General Manager PATRICK O’KEEFE It has been a very good year at the club with member and guest service, product levels, revenue to budget and membership all increasing. As we end another successful year, we enter 2015 in good order. We are always striving for improvement in operations each and every day and our business plan reflects sustaining and enhancing the member, guest and staff experience. With that in mind, the Board of Directors approved capital items to enhance that experience in all of our key result areas. For example, Golf, Greens and Grounds: A new truck, staff work vehicles and new computers, along with contingency funds for a deep well and various machines, such as a fairway mower if needed. Pool: Re-fiberglassing the pool and upgrading the pool structure to include a snack bar with a full bar. Fitness: A new rowing machine and various new weights and mats. Tennis: Shop refurbishment, shade for the tennis courts and horticulture and fencing upgrades. Administration: Will be receiving a new copier and new computers. Clubhouse: New fan hood in the kitchen, bistro bar pass, refurbishment of the exterior of the clubhouse and an upgrade on the HVAC equipment. Food and Beverage: Due to an approximate 70% revenue increase in 2014 functions from 2013, the operation will be receiving a new Alto Sham Food Warmer to increase banquet holding capacity and due to the popularity of the hospitality tent, the operation will be receiving cathedral type side walls and we will be connecting electric power to the tent for functions. So, you will be seeing and enjoying new programs, offerings and amenities throughout 2015 with much more to come in the future. Thank you for your assistance in retaining and attaining new members this year, which is the main reason for these future upgrades and the more members, the better the opportunity to enhance the facility. Happy Holidays! NEWS FROM THE BOARD • NEWS FROM THE BOARD Don Kingston, President DWCC Board of Directors November Fall Retreat – The Board Fall Retreat was held on November 7th. Twelve members of the Board were present. The DWCC GM and DW Controller were also in attendance. The focus of the Retreat was to address the 2015 Business/Operating Budget Plan, Dues, 2015 Capital Plan/Reserves, Membership and the Long Range Plan. • The GM presented the 2015 Business/Operating Budget Plan which will once again represent a challenge consistent with the state of the economy. The Plan projects revenues growing by 3.6% based upon a realistic membership number and expenses growing at 2.1% reflective of the increased cost of doing business. This challenge will be addressed through a continued focus on increased membership, expense management and partially offset through a modest dues increase in the spring. • The Board discussed the 2015 Capital Plan realizing that we are challenged by the maintenance of our Clubhouse (now 10 years old) and the other aged DWCC facilities (including the golf course, tennis courts and pool) and the objective to enhance our facilities for our membership. The Board had preliminarily set aside $150,000, funding the A and B priorities and allowing for a contingency fund to address other urgent needs or emergencies. At the same time, the Board will continue to set aside funds to continue to grow our capital reserves. NEWS FROM THE BOARD (CONTINUED) • Membership was discussed including the renaming of the categories and the addition of new single memberships. Action was taken in the Board meeting that followed. • The Long Range Plan status was updated, with the key focus on Sustainability Phase (one year) and the Development Phase (two to five years). The Growth Phase (six to ten years) will be initiated soon. The Board challenge will be to balance the Capital Plan with the requirements of the LRP. The Board will approve the 2015 Business/Operating Plan, 2015 Dues and the 2015 Capital Plan at the December Board Meeting. There was consensus that the Retreat provided a good impetus for a bright future for the Club. November Meeting - The Board Meeting was held on November 7th, following the Retreat. Twelve members of the Board were present for the Meeting. The DWCC General Manager and DW Controller were also in attendance. General Manager Comments - The GM reported that we budgeted for 15 weddings in 2014 and to date have had 19 weddings at the Club. President’s Comments – Due to a conflict of schedules, the January 2015 Board meeting will be held on the 28th, not on the normal third Wednesday of the month (21st). The President announced that Roger Crafe has been appointed Chairman of this year’s Nominating Committee. There will be four Directors positions elected next spring. Operations - The Treasurer and DWCC Controller reported the results for October were not yet available for Board review; however there were no capital expenditures in October. Membership did grow by 2 and now stands at 482. Key Committee Activity – Most Committees had not met before the Retreat, so there were few reports. The Board, by majority vote, did request the Greens and Grounds Committee to work with the Town of Kitty Hawk to remove the tall pampas grass on Route 158 and replace it with lower plantings. The House Committee did announce that the Club will be switching our telephone service to Century Link due to service issues. Both the Social and Communications are busy with new activities for the coming year. The Board by majority vote supported the following brought forth by the Membership Committee: elimination of the generational test membership, a change in title on member classifications and establishment of a single tennis and single social membership categories. Thank You - For the past fourteen years, DWCC has been a proud host of the Outer Banks Charity Classic. This year were pleased to learn that the event has been recognized well beyond our local community. The Charity Classic has just been selected to receive the prestigious USTA North Carolina Award as Charity Tennis Event of the Year. This annual event has grown over time through the vision and leadership of one of our own members, Jim Groff. Jim founded the Outer Banks Charity Classic to benefit Dare County Home, Health and Hospice to acknowledge their help in getting him through a difficult time. He designed and grew the event over his twelve years of leadership, attracting his merry band of volunteers along the way. And, in addition to creating a fun, competitive event, over $200,000 was contributed to the Hospice over that period. Jim stepped aside from active leadership two years ago but the Charity Classic itself remains rooted in the purpose he determined in the beginning; A strong Hospice for support in a time of need. Thank you, Jim! Summary Comments - If you are interested in additional Board or Standing Committee information or have a question, the Board Members and Chairs/Vice Chairs are all listed on the DWCC Home Page. The next Board meeting is scheduled for December 17th and has been changed to start at 6:00 pm. 2 Tennis Fred Pfuhl VARY YOUR GAME FOR RESULTS How much variance do you have in your game? There are 4 ways a player can add variance to his or her game. A player can: • (1) change the power of shots • (2) change of the height of shots • (3) change the spin of shots • (4) change the depth of shots. By using these variations on your shots, you can better control your opponent and not let them achieve a rhythm. I am always telling my students to discover as soon as possible in the match their opponents comfort zone. Comfort zone meaning where is their strike zone preference when they hit the ball, and where is their comfort zone on the court. By changing depths, spin, pace, and height you can change where your opponent makes contact with the ball and change your opponent’s position on the court. A great player figures out how to make their opponent run more in the course of the match than they run. Use the four ways to vary your shots to accomplish this purpose. Keeping your feet together, practice hitting balls teed up. Your feet should be touching or within 2 or 3 inches of each other. Swing slowly at first. Concentrate on making solid contact with the ball. Always think tempo and rhythm. Once you can hit consistently good shots, work on hitting the ball off the grass. You may be surprised how far you can actually hit the ball like this. I also want to thank Brian, Gina, Jeff, Larry and the entire Pro Shop staff for all their help throughout the year. If you have any questions concerning this drill or anything else having We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful group of people in our Pro to do with your golf game, please don’t hesitate to contact Brian or Shop helping us. We will be starting our “Snow Bird” play, Tuesday, Gina in the golf shop for a golf lesson. Good Golfing! Nov. 18th. If anyone is unsure as to how to play in “Snow Birds” just call the pro shop and they will explain how it works. It is fun, no pressure, easy going golf, so come on out. The 18 holers will tee off at 9:30 with the 9 holers right behind. Also, we will have our Jingle Bells Luncheon and Gift Exchange on Tuesday December 9th at 11:30. A sign up sheet has been posted in the Ladies Locker room so please sign up for this fun event. I will see you all on December 9th and as always, see you on the red tees. Not only does the Feet Together Drill promote balance and rhythm but it improves your timing, and reduces swaying because of the narrow balance point. If you sway or swing too hard, you may fall over. This drill will also keep bad faults from creeping into your swing. 4 Flight 1 st Fitness Information Tennis Social Events Fitness Center Hours: Monday-Sunday: 5:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. For more information regarding equipment use or for personal training, please call Debbie Zeigler at (252) 305-5969. ****************************** Improve Strength, Balance, Stamina with one on one or group personal training.
