THE LAST TIME...
Minnesota Won in Overtime:
Dec. 7, 2014: Rachel Banham scored 35 points, which included the game-tying
three-pointer with 4.9 seconds to play, to lead the Gophers to a 88-86 overtime win
vs. Butler at Williams Arena.
Minnesota Had a Player Score 40 or More Points:
Feb. 14, 2002: Lindsay Whalen scored a career-high 41 points, leading Minnesota to
a 73-64 win over No. 7 Purdue. It was the fifth game over 40 points in Minnesota’s
women’s basketball history.
Minnesota Lost in Overtime:
Jan. 19, 2014: The Gophers suffered their second-straight overtime loss, 83-78, on
the road at Indiana. Rachel Banham made a free throw with 38 seconds remaining
to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Minnesota Had Four Players Score in Double Figures:
Nov. 28, 2014: Four Gophers scored in double figures as Minnesota defeated College
of Charleston, 74-50, at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Carlie Wagner (17), Shae Kelley
(10), Kayla Hirt (13) and Amanda Zahui B. (10) all scored in double figures. It was
the fifth time in 2014-15 that four players scored in double figures.
Minnesota Played a Double Overtime Game:
Dec. 30, 2012: Rachel Banham scored a career-high 39 points, including 33 after

Williams Arena.
Minnesota Won on a Last-Second Shot:
Feb. 21, 2013: Rachel Banham hit a jumper in the paint with 0.02 seconds left to give
Minnesota a 57-56 victory at Ohio State. The win in Columbus was just the second
in program history for the Gophers.
Minnesota Lost on a Last-Second Shot:
Nov. 25, 2011: The Gophers dropped a 64-62 game to Quinnipiac in Moraga, Calif.,
as part of the St. Mary’s Concord Hilton Tournament. The Bobcat’s Jasmine Martin
hit a jumper with 1.9 seconds left in the contest to help Quinnipiac advance to the
championship contest.
Minnesota Won on a Last-Second Free Throw:
Jan. 8, 1995: Cara Pearson hit both free throws with no time remaining to give the
Gophers a 68-67 upset win over No. 19 Purdue at the Sports Pavilion. The made
free throws are only part of the strangest ending to a game in Gopher history. After
Pearson hit her first one to tie the game, the Minnesota players both on the court
and off the bench mobbed Pearson thinking the game was over. It was only tied and
Minnesota was charged with a technical foul for leaving the bench. Pearson made
her second free throw to give the Gophers a two-point lead. Purdue’s Stacey Lovelace
stepped to the line with a chance to tie the score and made the first free throw, but
missed the second.

Year in her first season as a head coach
HEAD COACH MARLENE STOLLINGS
FIRST SEASON • OHIO, 1998
Marlene Stollings was named
the 11th head coach of the
University of Minnesota women’s basketball program on
April 7, 2014, following two
successful years at Virginia
Commonwealth
University
where she led the Rams to a
33-29 record and one of the
top turnarounds in the nation in 2013-14. Prior to that,
Stollings led a one-year resurgence at Winthrop University in 2011-12, where the
Eagles posted just their second winning season in
the last 26 years of the program.
As an assistant coach at Ole Miss, Stollings helped
sign the 2009 class, arguably the best recruiting
class in nearly 30 years, including Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year and Mississippi Miss Basketball Valencia McFarland. Ole Miss had two additional classes ranked in the top-50 in 2010 (42nd)
and 2011 (39th), during her tenure with the Rebels.
Stollings is known for infusing a fun and fast-paced
style of play into her programs, with her offensiveminded game shattering scoring records and bringing unprecedented success in each of her first two
head coaching stops.
Stollings began her collegiate playing career at Ohio
State University where she was a two-time scholar
athlete for the Buckeyes. Stollings then transferred
to Ohio University where she earned first-team AllMid-American Conference honors after finishing
eighth in the nation and leading the league in scoring at 22.9 points per game her senior year. She
served as team captain for the Bobcats and earned
Kodak All-American honorable mention honors in
1998. Stollings remains in the Ohio record books
with 10 three-point baskets and 41 points scored in
a single game.
In 2013-14, VCU’s offensive production surged
under Stollings’ system, as the team set school records with a 75.8 points-per-game average and 235
three-point field goals. The Rams scored 90 or more
points on five occasions and twice notched a schoolrecord 112 points over the course of the year.
The team posted a 22-10 overall record and earned
a berth in the 2014 Women’s National Invitation
Tournament (WNIT). VCU’s 22 wins were the thirdmost in program history and gave the Rams just
their sixth 20-win season in school history.
In her first year as a collegiate head coach, Stollings
guided the 2011-12 Winthrop squad to more than
40 team and individual school records and only its
second winning season (18-13) in 26 years. Selected 2012 Big South Conference Coach of the Year,
her 18 wins were the most by any first-year coach in
program history. Stollings’ aggressive style paid off
as Winthrop averaged a program-record 69.6 points
per game, ranked 10th nationally with an average of
7.6 three-point field goals per game and posted 80
or more points a school-record nine times.
Prior to joining the Eagles, Stollings served as an
assistant at Southeastern Conference power Ole
Miss from 2007-11, while serving the final season
as the Rebels’ associate head coach. Her more than
decade-long coaching and recruiting career also includes stops at Saint Louis, Wright State, New Mexico State and Jacksonville (Fla.).
During her career, Stollings has seen tremendous
success on the recruiting trail. Shortly after being
named head coach at VCU, Stollings assembled a
six-player recruiting class that ranked 38th nationally and third-highest among non-BCS programs.
Included among that recruiting class was Camille
Calhoun, a guard/forward who was listed as a fourstar recruit and among the top 100 recruits in the
country.
Prior to pursuing a career as a college coach,
Stollings played one season professionally for Club
ABB Baden in Switzerland. While playing professionally in Europe, Stollings coached a men’s club team
to an undefeated season. She was later invited to
the WNBA’s Utah Starzz training camp in 1999, and
also played for the NWBL Mobile Majesty.
Considered one of the finest scorers to ever play in
the basketball-rich state of Ohio (Beaver-Eastern
HS), Stollings was a two-time Division III High School
Player of the Year and four-time conference Player
of the Year. She earned Kodak All-American honors her senior season and her name currently appears more than 30 times in the OHSAA (Ohio High
School Athletic Association) record books. Stollings
still holds the state high school basketball scoring
record (boys and girls) with 3,514 points, ahead of
LeBron James’ 2,657.
A native of Beaver, Ohio, Stollings graduated in 1998
from Ohio University where she earned a bachelor’s
of business administration in marketing and a bachelor’s of science in sport industry.
