Cuban Lies
Lügen auf Kubanisch
The talented but unemployed Cuban actress, Ana, decides to sign up as a protagonist in a documentary film about prostitution – first and foremost so that her family will be able to afford a new refrigerator.
She plays her part with such great authenticity and believability, that she soon becomes the focus of
the film. Inevitably, this brings total chaos to Ana’s real life. When, on top of everything, the director,
Helmut, falls in love with her, the carefully constructed tissue of lies threatens to fall apart. The film
shows the everyday life and survival strategy in an unadorned yet humorous way of a woman who has
become trapped in her own web of lies. “Cuban Lies” is an eloquent, humorous and lively comedy.

Swim For Your Life
Die Freischwimmerin
Ilayda, a 17-year old Turkish schoolgirl, lives with her very well integrated family in a foreign country.
Since the death of her father, she herself has focused heavily on her religion and is wearing a headscarf again. As a result she is becoming increasingly isolated from her class at school. She is a keen
swimmer and secretly pursues her passion at night-time in the school’s swimming pool. When her
sports teacher, Martha, becomes aware of this, she tries to bring Ilayda back into the class community through the school’s swimming team. The problem is that she would have to take off her headscarf
and burka and swim in an ordinary swimming costume for the competition …

How to Steal a Kiss
Alles Schwindel
Never Kiss a Christmas Angel!
Weihnachtsengel küsst man nicht
The Kiss has gone. It’s been stolen! For Leopold, the owner of the world-famous Klimt painting, it’s the best and only good piece of news he’s had in
years. He isn’t allowed to sell the Klimt, but with the insurance money he
can finally pay off his debts. However, he hasn’t reckoned with Isabella.
She knows that the stolen Klimt is a fake and is holding Leopold, of all
people, responsible for finding it again before the whole swindle is exposed – a refreshing comedy of errors with TV stars such as Ursula Strauss,
Benno Fürmann, Udo Samel and many more.
Lina is perfectly satisfied with her casual job as a model in adverts and
small photo shoots, with her relationship with Alex, who has at least promised to leave his wife soon, with her best friend, Nettie, and generally with
her life overall. It could all be so simple and harmonious. But during the
run-up to Christmas, Lina realises that life could have even better things in
store for her. Rudi, for example. At first, though, the somewhat eccentric
reindeer farmer and former advertising executive doesn’t make it at all easy
for Lina to tell that he could be her Mr. Right.

Live is Life – Late Bloomers
Live is Life – Die Spätzünder
Live is Life – No Time to Lose
Live is Life – Der Himmel soll warten
Jail sentence or community service? 100 days of pushing senior citizens
around in their wheelchairs in a retirement home is a 100 times better than
life behind bars. Wanted by the cops, kicked out of his own band, Rocco
hits bottom. But his seniors haven’t forgotten him, and now they want him
to form a band with them so that they can win the band contest’s 100,000
euro prize and buy their freedom from the hated home director. “Rocco and
the Pacemakers” is born, and they’re out to rock ’n’ roll!
Since their big hit, “Live is Life”, Rocco and the Pacemakers have made the
most of their fame with countless gigs. But even though their music makes
them feel youthful, they haven’t actually got any younger. After one of the
band members has a dizzy spell, the group, with Degenhard and Sissy leading the way, decide to put an end to the tour. Rocco takes their wishes on
board with a heavy heart. And so they return to the retirement home, where
in the meantime Rocco’s flame, Marina, has become the warden. The gentle
Marina may have put a stop to the harsh regime of her predecessor, Frau
Glück, but now the pendulum is swinging too far in the other direction.
An extraordinary comedy about seniors in a rock band which was that successful that a second part followed.

A guest falls onto the roof of a taxi from the top
floor of a hotel near Vienna’s Opera House. He is
dead. But is it suicide or murder? The dead man
is Dr. Bansari, an Iranian diplomat and nuclear
physicist. The Iranian Embassy and Austrian Foreign Ministry immediately weigh in. Both try to
keep the case strictly under wraps, but the investigating team of Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner will
not be deterred from pressing ahead with their
enquiries. In the process they stumble across
business dealings that a lobbyist is pursuing for
a high-tech company. This company manufactures pumps and valves that could possibly be
used in atomic reactors. A major deal has just
been closed and the goods are thought to be making their way to Iran via third countries. This, at
least, is the possible assumption of the Israeli
secret services, who are suspected of having a
hand in the death of Dr. Bansari and of sending
an assassination squad.

Moritz Eisner has a serious problem: He has been shot and as a result has
retrograde amnesia. In other words he can remember some things, but
others not at all. Furthermore, nobody knows what he was doing. Despite
being sick, Moritz looks in his office for clues, but his boss sends him home
again. Eventually Eisner sets out to discover what actually happened. He
takes up residence in the local inn, where the incident took place, and is
soon recognised by some of the village’s inhabitants. Little by little, pieces
of the puzzle come to light, and when a body is found in the place where
Moritz was also shot, it seems that the case might have something to do
with the far-right movement.
A twelve-year old boy on his BMX bike sprays an ex-prostitute with a petrolfilled water gun as she stands on the street, smoking. She goes up in flames
and dies of her burns. The boy is caught. But because of his age he cannot
be prosecuted. Bibi Fellner, formerly a vice officer, quickly feels at home in
the environment that she has known for decades. The scene is extremely
brutal. It is ruled by Bulgarians, Turks and Chechens. The boy is a Bulgarian
whose mother is being made to work under duress as a clandestine prostitute by a pimp who compels women to work for him. He forced the boy to
set fire to the ex-prostitute because she betrayed him and put him in prison, from where he has recently been released …

Vier Frauen und ein Todesfall
Julie, Maria, Sabine and Henriette – four remarkable women sharing an exceptional pastime – join
forces in order to bring some excitement to the boring village life by suspecting murder in all those
cases which initially seem to point to the opposite.
Never failing to be present at any village funeral,
they investigate the deaths by unnatural cause
in a highly unconventional way. In the second
season of the series, Henriette helps out Julie
with a friendly turn, indispensable to Julie’s life
and as a consequence has to go to jail for quite
some time. Mona, a young community doctor
with investigative skills and medical expertise,
joins the team. Due to her work abroad her sister
Lola quickly takes her place in the third season

Angelica Fast is in her mid-thirties, a divorced
single mother – and a successful investigator at
Vienna’s criminal investigation department. The
good-looking young woman handles the balancing act between her job and parental duties
with humour. Even if her teenage twins keep her
on her toes, she goes all out for the pursuit of
criminals. That professional and private life isn’t
always separable, is not least due to her ex-husband, the chief of forensics: Some teasing is part

childrearing is discussed on the crime scene.

Braunschlag
Braunschlag
Braunschlag is a more or less idyllic place in
Austria, whose inhabitants are a league of their
own. Among others there’s a former beauty
queen, a UFO landing site operator, a pair of
weird doctors and the gouvernor’s nephew.
Gerhard Tschach, mayor of Braunschlag, has a
problem: After several failed business ventures,
his town is bankrupt. Therefore, with his best
friend, disco‑owner Richard Pfeisinger, he decides to fake a Marian apparition, to make tourists
flood the ailing town and bring about the hopedfor financial recovery. Braunschlag starts to flourish, but the two hard-drinking men soon lose
control. Somewhere between the delusions of
the locals, pressure from the state capital, intractable marital problems and the Vatican, the situation escalates more and more – and the miracle of
Braunschlag is becoming a nightmare fast.

Paul Kemp – No Big Deal
Paul Kemp – Alles kein Problem
Paul Kemp is a mediator by profession. He is a
trained psychologist and sociologist with a big
heart and understanding of all of people’s problems. The clients who come to his practice come
from all sections of society and guide him into
the field of human shortcomings, where he is
needed – and able – to demonstrate his skills as
a mediator and arbitrator which result often in
highly original solutions. But whilst he deals
imaginatively and nimbly with the conflicts of
others, Paul Kemp has very little grip on his private life and family, where things are increasingly getting out of hand. He has to face his wife’s
relationship with their neighbour, Christian, and
has problems with his business partner, who has
driven the company into debt and made a run for
it. And Paul Kemp is also involved in a short-term
relationship with Lisa that is developing into a
long-term catastrophe.

Mr. Punch
Servus Kasperl
“Is everybody out there? Yesssss!” The famous
tag-line used to start the show by Mr. Punch or
“Kasperl”, as he is called in German-speaking
countries, is well known by every child. The
household name of the Austrian childrens television has entertained his fans for over five decades. To ensure the traditional children’s hero will
be able to amuse children for another 50 years
the ORF has revamped the show and redesigned
its star. The core of the show is an imaginative adventure story, presented in a traditional puppetshow style, with Kasperl and his friends. Interactivity is an integral part of the show as Kasperl
rhymes and sings with the kids. Kasperl’s adventures are about friendship, helping others and
solving problems by using one’s wits. “Kasperl”
represents entertainment for young and old –
traditional puppet-show at its finest!

Get the Knack!
Genau so geht’s!
The focus of every story in “Get the Knack!” is the
question “how does it actually work?”. The aim is
to bring about the “Eureka effect” for every viewer
as the penny finally drops at the end of each item.
Every episode is a grab bag of “Eureka” surprises
– nevertheless, there are recurrent themes to
which the viewer can look forward. Subjects range
from the high-tech to supposedly boring everyday
objects. In exciting experiments viewers discover,
for example, how to make clouds in a plastic bottle or how to make a piece of soap swim. Foolproof
instructions and simple ingredients mean that the
experiments can immediately be imitated at home.
“Get the Knack!” is an entertaining science show
with modern visual language and a high cutting
rate.

Inspired by Friedrich Ludwig Zacharias Werner’s
drama “Attila, König der Hunnen” (1809), Giuseppe
Verdi composed the enthralling score of his opera
“Attila” : Verdi created rousing and immediately
accessible choruses, arias and duets with expansive melodies for the bloodthirsty story of the
battle between the heathen invaders and Christian Italy under the leadership of Rome. The work
is bursting with energy and belongs unmistakably to Verdi’s first successful period. The individual characters of the protagonists are less well
defined but full of passion, a circumstance that
elicited great enthusiasm when the work was first

There are very few legends such as Herbert von

only with Enrico Caruso or Maria Callas, but with
the exception that the conductor could eternally
preserve a great part of his oeuvres thanks to the

early recordings and even the very young Karajan
is documented on film. His last life decade was
dedicated to quality documentation on a very
high level of his most important oeuvres for future generations.

Shadows of the Past – The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra 1938 – 1945
Schatten der Vergangenheit – Die Wiener Philharmoniker 1938 – 1945
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is still often called “Nazi orchestra”, as the past has been haunting
them for many years. Will the brown shadow of Austria’s most important cultural export ever fade
away? This extraordinary documentary highlights the consistency with which the Vienna Philharmonics charged a commission of historians to clear their past. Archive material that has never been shown
before gives incredible insights into the Nazi past of Austria’s most famous orchestra. Finally, the film
dissolves the captivating mystery of the ring of honor, traditionally lent by the “philharmonics”, which
was brought to Baldur von Schirach in 1967.

Mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager lives
her life spanning the gap between professional
success and dedication to her family. In this
documentary she was accompanied for nearly
a year, showing a very intimate look at Ms.
Kirchschlager’s professional and private life.
Arik Brauer has many identities that are just
as colourful as his pictures: Viennese, Jewish,
Israeli, cosmopolitan, socially committed. As
a painter, musician, architect, sculptor and
performer on stage, he is also creative. In this
film he recalls the time that became a lifelong
inspiration and fixed reference point for him.

Winter 2013 sees the opening of the 248 metrehigh DC Tower designed by the French architect,
Dominque Perrault. Starting from this giant
made of glass and steel, the film sets out on a
journey through new architectural highlights.
This documentary takes a journey 6,000 years
back in time to the late Neolithic and early Bronze ages, which is when the first over-water settlements on stilts, which are described here, were
built. The greatest surprise during filming was
how sensationally fresh and unscathed the finds
that were uncovered from the mud appeared to
be. The same applies to all of the wooden
household contents that have been uncovered,
such as bowls and baskets, as well as the remains of food, materials, ropes and threads. This
factor was decisive in UNESCO deciding to place
at least some of the approximately 1,000 sites in
the Alpine region under protection as world heritage sites.

A Cowboy Church in California
Fest im Sattel – Eine Cowboykirche in Kalifornien
A World Through Glasses
Reiseckers Reisen
Time seems to have stood still in the small Californian town of Norco. Although the 25,000-strong
community is barely an hour away from Los Angeles, there is no hint of the fast-paced, urban life
here. Hay bales pile up at the side of the road and
the main means of transport are on horseback.
After all, there are more horses in Norco than there are residents. And in Norco a traditional church has become a cowboy church. The services
are held outdoors, instead of organ music country songs are played on the banjo, and worshippers pray from the saddle – in muddy boots and
dirty shirts. American traditions, a longing for
days gone by and a close connection to nature
come together in the cowboy church to produce
an extraordinary yet warm and romantic picture.
“A World Through Glasses” is an innovative and
personal travel documentary in episode form.
A camera concealed in his eyeglasses and an audio recorder in his pocket, the narrator encounters his subjects in his own way and gets them to
tell the stories of their lives, their daily routine, or
whatever oddities interest them. Thanks to his
spy camera one can feel like part of the story
rather than just spectator.
“A World Through Glasses” is a combination of a
documentary and a road movie which seeks out
the unusual and encounters the country and its
people in a refreshingly new way.

It’s a Kind of Magic – Christmas in Innsbruck
Magische Weihnachten in Innsbruck
Dark Days and Rough Nights –
Mysterious Christmas Stories
Wildes Treiben an dunklen Tagen –
Weihnachtsgeschichten in den Rauhnächten
Christmas in the west of Austria is a winter dream, a romantic fairytale between the snow-covered mountains. Innsbruck celebrates Christmas with a
lot of specialties like the traditional arrival-procession of Santa Claus which
starts in the romantic city part St. Nikolaus, the magnificently decorated,
medieval old town with its Christmas fair. However, there are many other
Christmas miracles like the special, hand-made candles, the manufactured bells of the bell foundry or a holy mass which is held early in the
morning.
While everybody knows the beautiful, holy and peaceful Christmas stories
one main Christmas story which was supposed to happen in the pre-Christian time has nearly been forgotten. This was a time where the dark days
and nights have not only been celebrated but they where also populated by
wild women, witches and talking animals. What was the story behind this
wild hunt and those women? Were they really dangerous for men? Is it true
that if they got in contact with the wild women they lost their sight and became blind? This documentary leads through a mysterious Christmas world
and tells about talking animals, exciting Christmas witches and a lot of
other Christmas unrevealed secrets.
The ceremonies continue until the 6th of January. Up to then one could get a lot
of impressions of Christmas in Innsbruck, also some which are apparently
hidden. Let yourself dive into the unique magic of Christmas .

India’s Rug-Manufacturers – A Tragic Carpet Ride
Flieg, Teppich flieg! – Fairer Lohn für harte Arbeit
India’s Cotton – Tears, Sweat and Hope
Indiens Baumwolle – Stoff aus Schweiß und Tränen
Today, India is the undisputed and largest exporter of hand-made carpets.
400,000 people live from weaving carpets, whilst 2 million are involved in
their production somewhere along the line. And even though these works of
art fetch very high prices in Europe or America, the wages and working conditions of the craftsmen and women are still in a sorry state. Since 1995,
Label Step, the fair trade organisation, has worked to bring about an improvement in the living conditions of the workers, and has definitely registered
some success.
Cotton is also known as white gold. After China, India is the world’s largest
producer. But even white gold has dark shadows. Falling prices mean that
millions of small farmers and harvesters in India have barely enough to survive on. And even though only five percent of farmland in India is planted
with cotton, 50 percent of all of the pesticides used fall on cotton fields,
which, in addition to being an economic catastrophe, is also an ecological
one. But there is renewed hope for the small farmers and seasonal workers,
as organic cotton experiences a boom. Minimum wages are guaranteed and
child labour is forbidden. This is allowing many to dream again. Not of palaces and of gold, but of a somewhat better, fairer life.
At the heart of this documentary is a journey along the so-called “carpet road”
in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which is one of the most backward
states in India. The documentary shows the life of agricultural workers, weavers, dyers and traders, and flies with the carpets to Europe.

The Near-Death Phenomenon –
Is There Life After Death?
Phänomen Nahtod –
Gibt es ein Leben nach dem Tod?
Miracle of Healing
Wunder Heilung
The Roots of Violence
Wie Gewalt entsteht
How should one speak about something for which
there are no words? In general, those who have
been narrowly “brought back to life” report leaving
their physical body, being bathed in heavenly light,
experiencing cosmic harmony and meeting the
dead when they speak of their experiences. Quite
apart from speculation about the veracity or the
cultural determinacy of such reports, it is certain
that near-death experiences are more than momentous for those concerned, and in many cases
can lead to positive changes in the way they live
their lives and deal with death. The film gives a
voice to those who are able to report from their
own acute experiences.
Kurt Langbein survived carcinosis by radiation
therapy. The question is how long does the diagnosis “being healed for the present” last? The
well-known science-journalist – conducted by his
own motivation – started to get to the bottom of
the special parameters mobilizing one’s immune
system, being able to heal carcinosis finally. In
fact there are people, so called moribunded
cause of suffering carcinosis, but contrary to diagnostics being in the best of health. Some of
them are known as “medical miracle”, others just
try to find out some unorthodox “attraction to
New Age healing”. What does academic medicine
know about how healing works? What becomes
more important – the therapy or the therapist?
Violence came about as a result of a settled way
of life. Archaeological finds show that hunters
and gatherers lived relatively peacefully, preferring to avoid one another rather than smash each
other’s skulls if a conflict arose. It was only with
the onset of farming and the first villages that serious violence developed among human beings.
Exclusion engenders violence. This separation
between “us” and “others” has been and still is
misused by politicians. The history of nationalism
shows this to a terrifying extent – most recently in
Bosnia, when 8,400 people were murdered.

Freedom of Thought –
Fair Punishment for the Criminally Insane
Freiheit in Gedanken –
Gerechte Strafe für geistig abnorme Rechtsbrecher
Myth Fairness:
A Social Future from Rage and Courage
Mythos Gerechtigkeit:
Von Wut und Mut einer gesellschaftlichen Zukunft
The criminally insane are incarcerated as dangerous felons and offenders,
who, due to an absence of criminal responsibility, cannot be judged. But
did they really not know what they were doing? Are they rebels without a
cause? Can there be fair punishment for the criminally insane? How does
anyone live with the prospect of having no prospect of freedom?
There is no question that is as passionately debated, about which so many
political feuds have been conducted, and over which so many bitter tears
have been shed. This question, like no other, has caused the greatest
minds in human history to ponder so deeply and yet deliver so few answers:
the question of fairness.
Statements from inmates, such as “for me freedom means that I can write
my letters, that now and again I can receive a package, but actually, that my
thoughts remain free”, shape this unique film, which portrays everyday life
in prison from the point of view of insane lawbreakers for the first time.
Why must entire nations pay for the unscrupulous speculations of a few
financial jugglers with such rigorous austerity packages? How can the number of millionaires be on the increase in spite of the worldwide financial
crises? What makes internet activism such as the Anonymous grouping illegal, whilst global players such as “Google” and “Facebook” blatantly trade
our data? Can the murder of a tyrant ever be right, and do the lottery of birth
and our living conditions have anything to do with fairness?

Singing Instead of Shooting
Singen statt Schießen
Where Have All the Girls Gone
Sag mir wo die Mädchen sind
We Are Democracy
Wir sind Demokratie
What are a rabbi, an imam and a priest doing together? In Antakya, formerly known as Antioch,
they are singing in a choir – under the leadership
of a young Turkish conductor. The “Choir of the
Civilisations” sees itself as a multicultural answer
to the growing religious and ethnic tensions in the
region. Today, Antakya, at one time the “cradle of
Christianity”, lies on one of the most dangerous
borders in the world, that with Syria. There, the
conflict between Sunnis, Alaouites and Christians
has escalated into civil war. In the nearby Antakya
these groups are continuing to live side by side in
peace. Yet here too the tensions are increasing
and the war in Syria is threatening to spill over
into the entire region.
In India there is massive discrimination against
women and girls. From birth, girls are neglected,
poorly fed, their needs are inadequately met and
they are not allowed to go to school. For good
measure, China and India have made a name for
themselves through the practice of selectively
aborting female foetuses. The population is growing, but the growth is not natural. In Asia, far
more boys are being born than girls. Today the
continent is missing 160 million women. In the
past, cultural traditions were blamed for this development, but it would appear that the reasons
are rather more economic in nature.
Capitalism and democracy – is this apparent
forced marriage heading for divorce? Has the triumphal march of capitalism left democracy, and
we citizens with it, to fall by the wayside? Taking
examples in Spain, Germany, Iceland, Switzerland and Austria, this film examines concrete alternatives to gauge their effectiveness. From
symbolic ideas, the implementation of new economic systems and the education of young people about democracy, to the participation of citizens in government, people throughout Europe
are looking for something with which to counter
a society in crisis. Documenting, scrutinising and
reflecting on this essential exploratory movement for new contemporary forms of social and
economic coexistence in light of the current situation constitutes the abiding undertone of this
documentary film, its images and its narrative.
A fascinating documentary that looks at the current situation in Syria from a slightly different
angle.

God’s Army – God’s Enemy:
Violence, Terror and Religious Persecution in Nigeria
Gottes Krieger – Gottes Feinde:
Christenverfolgung in Nigeria
The film “God’s Army – God’s Enemy” is the first documentary that investigates the background of the
bloody conflicts in Nigeria as the starting point of the Islamic terror. The “Mother of Boko Haram” –
a very controversial lawyer and self-proclaimed human rights activist – delivers insight into the world of
religious terror organizations and presents their point of view regarding the threatening religious war.
However, the origin of the mysterious radical-Islamic group “Boko Haram”, often called the “Taliban
of Africa”, lies in Mohammed Yusuf, an already dead leader of a sect, and in the place of origin, the
North-Nigerian city Maiduguri. Maiduguri and the meeting with the Boko-Haram-warriors is the last
stop on a long journey through a shattered country which is torn apart by the religion of its inhabitants.

Iran – Life Under Pressure

Did you know that Tehran’s most popular hospital is Jewish? The Sapihr clinic, located in a poor
neighborhood in the south of Iran’s capital, offers treatment free of charge to those in need. 99
percent of the patients are Muslims, but doctors
and nurses get their salary from the Jewish community. After the Iranian Revolution, seven out of
ten Jews left Iran. The remaining 30,000 claim

warriors brought Islam. Since 1979 Jews enjoy an
ambivalent status as a “protected minority”.

The End of the Welfare State
Sozialabbau in Europa – Was tun?
The Struggle for Housing – Unaffordable Living in Europe?
Der neue Häuserkampf – Wird Wohnen in Europa bald unbezahlbar?
All over Europe, governments are going on the
offensive: the middle classes, and also the unemployed and young people are being expected
to pay the bill for the crisis in the public finances.
The austerity policies in the majority of EU countries are leading to job losses and salary cuts, to
hopelessness and an undermining of the principle of solidarity in society. German experts already
fear a state of affairs like that experienced during
the Weimar Republic. And all this comes against
a background of rising profits for big business
and the banks. But resistance is growing. New
protest campaigns are gaining increasing numbers of supporters, under the rallying cry, “We
won’t pay for your crisis!”
The migration into large European cities is unbroken. Living space in Europe’s metropolises is
going to be scarcer and more expensive. “The
Struggle for Housing” describes alternatives to
escape this insanity:

Another new option offers the so-called Cohousing, a planned community that consists of
private apartments or houses that are supplemented by extensive communal facilities.
However, this housing policy has practically

This documentary portrays people who work full

Brazil has a super-dynamic economy and Rio de
Janeiro is one of the most beautiful and pulsating
cities on earth. Yet in the vast poor quarters of
the city, drug-related crime and naked violence
have long been rife. Suppressing this violence is
currently the city’s greatest challenge. There are
over a hundred slums that are ruled by armed
drug gangs which have no infrastructure. For too
long the state has ignored the needs of the poor.
Together with special units of the military police,
this documentary is about the visit to the Morro
do Alemao favela, which until recently was known
as the most dangerous part of Rio de Janeiro.
Globalisation has been long under way in Brazil:
powerful concerns buy up entire rain forests and
deforest them in order to plant fields of Soya.
This documentary focuses on this vast and invasive reclamation process and its social and ecological ramifications. The starting point is the
newly paved tarmac road, the BR163, which runs
right through the rain forests of the Amazon.
Once upon a time it was natural rubber and gold
that drove people into the Amazon looking for
wealth or a better life: Today it is the Soya boom.
As a result, land prices along the BR163 constantly rise and it is often only through illegal land
grabbing that people can secure a spot.

World in a Ball
Der Ball ist rund
Street Children in Ecuador
Kinder der Straße
This documentary shows the very contradictory consequences of globalisation in a single, remote setting: in the secret world capital of soccer in northeast
Pakistan, Sialkot. According to a Pakistani legend, the ball is not only round,
but also a “Golden Ball”, a “Gola Zareen”. In Sialkot, 50,000 workers sew
about forty million handmade balls per year. That’s seventy percent of the
hand-stitched soccer balls on the world market. It takes about three hours to
finish a ball. The business, which began more than 100 years ago with the
manufacture of balls, hockey sticks, and cricket bats for their British colonial
masters, kept booming for decades and is economically important for all Pakistan. Now burgeoning competition is posing a threat: el cheapo balls from
China are becoming better and better, and high-tech products from Thailand
are becoming cheaper and cheaper.
Many Ecuadorian children, fleeing from the violence of broken families, end
up on the streets where they eke out a living as shoe cleaners, cigarette
sellers or pick pockets. To give them hope for a better future the Salesians
of Don Bosco in Ecuador began a project many years ago called “Golasco –
football for street children”. In specially designed football schools the
children make new friends and develop a new outlook on life while playing
football. The film shows the different phases of this sensitive re-socialization process, from the first contact between social workers and children living on the streets to their reintegration into the school system and their
eventual reunification with their families.

Attention – A Life in Extremes
Attention – A Life in Extremes
Modern day heroes, people who stand out from
the crowd through their special skills and extraordinary adventurism to risk the physical and
mental transgression of limits. But what makes
the heroes do this? Which career did those people experience, who are at the alleged head of a
socially recognized elite popularity? Which events,
thoughts and goals made people to adventurers?
And are these heroes really as self-determined
as it seems at first sight?
This film, which is based on the stories of three
extraordinary men, will give an unusual perspective on the conditions and the extremely increasing expressions of our modern society. The filmteam accompanies a wingsuit flyer, a freediver
and an extreme cyclist in their ambitious plan to
reach the top of the sports world. They fly along
craggy cliffs, dive without oxygen equipment in
the depths of sea and compete during inconceivably exhausting cycling tours – an evidence of
the undreamed performance of the human body.

Herbs – Crafts
Die Kraft der Kräuter
Never before have the oldest companions of human beings, herbs, been presented in film in this
way. With a specially developed process, the
growth, blossoming and withering of medicinal
and poisonous plants can be experienced in fast
motion. However, not in the old, familiar manner,
with static shots, but with pans, zooms or as tracking shots over meadows! This is a presentation
technique at the highest international level!
The content of this fascinating documentary itself is also revolutionary: the simplest culinary
herbs, such as chives, cress, basil, etc. contain
highly effective substances of extreme importance for pharmacology.

Emperor Franz Joseph and World War I
Kaiser Franz und der erste Weltkrieg
After the assassination of the heir to the throne,
Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914,
emperor Franz Joseph signed the declaration of
war against Serbia. Misled by the military and
political forces, the 84 year old monarch provoked an apocalypse. Initially, the offensive was
intended to be limited by territory and time.
However, it ended in one of the vastest mass
mortality in human history. The film shows the
first three years of war, from 1914 until the death
of Emperor Franz Joseph, husband of the popular
Empress Sissy, in November 1916, analysing the
background, motives and mechanisms of a war
that was fought not only for political and military
dominance but also for the “salvation of the occident”. A battle between East and West, between

The Power of Women –
Mistresses in the Congress of Vienna
Der Wiener Kongress und die Macht der Frauen
Lost Lives – Women in Gulag
Verlorene Leben – Frauen im Gulag
Autumn 1814: Vienna stood at the center of the world at that time, as, after
25 years of revolutionary upheaval and the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the
Congress of Vienna, the largest gathering of the leading statesmen of their
time to date, was intended to bring a stable framework for peace to Europe.
However, the monarchs and diplomats did not take the important decisions
in the conference rooms, but rather in the ballrooms and parlours. Social
occasions and riotous parties were the breeding ground for affairs and manipulation, intrigues and pacts, at which the mistresses and lovers of the
statesmen pulled the strings.
In the 1920s many European women emigrated to the Soviet Union in
search of a new and better life. Their goal was to build up a new society
where unemployment, the economic chaos and the civil war belong to the
past. This documentary is looking for almost forgotten destinies of women
who ended under extreme life circumstances from Kazakhstan until Siberia
in the Soviet Gulag. It also tells the life stories of Aino Kuusinen (wife of the
leader of the Finnish communist party), the Spanish Carolina Codina (first
wife of Sergei Sergejewitsch Prokofjew) and other life destinies from Great
Britain, France and other countries.
This docudrama tells the story of the Congress of Vienna from the viewpoint
of three mistresses. Their roles produce a picture that is as enigmatic as it
is entertaining of this historically important major event, the 200th anniversary which will be marked in 2014/15.

Hardly anything in the world works without a PC
any more. Practically, everything is controlled by
computer – with networks, communication, sending and receiving all digital. Our world is an analogue world that is increasingly being dominated
by binary processes and programs. This digital

A Tiger Called Broken Tail
Testament eines Tigers
Irish Cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson spent almost 600 days filming Broken Tail & his family for
some of the finest tiger documentaries ever made. Broken Tail was the most charismatic tiger cub
he’d ever seen in Ranthambhore, one of India’s premier wild tiger reserves. Impossibly cute, he gamboled and posed for Colin’s camera through the first years of his life. But then, without warning, Broken Tail disappeared. He abandoned his sanctuary and went on the run, disappearing into the wilds
of rural India for almost a year. On a spectacular odyssey across Rajasthan, Colin travels by horseback
retracing Broken Tail’s last journey, gathering clues as to his route and behavior, exploring why he
abandoned his home, and above all: revealing important truths about India’s last wild tigers.

Islands of Eternal Spring – The Canaries

The Canary Islands are one of the most well-known
tourist destinations in the world. The “Islands
of eternal spring” offer a stable and pleasant climate throughout almost the entire year.
However, although the seven islands are “known”,
their flora and fauna secrets have yet to be presented in a “serious cinematic” fashion. Located
off of the north-west coast of Africa, these islands
are a unique archipelago. Principally, all climate
zones from desert to primeval rain forests are
found here, existent for the last 60 million years
and unique in the world. According to current estimates there are around 2,000 different species of
plants on the islands, of which more than 500

Sun-Seeking Creatures –

Sonnenkinder an der Donau –
Mediterrane Lebenswelten am großen Strom
Scorpions – Death on 8 Legs
Skorpione – Tod auf 8 Beinen
The Danube, one of the most remarkable rivers in Europe, contains many
secrets. Not just underwater, but also along its course through Austria. This
documentary follows in the tracks of the widest variety of creatures in the
Mediterranean section of the Danube. Among others, the largest lizard, the
largest snake in Central Europe, the western green lizard and the Aesculapian snake will be encountered; the audience is invited to take part in the
family life of ground squirrels, learn that the heat islands even have their
own local species of scorpion, and encounter the praying mantis, the saga
pedo or the wasp spider. However, not only the animal kingdom is fascinating. Many field orchids, which are threatened with extinction almost everywhere else, find a final refuge on the slopes of the Wachau Valley. The most
colourful European bird, the bee-eater, still broods here in the last remaining colonies. The entire region was named a World Natural and Cultural
Heritage Site in 2000.
Wherever they turn up, one thing is always the same: they are photophobic
creatures and they are poisonous. Some of them are among the most
poisonous animals on Earth. They have been on the planet for 400 million
years and have since conquered all continents, settling in the most varied
habitats, including arid areas as well as hot and humid rainforests: scorpions!
Around 1,500 different species are known worldwide. A little prick of their
needle-sharp sting is enough to kill insects, mammals and even humans.
A visually stunning documentary that shows how perfectly the oldest land
animals in the world have adapted over the course of 400 million years, full of
drama and sensational extreme close-ups.

Planet Sparrow
Planet der Spatzen
Ben is a sparrow in the Soukh in Cairo. Bushy and
tousled, he flits between crowded stalls to build
his nest and attract a mate. He’s one of five heroes of “Planet Sparrow”. Their adventures cover
the world, travelling westward with the sun from
Cairo to Vienna, Paris, New York, Beijing and
Moscow. Small and grey-brown, sparrows may
seem dull, but this first impression is deceptive.
They sing as prettily as canaries and can imitate
other birds – even machines! They’re extremely
clever, dunking dry bread and rice in water to eat,
and learning to open milk cans by watching other
birds. Their insect-hunting skills are breathtaking. The camera pursues these artists of flight
through narrow alleys, revealing their spectacular aerial manoeuvres. In Paris, centuries of living
with humans have taught them to form teams
that steal and share the food of restaurant diners.
In New York, orphaned sparrow chicks are adopted by new sparrow parents. The birds play Russian Roulette in Moscow, flying beneath the cars
on the busiest roads to save winter energy. “Planet Sparrow” is a documentary about these flying survival artists, their neighbors and adversaries, all photographed from the perspective of
the birds, as well.

Owl’s Odyssey

When a female barn-owl’s home – an old disused
barn – is demolished, she has to seek a new
place to live. On the way, flying through forests
and across grasslands, she encounters most of
the common owl species in Central Europe: long
– and short-eared owls, little, tawny and eagle
owls, some she can live peacefully beside, others
she must shun or risk becoming their prey. During her journey, the film shows how owls fly so
silently and hunt so efficiently; it illustrates what
they have meant to humans since ancient times,
and how they live beside us today. It explains
why they have become – unfairly – associated
with death. Our owl finally finds a new home, as

have given up and gained as our relationship
with dogs has changed. Different hunting dogs
are followed in real-life situations seen from dog
and human perspective. Each breed emerged
from a specific period in hunting history, when
each was supremely adapted to the tasks and
skills required. “Hunting Buddies” takes a closer
look at dog and man, nature and culture – a cinematic cross-over appealing not just to hunters
and dog-lovers but to anyone fascinated by the
history and development of humankind.

Keepers of the Ark – A Life for Animals
Leben im Zoo
The muscular young cheetah marks carefully his
new terrain which is full of another animal’s
strange smell. A couple of young falcons is excited and nervous: its first attempt at flight – and a
balcony amidst the town is an unusual take off
point. Also Nina is excited: she is the young keeper of the bats – and this is exactly the moment
to set the young animals free to find a living in
the woods around Schönbrunn castle. What these animals share is their proximity to humans in
a zoo – the world’s oldest, Vienna’s Schönbrunn
zoo: A centre for animal care, conservation and
international breeding programs. This is the story about Schönbrunn’s zookeepers who devote
their lives to the animals by witnessing birth,
aging process, death and, occasionally, the end
of an entire species. The unusual locations and
spectacular camera perspectives in this film convey the intimacy of the relationship between keepers and animals. An intimacy which may lead to
physical and behavioural similarities even between animals and humans.

The Empress and the Forest
Der wilde Wald der Kaiserin
A palace in a private woodland park near the city
of Vienna; 25 square miles of lonely beauty designed for a tragic empress. The Lainzer Park was a
gift from the Emperor to his wife Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, more than a century ago. It was
to be her sanctuary from the suffocating protocol
of court. Today, visitors are restricted to the official paths of a walled wonderland that is both
completely wild and fully protected, a landscape
untouched by the age of industry. In the midst of
the forest is a garden whose four-hundred-year
old oaks have trunks with diameters greater than
four metres. The crowns of the trees are host to
more than 1,000 insect species, including a
hundred different kinds of butterfly. In the spirit
of Thomas Rilk’s last film “Wasteland Warriors”,
set in Vienna’s building sites and scrublands, this
hidden ecosystem reveals a macro world of astonishing variety, beauty and colour in the trees
and on the ground, and follows the free-roaming
deer and wild hogs that live so close to the busy
centre of Austria’s capital city.

Danube – Europe’s Amazon
Donau – Die Lebensader Europas
Romantic river banks and unspoilt nature – these
landscapes flank the Danube River. This comprehensive cinematic portrait of Europe’s secondlongest river presents scenes of breathtaking
beauty along the banks of the Danube, and investigates the tension between humans and nature, civilisation and wilderness. Dams and power stations alternate with sections of natural
wilderness along this mighty river, which flows
through metropolises such as Vienna, Bratislava
and Budapest and untouched natural landscapes like the Danube National Park and the Kopaki Rit. Further south, between the Carpathian
mountain range in Romania and the Serbian Ore
mountains, the river passes through the socalled Iron Gate, 137 kilometres of Gorges that
are among the largest in Europe. The mighty river
ends in a unique labyrinth of water, mud and
reeds – the Danube delta. It is the last remaining
major river delta in Europe and the largest reed
bed on earth, used by huge colonies of pelicans,
cormorants, sea eagles and spoonbills for breeding and nesting.

Schladming – Magic Mountains
Schladminger Bergwelten
Part I: Land of the Chamois/Von Gipfeln und Gämsen
Sheer rock walls and deep ravines crying out to be climbed, cycling trails in
the forest and some of the swiftest and blackest ski runs; peaks and pines
eye their reflections in shimmering lakes, bordered by moss, lichen and
flower-studded slopes. These are Schladming’s Magic Mountains. Beside
the slopes this landscape is full of wild animals. Red deer, black-grouse and
pygmy owls inhabit the woods and alpine meadows. Winter is merciless
cold in these mountains, but there is one animal which is perfectly adapted
to this habitat: the chamois. Though this region is controlled by men, it is a
hot spot for wild animals – and sometimes even the wolves come back to
this territory, which once belonged to them.

Part II: Land of the Champions/
Zwischen Jahrhunderten und Hundertstelsekunden
“Sustainable development” could have been invented by this place. Schladmingers welcomed big-city money to their region to develop tourism and
peak alpine sports, but never sold out completely. As miners, they claimed
their share of Europe’s biggest silver mine – and were crushed. From then
on, as secret Protestants in a Catholic country, they learned to keep their own
counsel.

A Valley Lost in Time – Ausseerland
Mythos Ausseerland
This is the story of a landscape born on ice and
rock; the story of a valley smashed and broken,
crushed and teased, lowered – and raised again –
by nature’s elements; the story of a region, beautiful and picturesque, hailed as one of creation’s
summits. This haunt and habitat belongs to both
man and animal. Our senses are occupied by stunning summits, sheer black walls and dark blue lakes, but the sources of life are hidden deep inside
the mighty rocks: salt and water. A source of life
for both man and animal – but also a source of
exploitation, anarchy, isolation – and zest for life.
Now we enter a dense world of extremes and
contrasts: the extremes come from the climatic
conditions, cold winters with masses of snow
and mild, humid summers; while the contrasts
are based on man-made realities, powerful and
colorful traditions coupled with intellectual and
economic modernity. Like a storybook, Ausseerland is a highly compressed universe where
beautiful red deer observe the humans while
people prefer to measure each other up. Meadows are prized for flowers that anywhere else
would be thought of as rubbish, in a landscape
that attracts millions of outsiders.

Nock – Land Above the Clouds
Nockberge – Land zwischen Himmel und Erde
You might think you were in Ireland, you might
sense the vastness of Castile in Spain, but you’d
never believe this was the heart of the Austrian
Alps: the Nock Mountains are – geologically –
Austria’s oldest landscape. For a hundred million
years, the land around them has risen and fallen,
while the mountains themselves hardly moved.
And for the past thousand years, the same has
been true of the harmonious co-existence of wild
nature and rural culture. Traditional farming and,
more recently, a national park, have kept out the
mass tourism that blighted other Alpine regions.
Now, both the wide open spaces and the wealth
of small natural wonders that characterize these
gentle, green mountains have been successfully
preserved: wild rivers, endless woodland, lush
mountain meadows, wild flowers and wild animals, from red deer and golden eagles to the tiny
lives that populate the secret world of mountain
lakes. This is perfect territory for creatures shrouded in mystery: the swift, nearly invisible stone
marten, the dark and mystic raven and the inquisitive and aggressive European adder. When
mountain farmers lead their herds to the high
pastures every summer, cows and sheep graze
side by side with deer and marmots. It’s a magic
world, set in harmonious shades of green, yet always with that touch of mystery, a sense of the
infinite. But, most of all, this is a quiet world, hidden high above the clouds almost all of the year.

Triumph of the Tomato
Triumph der Tomate
The original Peruvian tomat’l – “swollen fruit” –
was yellow and the Conquistadores prized it for
its blossom. But in Europe under the Spanish sun
its lycopene went wild; rounded and red, it became irresistible. In Austria they still call it the
“paradise fruit”, and in Italy the “golden apple”.
This was surely the real forbidden fruit in the
world’s first seduction! Today’s obsession with
shape, size and long shelf-life has reduced the
once glorious tomato to mushy tastelessness.
But the counter-revolution has started! From tomato seedster Erich Stekovics with his 3,200 varieties stored in nylon stockings, to tomato tsarina Irina Zacharias, saved by the red fruit after the
fall of Communism. From the pizza that boosted
Queen Margarita’s sex life to Chinese Tomato
King Li Jingfu’s 32 new strains, cross-bred to feed
his fellow countrymen – and Joe Cocker, who serenades the crimson fruit and knows “it’s Blues
they like best”. This film squeezes inside the tomato – literally – to show how it manages to
make itself irresistible. You’ll understand why
people go crazy at tomato festivals in Spain and
Italy – and you may realize you have never, ever
tasted a real tomato – yet!

Black Mamba – Kiss of Death
Schwarze Mamba – Der Kuss des Todes
It’s spring and the start of the “Silly Season” on
the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal – when deadly
Black Mambas emerge from their winter slumber
and strike fear into the hearts of all who cross
their path. This warm, leafy coastal habitat is a
perfect Mamba country, and a huge concentration of these silent killers make their home in an
area known as “Mamba Valley”.
Mambas like warm, dark spaces – and there are
many of those in human homes. Considering a
Mamba’s bite has a 100 percent fatality rate, left
untreated, it’s not surprising humans fear and
vilify these snakes – and there’s a shoot-to-kill
bounty on their heads.
From predation to male confrontations, from mating to incubation: surveillance from the lockup
records some of the most intriguing and intimate
moments of the secret life of the Mamba. Along
the way, cinematic dramatizations of actual confrontations between people and Mambas highlight
the unpredictable and often fatal consequences of
dabbling with Africa’s most venomous snake.

Gonsalvus, the True Story of Beauty and the Beast
Die Schöne und das Biest – Die wahre Geschichte
From his birth in 1556 on Tenerife, Petrus Gonsalvus suffered from a rare condition now called
“hypertrichosis” or “Ambras syndrome”: his body,
including his face, was completely covered with
hair, leading people to believe he was a talking
ape. At the age of ten he was given as a gift to
King Henry II of France, where he soon entertained the court with his brilliant conversation and
fluent French, Italian and Latin. Court scholars
decided to test if he really was human and the
pretty daughter of a court servant was bribed
into marrying Gonsalvus. Petrus and Catherine
had several children, sadly those which inherited
their father’s rare condition were given away to
other noble courts in Europe. “Beauty, the Beast
and the Truth” – the archetypal tale of how ignorance and cruelty can only be overcome by love.
