the future of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake. Volume No. 71 No. 1 JANUARY, 2015 Donna Schlegel, Commodore Happy New Year! I am truly honored to serve as your Commodore for the coming year and privileged to receive the distinction of the first "Lady Commodore" in the 70 year history of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake! Our Commodores offer strong leadership and a willingness to invest considerable time and hard work. The Sailing Club enjoyed a particularly impressive year in 2014 under the direction of Past Commodore Jackins. Adding to his talented leadership, the successful year was made possible by dedicated Flag Officers, Members at Large, Committee and Event Chairs, and the dozens of members required to serve on the fifteen committees and numerous appointments. As an extra bonus, the club benefited from Diane's unwavering and enthusiastic support throughout the year. Congratulations to all for a job well done! It's full steam ahead in 2015! Our Committee and Event Chairs are offering a robust schedule of high quality cruises, racing, and land events. We begin with the ever popular ANNUAL TROPHY DINNER DANCE in January at the Engineer’s Club in Baltimore. Jim Taneyhill and his committee are near pros in producing what will be a sensational event — don't miss it, make your reservation now! Next in store is our WINTER PROGRAM on February 28th at the Annapolis Yacht Club. Matt Rutherford, solo circumnavigator of the Americas, will entertain us with an account of his latest expedition across the Pacific Ocean from Northern California to Japan. He has stories you will never forget — so don't forget the date! The 2015 Schedule of Events is posted in this edition of the Rendezvous. Cruise itineraries are nearly complete and will be published next month. In an effort to accommodate families with school age children, we have scheduled the June Rendezvous Cruise one week later than usual. The LKIBK Party and Mid Summer Cruise is a week later following the July 4th weekend. The dates for the Annual Summer Cruise in August are arranged to avoid conflict with the Governor's Cup Race that a few of our members will compete in. We want to involve all ages in as many events as possible; making a few scheduling adjustments is a step in the right direction. The sailing season will be filled with short cruises, long cruises, club races, bay races, and parties at impressive waterfront sites. We're in store for a terrific sailing season! Tony van Hover does a remarkable job in putting the Roster together. Please find the Dues and Roster Form on the following pages. One last request: please volunteer to help with an event! It can be great fun and an easy way to meet members. With your help we're bound for another excellent year. Cheers! During the depression the family gave dance instruction in their home on Friday evenings to make ends meet. It was during one of these evenings he met his future wife Charlotte Conaway. They married in 1949. He, along with his three brothers and one sister served during WW II and all returned home safely. After the War he completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland. Following graduation he joined the C M Kemp Mfg Co. eventually serving as Vice President of International Sales and Marketing. After 40 years with C M Kemp he retired and started his own consulting firm, traveling the world setting up manufacturing representative firms for US companies abroad and creating friendships around the world. He retired again and became a volunteer teacher in industrial arts for more than a decade at Catonsville Middle School. He received a Governors Citation and a Meritorious Service Award from the Teachers Association of Baltimore County for his work. While volunteer teaching he also developed his wood turning skills, producing thousands of bowls which were sold in various specialty shops throughout Maryland. His bowls received 1st place ribbons annually at the MD State Fair and he was one of the few wood turners given wood from the famed Wye Oak. An avid sailor, the family spent summers on the Magothy River at the Grachur Club where he was a past president. He was also a past Commodore of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake and past member of the Annapolis Yacht Club. He was affectionately known as "Pop" Frey by many. In particular the SCC kids for running dingy races around the anchored fleet while their parents enjoyed the early evening. This was followed at the end of the annual cruise week with a hand turned ice cream party for all aboard the family Cal 29 "Freyja". He was preceded in death by his brothers Edward, Donald and David; his sister Rita Berry and his beloved wife Charlotte n'ee Conaway. He is survived by sons Bobby, John and wife Loraine, and daughter Karen and husband John Mcgillen, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and his friend, Shirley Hall. Pop Frey touched the lives of many, and will be dearly missed by family and friends. The family will greet friends at Catonsville United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM on January 3, 2015 followed by a memorial service at 11:00. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Grachur Club CIP or Catonsville United Methodist Church. Editors Note– Mr. Frey continued to attend Sailing Committee Meetings and Events until his death. 5 MID-WINTER RENDEZVOUS WITH MATT RUTHERFORD FEBRUARY 28, 2015 Many members of the Sailing Club monitored in awe and envy the epic solo voyage of Matt Rutherford in his circumnavigation of the Americas. He was 309 days alone without setting foot on land in a boat that many would have considered risky for a few days on the Chesapeake. But that was just for “openers”! Since that notorious voyage, under the auspices of Ocean Research Project which he founded, Matt and his partner, Nicole Trenholm, have sailed thousands of miles in the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. Their voyages have included the collection of “tons” of samples and vital scientific information on the degradation and accumulation of waste in the oceans, and an attempted salvage of a sailboat in the Sargasso Sea. You can find a great deal of further information about Matt’s work and adventures on the internet—but better yet, come to the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake’s Mid-Winter Rendezvous and talk with Matt and Nicole yourself. Fredrik Salvesen Monty Schumpert 16 Respectfully, John W. Doxey , Secretary/Elect WELCOME… NEW MEMBER STEVE BLAKELY Steve and Julia Blakely’s first date was on his 23-ft. Paceship, named “Deadline.” Luckily, she liked both the boat and the skipper, and they are still sailing together almost 30 years later, currently out of Galesville on an Island Packet 26. They renamed the pocket cruiser Bearboat when they bought it 15 years ago, after both a favorite California wine and its solid performance in heavy weather. Rechristening involved a bottle of Bareboat Chardonnay, evenly shared: One glass for the bow, the rest for the crew! Since then, Bearboat has taken them as far north as New Jersey and as far south as North Carolina, but most of their limited sailing time is spent in the mid-bay. The centerboard sloop draws only 2’-10” and is excellent for gunkholing where bigger boats can’t go (such as the feeder ditch up to Lake Drummond in the Dismal Swamp Canal). They have also chartered in the US/BVIs and Bahamas. Steve learned to sail on a home-built 12-ft. Sailfish at the family’s summer cottage in Michigan, has been exploring the Chesapeake for more than three decades, and has crewed extensively along the East Coast (longest offshore passages: Florida to the Chesapeake, Abacos to Key West, Bermuda to New York). He also crewed in the 2012 Chicago-Mackinac Race on a 36-ft. sloop that placed third in the cruising division. They live in Arlington, VA. Julia is a rare book librarian for the Smithsonian and private collectors, and also runs marathons. Steve is the editor for a Washington research institute focusing on health and retirement coverage. He previously covered the federal government as a news reporter and worked on Capitol Hill. He volunteers on the reconstruction of Thomas Point Lighthouse and is a member of the Washington Canoe Club. Steve also does some boating and travel freelance writing in his spare time (most recently on the C&D Canal), and posts his clips and videos at https://bearboat.wordpress.com/ 17 The Race Committee can always use a few more good men and women. The R/C, in a way, is a club within the club. Usually members continue to serve year after year because they feel it is important to them and their club to put on and be recognized for hosting the best racing events around. They like the camaraderie of being part of the team and also enjoy the post event parties where the race participants often express their appreciation. For some It is a way to stay engaged with the competitive scene after they stop their active racing campaigns. For others it is a way to join in on the competitive racing scene for the first time or pursue a track in race administration for US Sailing. There are some clubs where being “tapped” for the R/C is a really big, prestigious and exclusive deal. For the SCC, all our members are sailors, volunteers, and we are not exclusive when it comes to service and fun. It is also the highest paid job in the club – you get a free box lunch ! To have a good R/C it is best to have a number of very experienced racers who know what is going on and can anticipate what comes next. Just like racing, they keep their heads out of the boat, up the course, and focus the crew on what to do. However, anybody who is comfortable on a boat can be a helpful member of the R/C regardless of experience. It is not hard or demanding work and our schedule includes only a few events to volunteer for. There will be someone there to tell you what to do and when to do it. The SCC depends on members to supply boats for the signal boat and two mark set boats and possibly judge boats or observation boats. Also, for experienced R/C people consider stepping up and becoming a PRO – being in charge keeps you focused. If you are interested in joining the Race Committee, serving as a PRO, or have a boat worthy of R/C duty please contact Tom Donlan tdonlan1@verizon.net or Geoff Wadsworth at ghwadsworth@gmail.com or one of our board members and they will gladly help you to become involved. 18 NOTICE TO SCC RACERS This is a reminder to provide your handicap coordinator a list of any changes in the configuration of your boat since the last racing season or new data, e.g. PHRF rating, which may be pertinent to your SCC handicap rating. For new and old members deciding to participate in the racing program this year, please let me know and I will send the necessary forms for compiling your SCC handicap. Thanks and we look forward to another fun and successful racing season.
