FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Friends of Saint Kevin,
Our Lord and Savior, Jesus, was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary and born into a loving, caring, and holy
family. His foster father, Joseph, and his mother Mary, were both observant Jews
who deeply loved God and who strove to be faithful and obedient to all that God
asked them to do. As such, they loved and honored each other as man and wife for
the whole of their lives, lovingly raised and cared for the child, Jesus, whom God
had entrusted to their care, and brought him up by their word and example to love
God and be obedient to him.
We are fortunate in that today’s Gospel reading offers us a wonderful
example of the exemplary holiness that characterized the lives of Joseph, Mary and
Jesus together as a family. Joseph and Mary, in love and obedience to God and in
accord with the law of the Lord, took the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to
be presented and consecrated to the Lord. While they were in the temple to carry
out this custom of the law, Joseph and Mary encountered a righteous and devout man named Simeon, who was filled
with the Holy Spirit. Simeon took the child Jesus into his arms and blessed God saying, Now, Master you may let
your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in
sight of all your people Israel. Upon hearing these words, Joseph and Mary were filled with amazement and probably
could not help but wonder what the future held in store for their child, Jesus.
After they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law, Joseph and Mary took the child Jesus back to their own
town of Nazareth. There they lived in love and unity with God and one another and continued to raise and lovingly
care for him. As a result of this and God’s grace, the child Jesus, grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and
the favor of God was upon him.
Now, you may be asking yourselves: How does this way the Holy Family lived speak to the reality of our
lives today? First and foremost, the Holy Family stands as the example for Christian families to pattern their lives
upon. This means that all Christian families in the Church are called to holiness. In order to be holy, Christian
spouses, like Joseph and Mary, need to make loving God and being faithful to God the number one priority in their
lives. This lay a firm foundation for the marriage which last for the whole of life, brings husbands and wives to be
united in their love of God and one another, and helps to ensure the families they form are places where all members
are united in their love for God and for one another.
Another quality that was indispensable in enabling the Holy Family to be obedient to God and to live in love
and unity with God and one another was prayer, and the sincere practice of their Jewish faith. Similarly, the Christian
family should be a place where each member is growing in faith, where each member is loving and supporting one
another to be the best they can be, and where each member shines as a light before others. Praying together regularly
and attending Mass together needs to be a normal part of family life.
In short, by putting God first, by loving and supporting one another and by praying and attending Mass
together, families are more likely to stay together, to be holy, to shine as a light before others, and to know God’s gifts
of peace and joy in their lives.
May our Holy Family, Joseph, Mary and Jesus continue to protect us all in this New Year.
Sincerely in Christ,
Father John C. Moloney

PASTORAL PLANNING UPDATE
The self-study for our Pastoral Planning Area (PPA 330),
that includes St. Francis, St. Kevin and Holy Cross
parishes, met on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 to visit
each parish for a site survey.
In our last meeting we presented our strengths
and weaknesses. Now as a group we visit all the parish
campuses to see the condition of the parish facilities. At
our next meeting on January 7th we use all the
information gathered so far to discuss the future viability
of our parishes.
The self-study for our Pastoral Planning Area (PPA 330),
that includes St. Francis, St. Kevin and Holy Cross
parishes, met for the second time on December 3rd. The
pastor and two representatives from each parish shared
information about potential strengths and weaknesses
as they relate to the sustainability of those parishes.
Each parish provided information about their financial
status and the condition of their facilities at this time.
They also discussed how to give parishioners the
opportunity to offer responses to the self-study process.
The goal of our next meeting, January 7th, is to talk about
future possibilities for each parish in PPA 330.
It is important to keep the Pastoral Planning Process open
and transparent. In addition to the overview of ministries
within the parish, St Kevin will also provide a brief
overview of its financial status, including its current debt
status to the Pastoral Planning Committee.
For the fiscal year ended 6/30/2014, the parish had an
operating surplus of $99,537. The operating surplus was
a result of the continued generosity of the parish
community and an effort to control expenses. During the
fiscal year, the parish was able to reduce its debt to the
Archdiocese by $72,619 to $1,819.238, which included a
reduction on the loan principal for the Parish Life Center
of $36,385. Since 2012 the parish has been committed to
working with the Archdiocese to continue to substantially
reduce its debt while keeping current on all expenses.
As we continue to move forward in the Pastoral Planning
Process, we will continue to post updates in the Bulletin.
Thank you for your continued prayers & support,
Father Moloney

SAINT KEVIN PARISH NURSES
December Is Safe Toy Awareness Month
Toy Selection guidelines: Before you purchase a toy:
• Read all warnings and instructions on the box.
• Ask yourself if the toy is right for your child's ability and
age.
• Avoid purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes,
rods or dangerous edges.
• Check the lenses and frames of children's sunglasses;
many can break and cause injuries.
• Look for the letters "ASTM" this means the product meets
the national safety standards set by the American
Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
• Avoid toys that shoot or include parts that fly off.
Remember that BB guns are NOT toys.
• Do NOT give toys with small parts (including magnets
and “button” batteries which can cause serious injury or
death if ingested) to young children as they tend to put
things in their mouths, increasing the risk of choking. If
the piece can fit inside a toilet paper roll, it is not
appropriate for kids under age three.
• Do NOT give crayons and markers unless they are
labeled “ nontoxic”.
Merry Christmas!!!

PRO LIFE CORNER
The Quest for a Motherless Society (Part 3)
By Denise Hunnell, M.D.
The most dangerous health risk associated with the
process of retrieving eggs is the possibility of Ovarian HyperStimulation Syndrome (OHSS) in response to the hormone
injections. This is not an uncommon side effect and its severity can
range from moderate abdominal pain to severe respiratory
symptoms, kidney failure, and even death.
What is as significant as the health risks of egg freezing
is the shift in the parenting paradigm that accompanies all artificial
reproductive technologies including egg freezing with subsequent
IVF. Becoming a parent, whether mother or father, is supposed to
be a generous act of self-giving. When a man and a woman open
themselves to the gift of a new life through the marital act they
affirm their openness to the vocation of parenthood. They offer
themselves for the benefit of their child.
In contrast, the use of artificial reproductive technologies
like IVF allows adults to purchase a child for their own enjoyment
and benefit. The various embryos that are conceived in the lab are
sorted and examined for both positive and negative traits so that a
woman can order her child with all the right features in the same
way she orders her new car or computer. Such technology
dehumanizes children and treats them like just another commodity.
But becoming a mother is not an avocation you take up
when you have a little extra time at work. It is one of the noblest of
vocations and a privilege to be cherished. There is no level of
professional success that can compensate for a squandered
opportunity to embrace motherhood. It is an affront to authentic
feminism to suggest that maternity is a burden to be delayed as
long as possible if not avoided altogether. Fecundity does not
make women less valuable than men. Those who want to truly
empower women should stop attacking female fertility and instead
celebrate a woman’s unique ability to bring forth and nurture new
life.
