Pollies help solve a Telstra mishap
A Telstra contractor, working on the National Broadband Network, brought

Safety month a winner
Brisbane Markets has marked October’s Safe Work Month
celebrations with a series of work health and safety seminars,
flyer giveaways and competitions to encourage the 4,000
people who work, or do business on the site daily, to stay safe.
One competition rewarded workers onsite with a competition
entry that they needed to correctly fill out and place in a barrel.
Forklift driver Damien Mills, of Sun Produce, won a 48”
Samsung HD LCD Led TV (valued at $808) for having the
most correct entries.
Another forklift driver, Wayne Lacey, from RW Pascoe, was
awarded an iPad mini (valued at $325), for being the first
correct safety questionnaire drawn from the barrel.

AUSVEG has confirmed it will hold its 2015 national

An estimated 1100 domestic and international delegates
attended this year’s national convention.

Aussies want first bite
Producer groups have joined forces lobbying governments to demand they buy local for the
massive food orders placed by public hospitals, schools, jails and the defence forces.
The powerful Australian Food and Grocery Council, the National Farmers Federation and the
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union want more support for local
industry and farmers and a change in public procurement policies.
They want locally grown and made foods to win any government or
public-sector supply tender as long as the Australian product costs
no more than 25% more than any overseas bid.
About two-thirds of all food and drinks bought
for government-run institutions were sourced
from overseas, according to federal Finance
Department figures published in 2012.

confirmed that Vietnam has ‘raised concerns with
Australia’s fruit fly management systems and is
considering suspending trade in Australian fruit’.

The market is worth about $40 million,
including grapes and cherries.
Cherry Growers Australia says it’s a significant
market that will affect this season’s harvest.
The issue was sparked by an email received
from a Vietnamese importer in November
stating that they were shocked to be informed
by the Vietnam Plan Protection Department
that from the 1 January 2015, fresh fruit imports
from Australia were not permitted. They
further stated that they believed that this was
unreasonable and unacceptable.
Apple and Pear Australia Limited CEO John
Dollison said the industry has to step up and
promote itself.
“We need to tell people a lot more what’s been
done in horticulture, that horticulture needs to
get a much stronger voice,” Mr Dollison said.
“It tends to get left behind livestock and dairy
and we need to raise our profile to get the
good news out there, because typically, people
are only hearing the bad news.”

Eating fresh produce makes us happy
Queensland research has found that eating large amounts
of fruit and vegetables can make you happier,
“Eating about five fruits and five vegetables [per day] makes
us the happiest we can be in that case.”
The University of Queensland study suggests eating eight or
more portions of fruit and vegetables a day improves mental
wellbeing as well as physical health.
Dr Mujcic said the effects were strongest among women,
although he did not know why.
Health economics researcher Dr Redzo Mujcic from UQ’s
school of pharmacy said the study involved more than
12,000 Australian adults.
“What I wanted to look at is whether it improves also
our mental wellbeing or mental health as well as physical
health,” Dr Mujcic told 612 ABC Brisbane.
“It comes up the more you eat the better, but there’s also
some optimal points.

The Wide Bay Burnett’s fruit, vegetable, nut and herb industry
was celebrated in style at the Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable
Growers Biennial Gala Dinner on Saturday, 11 October 2014.
The Civic Centre was brimming with growers, industry
stakeholders and dignitaries to acknowledge the hard work
and dedication of the horticulture industry in the region.
Almost 500 guests enjoyed a three course dinner comprising
fresh local produce and value-added products showcasing
the wide variety of Bundaberg’s premium products. Although
too many to list here, we would once again like to thank those
members who donated produce/products for the menu.

Cherry season is upon us

The cherry season is upon us and once again
the Brisbane Produce Market has joined forces
with Cherry Growers Australia to run an annual
Queensland cherry campaign.
Activities began in late November, including
radio advertising and a cherry competition. One
hundred lucky customers won a box of cherries
from their local fruit shop, with one major prize
winner receiving a $500 gift voucher.
