God and Father of us all,
In Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us
your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.
Dear Father McKeaney,
On behalf of Saint Veronica’s families, I
would like to thank you for your generous
donations for Thanksgiving! Our families’
lives are bettered and they learn to trust in
the providence of God!
May Our Lady continue to shower her
graces upon you and the faithful of Saint
John Neumann Parish!
United in the IHM,
Sr. M. Incarnation
May your grace and love
help our families
in every part of the world
be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy
Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families,
especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth
and live in your love,
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Marriage, love, and Christ’s
sacrifice on the cross
God’s love is captured vividly in Ephesians
5, where Saint Paul extends the marriage
analogy to Christ and the Church. Paul urges both husbands and wives to “be subject
to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
Christian marriage is therefore not a negotiation over rights and responsibilities, but
rather a description of mutual self-giving.
Paul does write that “the husband is the
head of the wife just as Christ is the head of
the church.” Paul calls husbands to a selfgiving love that mirrors Christ’s sacrifice on
the cross. Undermining machismo and exploitation, and in profound contrast to other
household codes in the ancient world, Paul
teaches a dynamic in the image of God:
“husbands, love your wives, just as Christ
loved the church and gave himself up for
her.” Drawing on Ephesians 5, the Church
speaks of marriage as a sacrament, and
summons couples to this kind of cruciform
self-sacrificial communion.
For many today, “love” is little more than a
warm feeling or physical attraction. These
things have their place. But real love—love
that endures and deepens and satisfies the
human heart over a lifetime—grows from
what we give to others, not what we take
for ourselves. The Lord Jesus Christ died
on a cross for our salvation. That kind of
radical, liberating capacity to abandon our
prerogatives and give ourselves to others is
the thread that unites all Catholic teaching
on marriage and the family.
Authentic
Catholic teaching on marriage and the family separates true love from all counterfeits.
