERED CHARITY
CYCLE TO… will be supporting Coram’s
vital programmes, with a specific focus
on Coram’s unrivalled and pioneering
Adoption service.
CORAM ADOPTION
The UK’s most successful charity
adoption service, Coram helps children
find a
safe, loving and permanent new
home, and a family who can offer them
all the support they need to improve their
lives. Coram provides ongoing care to
their new families, to ensure they have
all the help they need to stay together,
and thrive. Visit www.coram.org.uk/howwe-do-it/adoption to watch a video about
a couple that adopted through Coram and
hear about the special experiences this
can bring.

JAMES’ STORY
James is the third child to be removed from
his birth mother’s care. Due to concerns
he was suffering significant harm at home,
he was taken to live with a foster family.
James’s mother had severe mental health
problems and has been very ill for most of
her life.
James made good developmental
progress with his foster family but it was
very difficult to identify a family for him
due to him being genetically vulnerable to
developing mental illness.
Coram helps children in many different
ways – right across the UK. We help
children to feel safe and loved through
our adoption service; we help 850,000
primary school children lead healthier
lives through Coram Life Education; we
support young people’s education and
learning through our youth services for
16-25 year olds; we protect children’s
legal rights when these are in danger of
being ignored; and our creative therapy
service uses art and music techniques
to help children to overcome trauma, as
well as strengthening families to help
children thrive.
He was finally placed for adoption when
he was three years old. When he joined
his new Coram forever family, James’
development was slightly delayed. He also
had to manage the transition to his new
family after more than three years with
his foster carers (who would not keep him
because of the risks of mental illness).
In 2014, CYCLE TO… helped Coram to
find and prepare new adoptive parents
for 50 children living in care, allowing
them to have a chance of a brighter future.
Coram helps to provide the safe, loving
and permanent homes that these children
desperately need.
James has made wonderful progress in
his new family. His speech has improved
enormously and he has become more
confident and outgoing – he has really
thrived in his new environment. He loves
books and playing with his toy trains and
cars.
In addition, 30 adopted children and
their families will receive a lifetime of
post adoptive support from Coram, so
that
we can be there for them whenever
they need our help. At Coram, we don’t
just bring families together, we help them
stay together.
Thank you from all at Coram for your
continued support in transforming the
lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children.

MAXIMISING YOUR
SPONSORSHIP
ARTICLE 25
Article 25 is a UK registered charity named
after the 25th Article of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, stating
that adequate shelter and housing are
fundamental human rights.
We design and construct buildings in
international development, providing
schools, homes and health facilities
wherever there is disaster, poverty or need.
We offer essential technical skills to aid
agencies, communities and governments
of the developing world to execute building
projects on the ground. As a small charity
the funding from CYCLE TO… is vital in
supporting our crucial work.
In 2014 the support from CYCLE TO…
helped us improve sanitation in cholera
affected areas of Haiti, launch a school
building programme in Burkina Faso – one
of the world’s least educated communities
– and complete a vocational training
centre in Uganda for former child-soldiers.
The support will help our continuing
programme of repair and reconstruction
of educational facilities in Haiti which
will improve and save the lives of large
numbers of children.

MULTIPLE SYSTEM ATROPHY
Multiple System Atrophy is a life limiting
neurological brain disease which can
affect any adult. Currently one person a
day is diagnosed with MSA. The Multiple
System Atrophy Trust is the only British
charity to offer support for those affected
by this devastating disease as well as
funding research into its causes. From the
moment of diagnosis the Trust provides
MSA specialist nurses, telephone support,
an online forum for people affected by
MSA and information for health care
professionals.
towards the expansion of our national
Support Group Network, reaching those
affected by this terrible disease. The
Trust remains extremely grateful for the
on-going support of CYCLE TO… and their
riders.

TOM’S TRUST
Each year Tom’s Trust supports
many different projects which help
disadvantaged young people in London.
The Trust aims to help give them
opportunities which they would not
otherwise have. We support charities who
offer a real benefit to young people.
In 2014, the money raised by CYCLE TO...
helped fund three of these projects:
the Bethwin Football Club in Peckham,
Switchback in East London, and the OK
Club in Kilburn.
Tom’s Trust will continue to support
up to 15 different projects. One of the
new projects the Trust is helping to
fund is called ’Centre of the Cell’ which
encourages young people to explore
the world of Science and gives them the
opportunity to find out more about how to
take up a science-related career. This is
the first centre in the World to have such
a facility placed over a working research
centre.
THE EMTHONJENI TRUST
Emthonjeni Trust supports people living
with HIV/ AIDS in Grahamstown, South
Africa in their fight against infection
in a community of 120,000 with 80%
unemployment. With generous support
from CYCLE TO... the lives of 48 HIV
affected children are transformed by
enabling them to attend every day the
Raphael Pre School. It is a fun and safe
place for the forty eight children whose
lives are far from easy. They live in HIVaffected homes and entrenched poverty,
due to the highest unemployment rate in
the region impacting on the community’s
youngest. These children are, however,
luckier than most of their friends because
they attend a nursery school where there
is always a listening ear, a helping hand
and a welcoming smile.
Thanks to the generosity of CYCLE TO…
all the needs of these children are met,
including school fees, nutritional meals
and staff salaries.
The Raphael Centre’s major new thrust for
this school is to offer intensive up-grade
training for teaching staff plus visits by
Raphael Centre counsellors to the homes
of the children’s parents and caregivers
offering extra support, HIV prevention
education and general health advice.

SPREAD THE WORD
Tell as many people as possible what you
are doing – an obvious one, but the more
you ask, the more you’ll get!
Email family, friends, colleagues, business
contacts, etc.
GET ONLINE
Set up an online giving page – (Virgin
Money Giving) as soon as possible. This
makes donating easy, allowing you to
keep track of individual supporters and
encouraging people to talk about the ride.
The charities benefit as it is a commission
free fundraising service. See page 6 for
further information.
MAKE IT PERSONAL
When sourcing support it is great to tell
people why you personally are doing
the ride, how the charities benefit (we
can provide you with further information
on this) and even how your company
and clients/suppliers may also benefit.
Personalise your Virgin Money Giving page
as much as possible – people are more
willing to give if they can see that you are
passionate and if they can understand why
this is important to you.
GIFT AID
Make sure you tell people to Gift Aid their
donations, and give them the option if you
are using paper sponsorship. For Gift Aid,
we need the person’s home address and
postcode, and a box ticked that they agree
to Gift Aid their donation (see page 10).
SPEAK TO YOUR EMPLOYER
Some companies have a Matched Giving
Programme. Even if they don’t offer this
they may be able to support you in other
ways, such as allowing you to organise
fundraising activities at work or simply
promoting your participation in your
CYCLE TO... event and your fundraising
activities.
SECURE IT!
If somebody says that they will sponsor
you, make sure they do! Sending out
email updates about how your training is
progressing can work as a gentle reminder
for those who haven’t yet sponsored you.
We have also recently helped fund
“Bounce Back”, a Charity that helps young
ex-Offenders to train for a new career in
Painting & Decorating so that they can gain
useful employment.
The money raised by CYCLE TO... for Tom’s
Trust makes a huge difference in our ability
to fund all these projects.

FUNDRAISING
IDEAS
EVENTS AND CHALLENGES
There are plenty of ways to meet your sponsorship target aside from asking for direct
donations. Here are just some fundraising ideas to do with friends, family, staff and your
local community.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN REACH YOUR
SPONSORSHIP TARGET; FROM SECURING AN ALLOY
SPONSORSHIP TO HOSTING A QUIZ NIGHT WITH YOUR FRIENDS.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO GET THE FUNDS ROLLING IN!
SECURE AN ALLOY SPONSOR
Please see event specific sponsorship
details for your own event. This one is for
CYCLE TO MIPIM.
Your company or corporate clients/
suppliers could become an Alloy Sponsor
for £2000 + VAT. This means you will
then only need to raise a further £1000 to
reach your fundraising target. The Alloy
sponsorship package has some fantastic
benefits for companies to raise their
profile.
ALLOY SPONSOR BENEFITS:
— Logo on the side of the CYCLE TO...
main vehicle which accompanies the
riders
— Small logo on all CYCLE TO...
advertising until the end of your event
month in Estates Gazette
— Listed as a supporter in press releases
— Logo on destination conference stand
(if applicable)
— Logo on the CYCLE TO... website
Alloy sponsorship offers one of the most
cost effective ways of maximising visibility
of your logo at your conference event.
“As an Alloy sponsor, we benefited from a
huge variety and quantity of exposure…
through extensive industry press coverage
in the build up to, during and after MIPIM”
If you are interested in taking an Alloy
sponsorship or would like to discuss any
corporate involvement, please do get in
contact to ensure the maximum exposure
is achieved by acting as early as possible.

SECURE COMPANY DONATIONS
A simple way to raise your sponsorship
is to secure company support. Here
the company also benefits as they have
the opportunity to fulfill their CSR /
Community Investment objectives, whilst
strengthening your relationship with them.
Your company may have a fund for making
charitable donations, which you could
approach for support.
A Matched Giving Programme may be in
place at work – Matched Giving is a joint
donation by staff and company; employees
make an individual donation, either a
percentage of their salary or a variable
amount, and the company matches it.
If companies donate a certain amount to
you (you decide on the amount) you could
thank them for the support they have
shown by including their logo on a cycling
jersey you wear in training or on the ride.
We can suggest a supplier to produce your
jersey. Please note that we will expect you
to wear the CYCLE TO… jersey on certain
days of the ride.
To help secure company support we can
give talks to your company staff about the
charities supported.
You can use the information both in this
pack and on the website about CYCLE TO...
and the charities in your approaches to
companies for sponsorship. If you require
further information please contact us.

INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS
Raising money from individuals is much
easier to administer these days than it
used to be.
ONLINE DONATIONS
We are registered with the online
fundraising partner, Virgin Money Giving,
which enables your supporters to donate
money online using their debit or credit
card. We encourage all participants to
create their own fundraising page. To
do this, visit our charity page (either
by searching for CYCLE TO on www.
virginmoneygiving.com, or by clicking
through from our website) and click on
‘Start Fundraising’. You’ll then need to
create an account, after which you can
very easily create a fundraising page with
a picture of yourself and some text for
your supporters to read about your epic
adventure. Please do not raise money that
pays direct to another charity.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT
PAYMENTS
Bank cheques & charity cheques – As
a registered charity we can accept CAF
(charity) cheques as well as regular bank
cheques and cash. Please make sure any
payments are made out to ‘CYCLE TO...’.
Important – It is vital that all money is paid
direct to ‘CYCLE TO...’ and not direct to the
benefiting charities. We pay grants to the
chosen charities once the ride is over and
it ensures we can keep track of the total
amount raised by CYCLE TO....

TOP TIPS
SPEAK TO PEOPLE
Local businesses may be able to donate prizes for a raffle or your employer may agree to
fundraising events at work.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN
If you are organising an event there will be lots of details you need to think about to
ensure it runs smoothly. It is always best to start earlier than you might think necessary.
…
FUNDRAISING
EVENTS
BREAK DOWN THE NUMBERS
Think about how much you would hope to raise from one event, and how many people
you would need to do it.
WHO ARE YOU APPROACHING?
Think about the different groups of people that you could get involved. This could be
family, friends, work colleagues, your local pub, sports club members, etc.
KEEP THINGS SIMPLE
You don’t want to tire yourself out before the ride has even started! Plus there is less risk
involved in events that don’t cost much to organise.

SPREADING
THE WORD
USEFUL
SPONSORSHIP
COPY
IT IS IMPORTANT TO PUBLICISE YOUR PARTICIPATION IN
THE RIDE AND YOUR FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES AS MUCH AS
POSSIBLE. THERE ARE MANY WAYS YOU CAN DO THIS, BIG AND
SMALL. HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS:
USEFUL COPY TO INCLUDE WHEN MAKING SPONSORSHIP APPROACHES –
please adapt to suit your own event – this one is for CYCLE TO MIPIM.
AT WORK
Adding a link to your Virgin Money Giving
page at the end of your personal and work
email signatures spreads the word with
minimal effort. It is also a subtle way of
asking people you may not have otherwise
approached.
You can publicise your efforts through a
staff intranet, or by putting up a poster in
the staff kitchen/office.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media can be an extremely
valuable tool in driving up your
sponsorship. It is a quick and easy way to
reach hundreds of people. Provide regular
updates on your progress, particularly as
the ride draws closer, to remind those who
haven’t yet sponsored you. Make sure you
include a link to your Virgin Money Giving
page, so that people can get there with
one easy click!
A press release will help you to raise
awareness about CYCLE TO… and the
designated charities as well as help you
to get extra fundraising support from
readers and local businesses. A template
is available on our website, and all you
will need to do is add in the relevant
information about your own activities, and
contact local journalists in your area.
Once you have added your information
to create your press release, the first
step is to get in touch with your local
newspaper and/or radio station to find out
which journalist would be best to contact
regarding covering your story. Once you
have obtained their contact details, email
them with your press release, preferably
including a photo, and then follow up with
a phone call there and then. It’s a good
idea to email the press release and phone
them at the same time, as you’ll have
their attention and can discuss the story
immediately.
All you need to do is run through a few
facts from your press release, introducing
them to the information. Journalists all
work slightly differently, and will be open to
talking to you about the options if they are
interested in your story.
I have recently signed up to the CYCLE TO MIPIM, a 1500km cycling challenge, open to
people connected with the UK Property Sector. It starts on the 5th March in London and
ends in Cannes on 10th March at MIPIM.
If you would like to contact your local
media before the template press release
is available on our website, please get in
touch with us so that we can give you some
advice.
The money raised will support a number of charities and projects. The main beneficiary
is Coram, the UK’s first children’s charity. Founded in 1739, Coram works with some of
the most vulnerable children in our communities. Its range of services includes Coram
Adoption, that works to find children a safe, loving and permanent new home, and a family
that can offer them all the support they need to improve their lives. Children like James,
who was removed from his birth mother’s care due to concerns that he was suffering
significant harm at home. James’ mother had severe mental health problems, and it was
very difficult to identify a family for him as he was genetically vulnerable to developing
mental illness. However, Coram found a loving forever family for James, and he has made
wonderful progress. His speech has improved enormously and he has become more
confident and outgoing, making great progress in his new environment. The support
doesn’t end there: Coram provides a lifetime of support to all its families, to ensure that
they have all the help that they need to stay together and thrive.
We are also able to give you advice about
personalising your press release.
This is a challenge on two levels: it is a physical endurance challenge but also a
fundraising challenge, as each rider is asked to raise a minimum of £3000.
I am writing to ask for your support in this challenge and to help reach my fundraising
target of £3000.
It can also be helpful to share ‘links’ to the
charities’ websites, so that people learn
more about what they do.
Follow us and the charities on Facebook
or Twitter e.g. @CYCLE_TO_EVENTS and
@Coram. This will keep you up to date
on the latest news as well as letting your
followers know what you are up to.
LOCAL COMMUNITY – PRESS RELEASES
Local newspapers and radio stations are
often interested in community fundraising
stories. Maybe you are planning a really
interesting fundraising event or you are
cycling the ride for the 1st/5th time. Maybe
there is a story you want to share about
why you chose to ride CYCLE TO... or why
Coram or the other charity beneficiaries
are important to you.
