Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,
As we anticipate the World Gathering of Families in Philadelphia in September 2015, it is good to celebrate this Feast of the Holy
Family. Let us pray for our own families and those we know and don’t know, that God may grant them special graces in the New
Year to celebrate gifts of unity and peace! Happy New Year to all!

Some have inquired about a deadline for submitting requests for Memorial Bricks for our Grotto project behind the Parish Life
Center. As the project will not likely be undertaken until the Spring, we can certainly consider at least a January 31st date as a
current deadline. Please use one of the forms at the exits of the church to record your information and return it with payment to
the rectory. Some have also been confused with the form. You are allowed up to 13 letters and spaces per line (16 on the largest
brick); extra lines after the first three are an additional $15 per line for the larger-sized bricks. If you need help composing the
text, please let me know what you would like to say and I will happily help you with the arrangement. I hope many of you will
want to be part of this historic project to provide some beautiful and functional outdoor meditation space in honor of our Blessed
Mother and some of the saints.

My Catholic Faith? There’s an APP for that!
Did you ever wonder: How can I find out more about my Catholic faith? How do I pray the Rosary? How can I grow in my
faith? Where can I meet like-minded Catholics? What is a disciple of Jesus Christ—am I one? What is the Pope saying today?
Check out the free new mobile app “Newark Evangelization” at your App Store. This free app found on the App Store at
“Newark Evangelization” will be the resource “in the palm of your hand” which will allow you to answer these questions and
many more. It will be a fountain of information and inspiration for anyone interested in the Catholic faith. The site also offers
helpful information to inquiring non-Catholics or inactive Catholics.
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Readings
Our first two readings focus on the promise of offspring made to Abraham; the Gospel speaks of the fulfillment of that promise in
Jesus. The story of Abraham draws our attention to the importance of offspring in the ancient world. Of course, children and
family were thought of very differently in those days. Family life was not a path to personal fulfillment or a private haven from
the rest of life’s harsh realities. Rather, in a thoroughly unsentimental way, children were valuable economic assets, enriching
their parents through their labor, as well as a way in which one could live on after death through one’s descendants.
God’s promise of descendants to Abraham is fufilled in Jesus, though in an unexpected way. Jesus is the one through whom
Abraham and his descendants can hope for life beyond death, by drawing them into eternal life with God. Indeed, the fulfillment
in Jesus of God’s promise to Abraham is so abundant that it overflows beyond the circle of Abraham and his descendants to bless
all peoples. As our Gospel reading says, Jesus is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
“Father, your Son Jesus knew the joys and challenges of belonging to a human family. Through the prayers and example of the
Holy Family, may we come to know ourselves as your adopted sons and daughters. Amen.”
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“...as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” Colossians 3: 13
Forgiveness—one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone.
As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone—maybe someone in
your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor, or maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone today!
Our Sunday Offering: Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014—$17,749.59

Special Collection to Catholic Relief Services
to support the work of the Church in combating Ebola
Bishop Paul Coakley, Chairman of the Catholic Relief Services Board of Directors, has contacted all U.S. Dioceses to consider
taking up a second collection to support the work of the Church in combating Ebola. These contributions will help save lives of
those caught in a desperate situation not of their own making. In carrying out its gospel mission on behalf of the Catholic
community in the United States, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has been active in the countries most affected by Ebola—Liberia,
Sierra Leone, and Guinea. After the outbreak CRS committed $1.5 million of its emergency funds and sought support from various
donors to further its work in fighting the virus. Without a vaccine or cure, the best weapon against Ebola is information about how
to avoid contracting and spreading it. That is the focus of CRS’ effort, working with the local Church.
In Liberia, CRS has also been instrumental in helping to reopen a major Catholic health facility that closed when many of its staff
died from Ebola. In Sierra Leone, CRS is working to see that those who die of Ebola, their bodies dangerously infectious, receive
burials that are both safe and dignified, respectful of culture and customs. These are difficult tasks, which CRS staff members have
taken on with the kind of dedication we have come to expect from our agency. But much work remains to be done, first to contain
Ebola and, in the longer term, to lessen the damage it has done
.
Archbishop Myers has approved an Optional Special Collection to be taken up the weekend of January 3-4, 2015 in all
parishes. Personal checks should be payable to “Archdiocese of Newark–CRS Ebola Collection.” Thank you for your help!
