2015 SEASON rnzb.org.nz Don Quixote Salute the vodafone season of A Midsummer Night's Dream International Tour WELCOME TO THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLET’S SEASON—A YEAR OF GREAT STORIES. 2015 marks a new chapter in the life of New Zealand’s national ballet company, as we welcome new Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia to New Zealand. The RNZB’s performing year will begin in New Zealand, with a long overdue return to our stages of Don Quixote, first staged by Gary Harris in 2008. This is a joyful romp of a production, and one which we know will be enjoyed by all ages. Our winter programme for 2015 is Salute, a very special collaboration with the New Zealand Army Band as we pay tribute to New Zealand’s wartime history in four contemporary works, including world premieres by Neil Ieremia and Andrew Simmons, with scores by Dwayne Bloomfield and Gareth Farr. It will be an honour to work alongside some of New Zealand’s finest musicians for this programme, and we are delighted that the NZAB will be performing live in all venues on this tour. To complete our New Zealand season, an artistic coup that already has the ballet world buzzing: The Vodafone Season of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a new full length ballet by Liam Scarlett, music by Mendelssohn and designed by Tracy Grant Lord. The RNZB’s year will end in the UK, with performances in prestigious venues in England and Scotland. We would like to acknowledge the generous investment made in our work by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Te Manatū Taonga, our National Sponsor Vodafone, the Lottery World War One Commemorations, Environment and Heritage Committee, Pub Charity, The Lion Foundation and the ASB Community Trust, together with that of our many other sponsors, funders and personal supporters, including the Friends of the RNZB. Thank you all for your support of your national ballet company—we look forward to seeing you at the ballet in 2015. Francesco Ventriglia Artistic Director Amanda Skoog, MNZM Managing Director 3 DON QUIXOTE “Somewhere in La Mancha, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, a gentleman lived not long ago, one of those who has a lance and ancient shield on a shelf and keeps a skinny nag and a greyhound for racing…”* So begins Miguel de Cervantes’ epic shaggy dog story Don Quixote, which has intrigued and delighted readers for the last four hundred years—and inspired one of the greatest works in the classical ballet canon. The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Don Quixote, first seen in 2008, is a flirtatious delight, combining virtuoso choreography with comic flair in a spectacular staging that will appeal to all ages. Feisty lovers Kitri and Basilio and their friends, take centre stage in a sunny setting inspired by 1950s Barcelona. The deluded Don Quixote, who dreams of knightly adventures, blunders into the romance, almost losing his fortune and his mind in the process… but love conquers all, and the ballet ends with a sumptuous wedding. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.* The Royal New Zealand Ballet is honoured to collaborate with the New Zealand Army Band and distinguished New Zealand composers and choreographers Dwayne Bloomfield, Gareth Farr, Neil Ieremia and Andrew Simmons, in this special programme of works to mark the centenary of World War One. Alongside classic pieces by Johan Kobborg (Salute, New Zealand premiere) and Jiří Kylián (Soldiers’ Mass, last memorably performed by the RNZB in 1999), Neil Ieremia and Andrew Simmons will create two world premieres. Neil Ieremia's work is inspired by Warrant Officer Dwayne Bloomfield’s tone poem Passchendaele, premiered by the New Zealand Army Band on Anzac Day 2009. Andrew Simmons, whose haunting works for the RNZB, Through to You, A Song in the Dark and Of Days have made such an impression *Laurence Binyon For the Fallen, September 1914 on New Zealand and international audiences, will return to New Zealand to work with composer Gareth Farr (The Wedding, Smashing Sweet Vixen) on his fourth commission for the RNZB. Come our lovely Lady nigh. So good night with lullaby.”* In an unprecedented artistic coup, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is thrilled that Liam Scarlett, one of the most sought-after choreographers working today, will create his first full-length, main stage production, for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, in 2015. a string of acclaimed ballets for The Royal Ballet, and commissions for international companies have included works for New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Miami City Ballet, English National Ballet, K-Ballet (Japan) and the BalletBoyz (UK). A Midsummer Night’s Dream, based on Shakespeare’s play and with Mendelssohn’s wonderful incidental music, will have its world premiere in Wellington in August 2015. Scarlett’s musical, witty choreography, displayed in designs by Tracy Grant Lord (Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet) and lighting by Kendall Smith (Giselle) will bring Shakespeare’s enchanted wood and vivid characters, to fresh new life for New Zealand audiences. We are delighted to be returning to major venues in London, Edinburgh and Canterbury in October/ November 2015. Central to the tour will be the RNZB’s debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, home of The Royal Ballet. The company will perform a programme of works specially created for the RNZB by New Zealand and international choreographers during a week in residence at Covent Garden’s contemporary venue, the Linbury Studio Theatre. In Edinburgh the company will perform at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, and in Canterbury the RNZB will present a week of performances at the Marlowe Theatre. Repertoire for the tour will include Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg’s landmark production of Giselle, feted by audiences and critics in China and the USA since its New Zealand premiere in 2012, and a mixed programme of contemporary works, including Javier De Frutos’ The Anatomy of a Passing Cloud (2013) and newly created works from Salute. Dates for all centres are marked in the performance listings on pages 20–22. Distance is no barrier to participation in RNZB education. RNZB educators work with primary and secondary schools throughout New Zealand, offering tailor-made curriculumlinked workshops exploring choreography and artistic themes from current RNZB productions. Comprehensive resources, with DVD, are available for NCEA Dance Levels 1, 2 and 3, as well as free downloadable teacher’s classroom resources (great for audience members too!) for each production. Discounted tickets for RNZB performances are available for school groups. Aspiring dancers throughout New Zealand have the opportunity to enhance their regular dance lessons through open classes conducted by RNZB artistic staff, guest teachers and company members. Special Ballet for Boys classes give male dance students the chance to work alongside other male dancers—a rare opportunity in New Zealand. Dedicated students may also apply to be a part of the RNZB’s nationwide mentor programme, which pairs students with company members for regular advice and support via email and a special day behind the scenes at the RNZB in Wellington. Keep an eye out for special events— a chance to see dancers, costumes and backstage secrets, in venues outside the RNZB’s regular touring programme. Pre-season forums for Don Quixote, Salute and The Vodafone Season of A Midsummer Night’s Dream are planned for 2015. Look out for dates and details on rnzb.org.nz, in the RNZB’s monthly e-newsletter and on the RNZB’s Facebook page. As a new initiative for 2015, the RNZB will offer a professional development programme for dance teachers, including the opportunity to observe company class, attend an informal lecture and discuss best practice with members of the RNZB’s artistic staff. More information about the RNZB’s education programme, including dates for events and online booking for open classes, can be found at rnzb.org.nz/education—and you can also sign up for education e-newsletters to ensure that you or your students never miss out. Reminders about booking for open classes, Warm Up, Curtain Up! and Q&A sessions are also posted on the RNZB’s Facebook page. For all education enquiries, please contact RNZB Education Manager Pascale Parenteau, education@rnzb.org.nz / 04 381 9001. The RNZB gratefully acknowledges support from the Les and Sonia Andrews Cultural Foundation for work in primary and secondary schools around New Zealand.
