Our goal is to raise $17 million for programming, technology and sustainability to ensure that WXXI and the Little Theatre can Norm Silverstein continue to meet the needs of our community for generations to come. For the past three years, the late Larry and Jane Glazer led the “Go Public” Campaign through its silent phase. Serving as Campaign Co-Chairs, they helped us reach $13.2 million in commitments. Because of their leadership and dedication, and in recognition of all they have done, we are not replacing them as Campaign Co-Chairs. It is, and always will be, Larry and Jane’s Campaign and we will successfully finish it in their honor. In addition to keeping the Glazers memory alive as part of our “Go Public” campaign, we also named Larry and Jane our 2014 Associates of the Year at a special luncheon held the Rochester Riverside Convention Center last month. I had the honor of presenting Larry and Jane’s children, Mindy MacLaren and Ken Glazer, with the award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI’s mission of public service. To commemorate the award, a tree has also been planted in Highland Park in their memory. More than 300 attended the luncheon with special guest speaker FRONTLINE producer Michael Kirk to honor the Glazers. While their memory will also live on in our “Go Public” campaign, to accomplish our goal WXXI has enlisted the leadership of two individuals who are also very invested in the future of Rochester. WXXI Trustee Council member and former Board Chair Harry Trueheart has a long association with WXXI and is one of the station’s original members, joining in 1966. Harry is currently Chairman Emeritus of Nixon Peabody LLP. Dr. Cynthia Reddeck-LiDestri is a current member of the WXXI and Little Board of Trustees and serves as Treasurer of the Board. She is the director of Wellness Programs at LiDestri Foods, Inc. I have no doubt that Harry and Cindy will help guide the campaign to its successful conclusion. Thanks to generous donations from many local organizations and individuals, WXXI and The Little have already met more than 75% of the $17 million goal. Now, we invite citizens across the region to “Go Public” in support of their public media station and their independent community cinema. You may receive a letter in the mail and a followup phone call inviting you to support the “Go Public” Campaign in the coming months. I hope you will do what you can to help keep WXXI strong for the future. You can read more about our campaign goal and future plans on the following page of this magazine, or by visiting the campaign web page at: wxxi.org/gopublic. december’s Member Benefit National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House 17 Madison Street, Rochester NY 14608 585-235-6124 http://susanbanthonyhouse.org/ Valid for 2-for-1 admission in December On behalf of all of us at WXXI and The Little, we wish you and your family a joyful holiday season. Best regards, Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI NEWS&EVENTS Q&A with a WXXI underwriter Gardner PLUS Architects, PLLC, a small architectural consulting practice focused on a wide array of healthcare architecture, has been committed to helping Healthcare service providers create healing and welcoming environments in the community since 1990. As specialists in Healthcare design, partner and vice president Todd Martin describes the firm’s guidelines: treating both simple and complex projects as unique; handling every client with care; and addressing a client’s needs rapidly. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Gardner PLUS? We take pride in our commitment to the providers who deliver Healthcare services to the community. Having the ability to help them gives us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. There is a level of citizenship through giving back to our community in the services we provide. Q. What distinguishes Gardner PLUS from other architectural firms in the Rochester area? Gardner PLUS is a small firm and we like to think of our office staff as a second family. We make it a point to celebrate birthdays, employment anniversaries, and holidays. We foster a creative environment and even allow our employees a section on our website that gives them the ability to post their special talents, be it artwork or photographs. Q. Can you tell us about your office pet? Roxy is a sweet-hearted Golden Retriever who has a fondness for peanut M&M’s, yogurt, and ice cream. No worries though; she loves to play Frisbee and go on runs with Dave Gardner which allows her to keep her girlish figure. All kidding aside, she has a very important job; she helps us all to keep our stress levels in check. www.gardnerplus.com (L-R: Dave GarDner, Roxy, and Todd Martin) To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, contact underwriting@wxxi.org WXXI and the Little have kicked off THEIR “Go Public” campaign, iN SUPPORT OF WXXI & THE LITTLE THEATRE a $17 million campaign to raise funds needed to preserve and restore historic Little Theatre 1, support new program initiatives at WXXI and The Little, and ensure that capital and other needs are met to sustain two of Rochester’s nonprofit community gems. Thanks to the leadership of the late Larry and Jane Glazer, who remain the campaign co-chairs, and to generous donations of many local organizations and individuals, WXXI has already met more than 75% of the $17 million goal. The funds raised during the “Go Public” Campaign will be allocated into four main areas: Community Program Fund Little Theatre Capital Fund This fund will allow WXXI to invest in the acquisition and production of exceptional programming that addresses community needs; to build on existing strengths in education, news, arts, and health programming, and to act as our community’s storyteller with programming that documents where we have been and where we hope to go. This fund supports renovations to the historic Little Theatre on East Avenue, securing its future as a cultural icon and bridge to Rochester’s downtown East End Cultural District. The “Go Public” Campaign has already funded the installation of digital projectors, sound systems, and screens in all five theaters. In the birthplace of film, it is significant as well that The Little will preserve its ability to screen archival films by building a classic 35 mm reel-to-reel projector. Fund for New Media, Technology and Sustainability This fund will enable WXXI to harness the power of new media to provide programming whenever and wherever our audience demands. WXXI will further invest in new equipment and technology, allowing the station to produce and provide the highest quality programming. Finally, to best preserve the future, WXXI and Little Theatre facilities will “go green,” reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint. Future Fund The Future Fund will help ensure WXXI and The Little’s service to the community will continue in perpetuity through legacy gifts to their respective endowments and will allow both organizations to invest in strategies to develop new, sustainable sources of revenue. As the only Woman Police Constable (WPC) on the Brinford beat, Gina Dawson (Jennie Jacques) struggles to overcome sexist attitudes and gain acceptance in a maledominated police force. The Brinford force typically deals with teenage runaways, “Teddy Boys,” and petty criminals in their small city. However, the lines of the law start to blur when the hunt for a killer draws the team into a criminal underworld of shady boxing clubs, brothels, and nightclubs — all run by a ruthless gangster who is as dangerous as he is untouchable. As this situation unfolds, the unwanted attention of a senior officer pushes Gina to cross a line which could mean the end of her career. Please note that programs and times are subject to change. Mainly found in our food supply in processed foods using corn, soybeans, and sugar beets, they’re developed for various reasons -- to fight disease, enhance flavor, resist pests, improve nutrition, survive drought—and are. Across the country and around the world, communities are fighting the cultivation of genetically engineered crops. Are they safe? How do they impact the environment? Can they improve food safety? Cordancia Chamber Orchestra Thursday, December 18 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5 Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists. An encore of this broadcast will air on Sunday, December 21 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5. Host Julia Figueras invites Cordancia Chamber Orchestra to Studio A for a special Backstage Pass performance before a live studio audience, made up of WXXI sustainer members, in studio A. The orchestra will perform a collection of seasonal music and share stories about the ensemble and the music they play. Cordancia is a Rochester-based chamber music ensemble that blends eclectic, vibrant music with traditional classic repertoire. The ensemble was founded by violinist Pia Liptak and oboist Kathleen Suher who are both members of the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra; Kathleen as the principal oboist and Pia as the concertmaster. Cordancia is a versatile ensemble with an array of performance groups that span from small chamber ensembles to full chamber orchestra; from duo to 30-player sinfonietta. The ensemble works with conductor David Harman and has collaborated with a number of choirs, guest soloists and narrators. Credit: by Marc Pagano Classical 91.5 Presents In celebration of Classical 91.5’s 40th anniversary, WXXI presents a series of films with classical music connections at the Little Theatre. The series kicks off Saturday, December 6th with a double feature – The Red Violin at 1 p.m., followed by Moonrise Kingdom at 3:45 p.m. Live classical music will play in the Little Café, while a special menu is featured. Selected by our Classical music hosts Julia Figueras, Brenda Tremblay and Mona Seghatoleslami, each film chosen exemplifies the power of music in a non-traditional narrative. The film series will continue on March 14, June 13 and September 12. Tickets are $6/movie or $10 for the double feature. In Moonrise Kingdom a pair of young lovers flees their New England town, causing a local search party to fan out to find them. The film is centered on the music of Benjamin Britten. The first piece is “Noye’s Fludde,” where the children meet as audience members and performers. The second, “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” serves as a metaphor for the story: the theme, the fugue, the chaos, the final coming together in unity. Classical music hosts > (top to bottom) Julia Figueras, Mona Seghatoleslami, and Brenda Tremblay The Red Violin follows the journey of the title instrument and the impact it has on its owners, from its creation in 17th century Italy to an auction in modernday Montreal. John Corigliano won an Academy Award for the exquisite and evocative soundtrack, which features violinist Joshua Bell. TODAY’S BEST CON ARTIST It’s the film The New York Times calls “perversely satisfying” and The Daily Beast deems “Captivating - one of the largest and most unique deceptions the art world has ever seen.” On Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00 pm, The Little is proud to present Art and Craft, one of the best documentaries we’ve shown this year. Mark Landis is one of the most prolific art forgers in US history. He has passed off fake classic artwork to the Smithsonian, School of Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bostonian Society, to name a few. For 30 years, Landis has forged everything from Picassos to works by Walt Disney. But perhaps most remarkable about this story, he has never charged institutions a dime for what they perceive to be priceless works of art. Despite that fact, there is one man who doggedly pursues Landis, getting closer and closer throughout film. Art and Craft starts out as a cat-and-mouse art caper, rooted in questions of authorship and authenticity—but what emerges is an intimate story of obsession and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose. ‘Tis the season for holiday parties and Salena’s is the perfect spot!
