PROGRAM NOTES
Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
Getting to Class
Students are expected to transfer independently to an
Enrichment class. Teachers are given a class list at
the beginning of each session, but they are not
responsible for delivering students to their enrichment
classes. If you think this may be a challenge for your
child, please contact the coordinator and we will try to
arrange a “student buddy” to assist your child.
By enrolling your child in an Enrichment class, you
are responsible for the following:
§
§
Knowing the dates that classes occur, including
start and end dates (see individual class
listings).
Knowing the drop off and pick up times for
classes and, most importantly, ensuring your
child is picked up on time (see “Drop Off and
Pick Up” at right)
Drop Off and Pick Up
•
Parents are responsible for collecting their
children promptly from afternoon classes.
•
There will be no supervision for children after
their class ends.
•
If prompt pick up becomes an issue, your
student may be removed from the class without
refund for remaining classes.
•
Please make arrangements for pickup prior to
enrolling your child in an after-school class.
•
No bus transportation can be offered for
Enrichment Program classes occurring before
and after school.
Tutoring
If your student is participating in tutoring, remember
that tutoring comes first.
Enrollment
•
Classes are filled on a first come, first served
basis.
•
Please bring your registration and payment to
the Thurgood Marshall office. Some classes
may require online or direct payment and
registration.
•
You will receive confirmation—letter or email—
that your child is enrolled in a class. Please
do not send your child to class without
written confirmation of his/her enrollment.
•
If a class does not enroll sufficiently, it may be
cancelled. You will be notified and your fees
refunded.
Behavior
At Thurgood Marshall, we have the expectation of
respect for teachers/instructors and good behavior
during classes.
Students are expected to maintain the same
behavioral standards that they have during the formal
school day. If an instructor identifies a behavior issue,
the following steps will be taken:
•
At the first incident, the instructor will call
parents/ guardians regarding student behavior.
•
The student will be given one trial class to improve.
•
If the disruptive behavior continues, we reserve
the right to remove the student from the class
without refund for remaining classes. Please
discuss enrollment with your child to be sure
they want to attend an after-school class.
Please note, for classes that fill up, we will form a wait
list of students that don’t get in. The students on the
wait list will have priority enrollment if they sign up for
the same class the following quarter. In addition,
classes that have running wait lists will prioritize
students who have not participated in the class before
returning students can re-enroll.
Calendar
Classes start the week of January 19 and run through
March 20, 2015. Most classes include eight sessions.
(For exceptions, see individual class listings.) Please
note some classes may start earlier or may run longer
due to breaks and early dismissal days.
•
No morning or afternoon classes are held on
the following days:
Mon, Jan 19, Martin Luther King Day
Fri, Jan 30, day between semesters
Mon, Feb 16 & Tue, Feb 17, mid-winter break
Snack and Clothing
•
Each child should bring a small, easy to eat
snack on class days.
•
Please send your children with clothing
appropriate for their classes. Athletics and
dance classes require loose-fitting clothes and
closed-toe rubber-soled shoes. Art can be
messy! Please bring an old shirt or a smock.
Financial Aid
Our intent is that all students have the ability to
participate in our Enrichment Program. Students who
are eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch
program may enroll in an Enrichment class for
10% of the class fee. We are limited to only one
class request per qualifying student per quarter.
The ability to grant aid is based on the amount of
money voluntarily donated to the program and by the
generosity of our vendors and instructors who offer
scholarship positions in their classes. We reserve the
right to grant or deny all requests for financial aid.
Class Fee
Class fees are set by our vendors and this program
does not generate any profits.
Class registrations managed by the Thurgood
Marshall Enrichment Program include a
nonrefundable $15 fee for administrative and financial
aid costs. This fee helps ensure instructors are
present, parents are notified in case of class changes,
and that all students are picked up. It also helps offset
financial aid costs (see section at right).

PMSC1
Creative Computing with Scratch (Basic)
Grades 4-5
Wednesdays
3:50p-4:50p
$165
Would you like to design your own computer game? How about a computer
program that makes a cat dance or explore a maze or sing your favorite song? If
yes, then join us in Creative Computing with Scratch! We will introduce you to
the exciting world of computer science. You will learn fundamental programming
concepts such as variables, loops, conditional statements, and event handling. You
will learn to create animations, make and import objects, create audio recordings,
and use them to develop interactive programs.
You will learn this and more using Scratch, an interactive programming language
developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As you teach a
mischievous cat to dance, explore a maze, or build games, you will learn how to
think creatively with math and computer code. In the course you will be able to use
your newly acquired skills to design and develop your own game ideas and share it
with your classmates, friends, and family.
No previous programming skills are required, but students should be comfortable
using a computer, a web browser, and managing files. Students do not need to
purchase any software or textbook.
Instructors: Ritu Bahl and Nina Smith-Gardiner. Ritu Bahl has over 20 years of
experience in the Information Technology industry. She has worked in various
technical leadership positions in Harris Semiconductors, Hewett Packard, Microsoft,
and Amazon. She holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical and Computer
Engineering and a MBA from the University of Washington. Nina Smith-Gardiner is
an architect with over 20 years experience in the field. She has a BA from Princeton
University, a Master in Fine Arts from Hunter College (CUNY), and a Masters in
Architecture from SCI-Arc, the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Ritu and
Nina share a passion for inspiring young people to get hooked on computer science
by showing them how computers can be fun, can open doors to some amazing
careers, and most importantly, can be used to solve big societal problems.

tackle new and challenging animations such as making your characters run, jump,
and fall as they would in real life under the influence of gravity! You will also learn
how to make scrolling platform games so your characters can run forever just like in
Mario and you will see how these models go from a simple set of mathematical
equations to a dynamic, fully developed video game!
