JOHN3 STEWART (JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born Jun 20, 1640 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, and died 1720 in Glasgow, Scotland. He married JANET MCGILCHRIST Abt. 1659 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. She was born 1632 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, and died Abt. 1690 in Woodbridge, Monmouth Co., NJ. Notes for JOHN STEWART: http://mywebpage.netscape.com/rjviator/Stewart%20Migrations.htm Stewart Migrations from Scotland to America Source: " The History of The Stewart Family", by Bucher Ayers (1876) Transcribed by Vincent Summers John Stewart, born (1630/1640) of Glasgow, Scotland was a Presbyterian Covenanter who would not comply with the Royal order forcing attendance at the newly established Episcopacy Church in Scotland by Charles II in May 1661. As a result, he incurred heavy penalties which impelled him to flee to Ireland. The Stewarts flourished as agriculturist, framers, and freeholders in Scotland, Ireland , and America; so, it is probably safe to assume John was of the same category. John and family stayed in Ireland until 1685 when he returned to Scotland with his family where he died in 1720. John had one known son, Robert Stewart born 1665, Glasgow, Scotland. Robert, son of John, must have been a newly born infant when his family fled to Ireland as he was born in the same year they fled. Robert returned to Scotland in 1685 with his father and remained there until his father's death in 1720. He then returned to Ireland, County Down, where he died in 1730 at age 65. It is believed that Robert had a large family, but we have record of only three children. 1) Samuel Stewart, born 1698, Glasgow, Scotland 2) Robert Stewart Jr., born 3) Hugh Stewart, born 11 June 1719, Glasgow, Scotland Samuel, eldest son of Robert., migrated from Ireland to America in 1735 accompanied by his wife, two sons, and younger brother, Hugh. Why Samuel emigrated to America is unsure. It could have possibly been because the landlords were unwilling to renew leases on old terms. Or, maybe it was just a desire for religious liberty and material interest. The voyage across the ocean in 1735 was perilous and inconvenient. Vessels were small and over crowded, ill ventilated, slow, poorly equipped, and ill fitted for the voyage. The emigrant Stewarts landed at Philadelphia and settled at Chestnut Level, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the spring of 1735. The family had one dollar and twenty five cents in their pockets. Samuel spent the 3 money for a jack knife to cut threads necessary to the business of weaving. This occupation he previously learned in Ireland. The journey from Philadelphia to Lancaster County was done by pack horse. The road to Lancaster County (King's Highway) was a winding road through forest, marshes, and unbridged streams. The progress was slow and difficult. They stopped and remained at Chestnut Level, Octoraro Region, Lancaster County which was the metropolis of a Scotch-Irish settlement and the seat of the Presbyterian Church. Samuel Stewart was tall in person, large and well made. He had a large Roman nose, eyes of blueish-grey, and lively deep brown hair, with a Scotch complexion. Samuel married in Ireland to Mary McClay who was remarkable for her dark complexion and large size weighing 200 pounds. Samuel and Mary had twelve sons and one daughter. Two were born in Ireland and the rest in Lancaster County. It is believed that Hugh Stewart husband of Susanna Wilson was the seventh child of Samuel and Mary McClay. The above mentioned source record shows Hugh son of Samuel & Mary "settled in Lexington, Kentucky at a very early day and his descendants settled in Indiana". (To review Hugh Stewart file go BACK to Stewart homepage.) Robert Stewart, brother of Samuel, sailed from Belfast with his family, but was driven back by weather. After three different unsuccessful attempts, he abandoned his design to emigrate. We have no further account of Robert. Hugh, younger brother of Samuel, later moved to Paxtang Township sometime before 1750. Hugh married twice. First, 1750/1751 to Hanna Dallas. They had four children. After the death of Hannah, Hugh remarried in 1764 Nancy Moore. They had five children. The descendants of Hugh settled in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. another acct lists burial/death in Down co., Ireland A Scotch coventer of the 17th century, fled from Scotland toCounty Down, Ireland, 1665 to 1865, to escape panalties incurredfor non-compliance with Royal edicts respecting religiousworship and attendance at the Parish Church. The North of Ireland had become a refuge for proscribedprotastants and condemned covenanters, and thither he went, preferring to abandon his native hills rather than go back onthe solemn league entered into by the Scotish people in 1643. [Harding.ftw] John Stewart, a Scottish covenanter of the seventeenth century, fled from Scotland to the vicinity of Belfast, Ireland, where he remained for twenty years. Tradition relates that he had incurred penalties for non-compliance with royal edicts respectiong religious worship and for not attending the parish church. John Stewart returned his family to Scotland after the establishment of freedom of conscience by the revolution of 1688. He died in Scottland in 1720. Upon the death of his father in 1720, he moved to Ireland, in Drumore Township, County Down, twelve miles from Belfast. The people of this county, as a whole, are of Scottish origin, and the Ayrshire dialect was commonly spoken. This county is remarkable for its inequality of surface and number of hills, from which its name originated. The lives of father and son, John and Robert Stewart , therefore, embraced that most remarkable period in the history of England commencing in the reign of Charles I , through the Commonwealth under Cromwell, Charles II , James II , William and Mary , Queen Anne , George I , and into the reign of George II . SAMUEL6 STEWART (SAMUEL5, ROBERT4, JOHN3, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1734 in County Down, Ireland, and died Sep 16, 1803 in Lancaster, Hanover Co., PA. He married NANCY TEMPLETON 1769 in Lancaster Co., PA. Notes for SAMUEL STEWART: Samuel Stewart ,4 (Samuel ,3 Robert ,2 John ,1) b. in the county Down, Ireland ; was brought to Pennsylvania in the emigration of his father's family, in 1735 , and, on coming of age settled as a farmer in Hanover township, Lancaster county , now West Hanover, Dauphin county, Pa. , about 1750 . His warrant for one hundred acres of land was dated May 17, 1754, and, in an "assessment for the King's use, 1759 , Samuel Stuart " is taxed five shillings. This township, established in 1737 , and named in honor of the reigning family of Great Britain, almost exclusively settled by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, was on the then frontier and contiguous to the Kittatinny mountains. From the date of his settlement therein, in 1750 , until 1764, on account of its proximity to the wilderness, it was subject to Indian raids and depredations from which the inhabitants suffered fearfully in their persons and property, often being compelled to abandon their homes and fly for safety. This state of affairs continued until the massacre in Lancaster of the Conestoga Indians, who were the aiders and abettors of these outrages. A public meeting of the citizens of Hanover township , June 4, 1774 , has gone into history, showing the earliest recorded movement towards independence, and, when the Revolutionary war began, the liberty loving and patriotic Scotch-Irish of Hanover were found faithful and active participants. Samuel Stewart entered as a private, serving in Col. Timothy Green 's battalion for the defence of the frontier, and, in June 6, 1776 , in Capt. James Rodgers ' company of Lancaster county associators, "destined for the camp in the Jerseys ." On the erection and organization of 17 the county of Dauphin , in 1785 , we find him upon the first grand jury, composed of prominent citizens. A Presbyterian by birth and a supporter of the old Hanover church, founded in 1735 , and situated eleven miles east of Harrisburg , the records show that on "November 2, 1788 , Samuel Stewart and Nancy Stewart , his wife, were admitted to the Lord's table." Samuel Stewart d. September 16, 1803 , and was buried in Hanover church graveyard. He was a large man, weighing two hundred and thirty pounds, six feet in height, eyes blue and complexion fair. His surviving wife, Agnes Calhoun , and his son, Samuel Elder Stewart , were the executors named in his will. He m., first, Nancy Templeton, daughter of Robert and Agnes Templeton , of Hanover ; d. 1788 , and buried in old Hanover church graveyard. They had issue, all born in Hanover township : -------See "Samuel Stewart" page 422 in Decennial Register of S.A.R. Penna. Society of 1888 to 1898. I will advise you if I find out more about the one picture of Joseph and his horse and buggy. As I mention in my note I recently came in touch with one of the granddaughters of Joseph and sent the picture to her to see if she can tell me more. Also to see if she has any other pictures. The pictures were in my father's papers. When he was a youngster he lived with Joseph and Nancy a great deal of the time, and I gathered he felt like they helped raise him and he was very close to them. His name was Charles Edwin Robinson and he died in 1976. He went to Kansas State and got a degree in veterinary medicine, and subsequently had a carrier in that service in the army and then the air force. His mother Dothal worked as a waitress most of her life .Several of the other sisters worked the same for various time in their lives. Zolllie was a cook as was my grandfather Robinson. They worked in Kansas, Missouri and also the Chicago area. I gather my dad stayed with Joseph and Nancy when the parents were working elsewhere as that was during the depression. He married (3) NANCY ANN THOMAS Oct 19, 1879 in Ellis Co., TX, daughter of ISAAC THOMAS and ELIZA CRUBAUGH. Notes for JAMES FRANKLIN STEWART: From Roy Viator http://mywebpage.netscape.com/rjviator/stewart.htm James Franklin Stewart was born in Rush Co., Indiana in 1839. He was the son of Franklin G. Stewart and Mathilda. In 1860 he married Hester Manlove d/o George Manlove and Sarah. She unfortunately died without child in 1861 at age 16. James then decided to join the Civil War. On 28 March 1862, he joined Captain Mofitt's Company "F" of the Third Indiana Calvary. In 1863 while on 51 duty as a picket, he receivd a chest injury which caused him to suffer with a cough and bleeding rendering him unfit for further duty. He received a disability discharge on 24 March 1863. After discharge, he returned home to his family who had since moved to Fayette Co., Indiana. By 1864, James had moved to Illinois. Being a farmer by trade, he soon acquired some land and remarried 18 Sep. 1864 Hattie A. Winterrowd d/o Washington Winterrowd and Adeline in Effingham, Illinois. James apparently still suffered from his chest injury. In the fall of 1873, James and family moved to Ellis Co., Texas where he could find a more favorable climate. He probably traveled with his father-in-law Washington Winterrowd. James and Hattie had four children. Hattie died 1878 in Ellis Co., Texas leaving James with four children to raise. James soon remarried for the third time Nancy Ann Thomas d/o Issac Thomas and Eliza Crubaugh on 19 Oct. 1879, Ellis Co., Texas. James and Nancy had five children one of which is my grandfather. James died 3 Apr. 1899, Clebourn, Texas. My connection to James Franklin Stewart: Ray Viator s/o Eva Stewart d/o Roy Stewart s/o James Franklin Stewart. Notes for ROMIE WILBUR STEWART: From Trudi's records: Romie worked on the Ford assembly line for many years and suffered a double hernia from lifting heavy car bodies. When he returned to work, Ford refused to put him on easier work, and he was ruptured again. Incredibly, the same thing happened yet another time, and Ford let him go. He had a total of three surgeries. These days, something like that would be lawsuit heaven, but those times were grim and people were desperate for work. He died in Kansas City, MO but was buried in Manhattan, KS. Trudi notes: There is much that is poignant in going through the things from the past. I see so much of Paul in Romie's pictures, and I wish I could have known him. From the cards and letters, I think Romie had a deep love for his son--and his daughter--and tried to do the very best he could. She also believes that Romie was his given name for that is the only name that appears on all his papers. He signed business papers as R. W. Stewart. She remembers Paul telling her that people would call him Romeo and he hated it. I thot when you come in on your vacation you could take her up to that lake a few days, come back here and sleep if you wanted. I think that would please her about as well as going to Ill. and be cheaper for you. [Mom would have been 15.) 12/27/1946: Cocoa, FL: We are spending night here. Saw lovely marina gardens & fisheries on way here. We have to be in Miami tomorow. This is a great orange country and as girls are sending oranges, I will send you some too, so look out for them. 12/29/1952 newspaper article. Notes for MABEL LOUISE STEWART: How mom came to live with Aunt Ottie and Uncle Frank who raised her from the time she was about 1 yr. old: Apparently Grandma had called Uncle Frank (her brother) and he had gone out to KS and brought Nell and mom back home with him. Marsha thought that Romie had taken Paul and left with him. Dad thought perhaps they had just decided he would stay with his dad. Apparently when they came back Grandma decided to leave mom with her brother and his wife to allow them to raise her. Perhaps their financial situation looked better than hers and they had no children of their own. By 1928 (mom was about 1 yr. old) 67 Grandma was working as a Tuberculosis Nurse, Xmas Seal Committee, Fremont, OH where she stayed for the next 3 years. In an undated but obviously early note to her mother, mom writes: Dear Mother: Uncle Billie was to take us to a picture show but it rained. Aunt Effie and I have our room fixed up. Aunt Ottie is canning the plums. There are some people tuning the piano. I hope you will come soon. With love. Good bye. Mabel. In one dated 12/29/1933 (Mom is age 7 and her mother was working in the Tuberculosis Clinic in Cleveland, OH): Dear Mother: I was sorry you did not get home for Christmas. I had a good Christmas. I hope you had a good Christmas at the hospital. I had a nice Christmas tree with a Santa Claus in the top. I got a doll from Santa Claus, with a blue dress and a blue ribbon on its curly hair and I got a doll from brother Paul with rubber legs and arms when you pinch her legs she crys and she can shut and roll her eyes and says momma. She has golden hair and her dress is blue. I am enclosing some of the stationary for you to write to me. Good bye. Mabel. He is still very ill. She said school will ____ him with honors. Said I was glad off his mind as he worried about it. Hope this finds all well. Love, Nell. From a postcard dated 7/21/1940 from mom's father, Romie Stewart, from KS City, MO to her at Frank Notestine's house in Quincy, OH: Dear Mable [even though her name is Mabel]: Just a line to let you know Paul was up to Manhattan two weeks. Sorry you did not get to see me last summer. As Paul could of spent his vacation with you last year as well as this. I would love to have you & Paul to be together. I guess it (is) impossible until your mother changes her ways. I was down to Detroit a few weeks ago. Your a fine look(ing) young lady. Your brother is a fine boy. We may not be in R.I(?) very long. Love, Daddy. From another birthday card for a young girl, no date: Dear Mabel, I am sorry that I can not send you a more appreciatable present. But I will send you a birthday present later. Tell Aunt Ottie and Uncle Frank hello. I am sorry for sending this late. Wishing a merry birthday, a happy birthday. I will close. Love, Paul and Daddy. He joined the army and got stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL about 10 miles from Champaign. Agnes got a job in the local Piggly Wiggly where dad worked. She gave him Mom's address and they started writing on August 1, 1944 (Mom was 17 and had 68 just graduated from high school). Dad joined the Navy on May 9, 1944 and they continued to write while he was over there. He was stationed aboard the SS Santa Monica, a merchant marine ship, and it was visiting Philidelphia. In 1945 he took a train to meet mom who was attending OH State University. The day dad he arrived she had flunked out and her mother had come to pick her up. Dad went back with them to Dayton and spent several days with them. Years later when they were married and living in Dayton, OH, they ran into Agnes. Her first husband had been killed in WWII (shortly after she told Mom to write Dad) and she had remarried and was living a few blocks away from them. Grandma worked off and on. During war years she worked in an ammunition factory. When Pearl Harbor came grandpa went to work at Chanute Field as barber where he could make more money. Came home to his barber shop in Mahomet on weekends and nights. When war ended they moved back to Champaign. Dad was in about 7th grade when they moved to Mahomet. He'd been attending a Junior High School in Champaign before they moved but in Mahomet he was in a combined 6, 7, 8th grade class and the principal was their teacher. He liked living there as that was the first place he learned to fish and hunt and swim. They would fish in the Sangamon River. Sometimes a corner of a field would flood and they would wade in waist deep with a pitchfork and catch some carp. He also did some camping there. There was an old gentleman in town who taught him to play checkers and he did that a lot. He was about 13 and enjoyed it there. He made a few friends but also kept to himself quite a bit. He said there were free movies in towns on the weekends. They would put up a screen on the main street. There were lots of fairs and fall festivals. Grandma and Grandpa liked fairs--livestock, etc. and sometimes they'd go for a couple of days. While Dad liked it, Peg didn't like living there at all. She was about 9. She said they lived in a large brick building downtown and Grandpa's barber shop was in the front and they lived in the back in a big room that wasn't divided up at all so there was little privacy. At some point Grandma went off during the week to work and the kids would be left with Grandpa. Times were tough and food not plentiful as Grandpa only got 20 cents for a hair cut. They had no money for toys and they could jump rope or play jacks. They had to line their shoes with newspaper. She remembers she and Don had to wash all of the barber towels which were full of 69 shaving soap and hair and she really didn't like that. Peg remembers that Don and Richard hung around together a lot. Uncle Al and Joe joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. When the War started Joe was already in the National Guard and both of them tried to sign up but Al couldn't pass the physical. Dad left school after his junior year and then joined the navy a year later. Joe fought at the invasion of Guadacanal as a reconnaisance scout and was wounded by a Japanese sniper. He was with Company B, 132 Infantry for IL. He spent time in a hospital in New Zealand where he met his future wife. Dad's merchant ship was based out of New Orleans, LA, SS Santa Monica (ship registered out of Panama). It would run in and out of New Orleans, bringing cargo from South America and the Carribean back to New Orleans. He was part of the navy armed guard crew to protect the civilian merchant ship and served as a signalman. He went on trips to Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, Trinidad, Dutch Guyana, all over South America. Transferred to the Pacific. Went from San Diego to Hawaii, Johnson Island, Guam, and China aboard the Carrier Antietam and the Battle Cruiser Alaska (one of two, Hawaii and Alaska), then went on a sub chaser USS SC(C) 1349 in Shang Hai, during WWII. Was going to invade Japan from Guam but they dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the war ended. He got off in Guam and flew back to the states and he was discharged. Only in the navy 2 years, a month and a day, 5/9/44-6/10/46. Service #7534259. Came back and went to school at University of IL. Said he had passed the college entrance exam as a freshman in high school and they let him in. Got credit for military service. Jan. 28, 1945 - USS Antietam (CV 36) commissioned, Capt. James R. Tague in command. The ship was laid down on 15 Mar. 1943 by the Philadelphia Navy Yard and launched on 20 August. ______________________ From a genealogy questionnaire I asked Dad to fill out: Dad's nickname as a child: Cotton Top (blond hair) The oldest person he can remember is his dad's dad. I remember them coming to visit me in the hospital. I was glad that Dad seemed happy again and had a companion. On Martha's spring break from teaching in the early years they would go to FL and visit her parents who were living in a retirement home in DeLand. On their summer breaks they would go out West and visit Martha's daughter, Debby and her family. Dad loved to go to Jackson Hole, WY. When Debby's husband got transferred to an AFB in MI, they found a cottage up there and they would go stay for a week or so and visit Debby and go fishing. Dad started bowling again with his bowling friends from when I was a child. They would play Uno and other card games with a friend or Martha's and/or their bowling friends. Dad and Martha would always have Thanksgiving dinner. Debby came at least one time over the years. Jeff was maybe about 10 and I remember him jumping up to carry the dishes out to the kitchen while everyone sat around and talked. We'd go to their house at Christmas and go to their church for Xmas Eve services. Martha's cousin was a minister in town and sometimes he and his daughters would come over for dinner. Martha liked to start topical conversations around the dinner table (or at least until Mark came along and gave her a run for her money). In the end we thought she just thought she wanted people to discuss a topic. What she really wanted was for you to agree with her. 71 After Martha died, dad made friends with the lady who lived next door to them in Springfield (Mary) and the widower across the street. They would go out 4 times a year for their birthdays. We all thought the big old house he and Martha had lived in was way too big for him living there all alone. But, after he sold this house, he never rented an apt. or house any where again until he came to Cleveland 4 months before he died. He would spend the summers in that cabin in MI. Sometimes he would go out west. In the last couple of years he would go stay in a cheap motel in SC or somewhere. He lived in a motel in Dayton the last year of his life until he found out he had lung cancer when he came to Cleveland. We got his pictures and stuff out of storage. He enjoyed seeing his art work around his apartment again. Also even just seeing his old pots and pans, etc. that he hadn't used for years. It was too bad he didn't settle down here much sooner. He was in a perfect little place in Lakewood, near restaurants, a barber shop, bank, grocery store, a few blocks from the lake where he could have gone fishing off a pier. It makes me sad I couldn't convince him to do this sooner. ____________________ NOTES FROM DAD: ____________________ 10/29/2001: Dear Sue and Marsh: I have already lived longer than I ever thought I would. Please don't feel too sad when I pass away. I want a simple funeral. I am eligible for Veteran's benefits--whatever that is. I would like to have Martha moved and be buried next to her if possible. Otherwise, cremate me and spread my ashes over Kiser Lake. No heroic measures to prolong my life! .... My love to you and Marsh. Had a cat scan today--get the results on Wed. Will let you know. Not sure what to do--did you check prices, etc. on apartments? Would like to go south but depends on what I find out. I'm not very upset--know we don't get out of life alive and my life hasn't been all that bad. -----------------------------------------Idle thoughts on 11/25/01: Sue--You told me once when Martha was in the hospital that I was a good husband. Second or 3rd tumor starting in shoulder. Hurts. No sleep since yesterday. 12:30 pm Hope I can last til Sue gets home before going to a hospice or hospital. Not sure I can. 2/7/02 12:45 pm Back pain right side; 2/3 down back; left shoulder pain. Nauseous. (I called on 2/8 but he said nothing.) 2/9/02 9:00 pm Bad day. Feel weak and nauseous. Bad tummy pain when laying down. ---------------------------------------------------------**We returned from vacation late on 2/12 and I called him on 2/13. He wasn't feeling well and we went into the Dr. and they admitted him to the hospital. On 2/25 he was discharged and Jeff and Jill were in town and we took him back to his apartment. We went to run some errands and get him dinner. Returned about 7. He had gotten trapped in the bathroom and was waiting for us. Very sad. He'd written this note even before he'd gone in: Dear Sue: Sorry, this isn't going to work. Can hardly get up from chair. Need to go to hospice ASAP. My love to you all. Dad. PS. At least we tried. No regrets please! No heroics please. My last words. Thanks to you and Mark. My last thoughts are of you, Mark, Marsh, Jeff, Jill and especially Martha whom I shall join soon I hope. Remember I'm at peace. Dad ***************** Dad stayed in the hospital until 3/1. Cleveland Clinic wouldn't allow him to stay any longer and we got him into a nursing home. He was admitted that Fri. Marsha came up on Sat. and we went to visit him. He was in much pain. They apparently weren't giving him morphine in addition to this percocet. After many discussions with the nurse, etc. it was straightened out, but not until the end of the day. He could hardly speak. Just held his head in his hands. When we returned on Sun. he could barely be aroused. Got him to drink a few sips of good coffee that he had asked for the day before and a tiny piece of a cinnamon roll. He was somewhat irrational. Couldn't get him to sit up--too painful. Finally left. They called a few hours later and said if we wanted to be there we might want to come back as they thought he was taking a turn for the worse. His temperature was dropping, etc. Returned. Seemed uncomfortable. Thrashing about. They 73 cleaned him up and he seemed calmer. An aide told me that a few hours before he'd gotten out of bed and she took him to the bathroom and he was calling for me. Since we had tried to just get him to sit up a few hours before that it seemed impossible, but others have told me that people sometimes do incredible things before they die. They got him some more pain medicine and he seemed more comfortable. Within a half hour he took a couple of deep breaths and then no more. At least he's not in pain any longer. May he rest in peace. -------------------Separation from U.S. Naval Service Serial #753-42-59 Signal Man 3c V6 USNR 310 E. Please give him my love and tell him I will be thinking of him and he will be in my prayers. You should tell him also that when I was going through all Mom and Dad's things when Mom passed away, Geoff and I couldn't help but laugh as there were so many photos of Uncle Bob in his Navy uniform with Dad, and on his own. They must have gone mad with the camera one day. I will always remember our weekends that we spent with your family in OH when I was young. -------------Name: Robert K. But if you step through the double front doors of Susan and Mark Muglich's home expecting a center hall colonial, you will be disappointed. The 1994 house is actually a spacious, sunny ranch with vaulted ceilings and a soft color scheme that feels larger than its 2,300 square feet. That window high up in one of the front gables? It's a fake. The tiled foyer, with a closet and half-bath on one side and formal dining room on the other, opens to a 15by-20-foot great room. The dining room is visually separated by two sets of columns and an off-white border in the sand-colored wall-to-wall carpet. The great room and kitchen "share" a vaulted ceiling - the wall between the two spaces does not extend to the peak. This way, light from rows of windows and a pair of rectangular skylights illuminates both rooms. A high breakfast bar separates the kitchen from a sitting area - called a "hearth room" in the house plans that shares a corner fireplace with the great room. The hearth room, carpeted in sturdy off-white Berber, offers a wet bar with glass-front cabinets. The kitchen features simple white cabinets with shiny brass fixtures, a double, off-white porcelain sink, and a Dacor smooth-surface cooktop with an automatic vent that appears at the touch of a button. Beside a wall oven and microwave is a pantry with deep shelves. In addition to the breakfast bar, the kitchen-hearth room offers a dining area set at one end, with sliding glass doors to a small concrete porch and beyond it, a professionally installed flagstone patio in a beautifully landscaped, shady back yard. Many rooms in the house, including the hearth room, are based on a color scheme of soft peach, beige and off-white. From one corner of the kitchen, a hallway snakes past two bedrooms. Neither is particularly big, which is how the owners wanted it. "We like a house that's big in the parts that we use the most," Susan Muglich said. "And it's plenty spacious when you need the room." The couple uses the smaller of the two bedrooms (10 by 14 feet) as an office. There's a full bathroom at the end of the hall, past a pocket door hiding the laundry room and access to the garage. The master bedroom is located at the other "end" of the house, through double doors topped by an interior transom, just past the point where the foyer's white tile meets the great room carpet. The bedroom where a soaring ceiling makes the space feel larger than its 15 feet by 22 feet - includes a sitting area at one end with double French doors to a second porch. A pocket door separates the master bathroom, where his-and-hers walk-in closets are set on the wall 83 opposite a long vanity with double sinks. At one end of the room, a deep whirlpool tub is set beneath a big glass block window and alongside a wall of the same glass block. On the other side, a large shower stall also benefits from the natural light. The house is loaded with extras, including more than $4,000 in light fixtures, most in a sleek, glass-andbrass or chrome style. The yard is outfitted with a sprinkler system and the house with a security system and intercom. And don't assume the Mugliches are leaving this ranch with its deceiving facade for another single-story abode. The couple is trading this for a three-level townhouse elsewhere in Greater Cleveland. We stayed at the Buccaneer Inn and got married in an old sugar mill ruin on the property. Our flight was delayed and our plan re-routed to Puerto Rico. By the time we landed in St. Croix it was very late, the rental car office was closed, and then we discovered we had no luggage. I had carried my wedding dress but left my ring in my luggage because I didn't want to wear it. Our luggage stayed on the plane and went to Miami. Was rerouted back the next day, minus my ring. So we were married without my wedding ring. The room we had for our wedding night 84 was wonderful, a huge portico overlooking the sea. We had a wonderful time and it is definitely a memory to treasure. She was exactly one month old. They had been up for a visit Labor Day so I had seen her 10 days before. She was a sweet, very quiet baby. Marsha had put her and Matt down for a nap. She laid down as well. When she awoke she went to check on her and she was dead. My dad called and he said that baby Krissie was dead. I couldn't imagine what he was talking about. I tried to think of cousins named Chris. Couldn't believe it could be Krista. It was a terrible time. One of the saddest moments I've ever experienced. Marsha and I went to find a dress for her to be buried in. Clerks would ask how old she was. It was all dreadful. They had an open casket but she didn't look like herself at all. I had an awful time leaving--I didn't want them to close the casket. I felt like as long as it was open there might be a chance or something. Marsha was very strong through it all. She did better than I did. Her middle name came from our grandmother, Nell Fay. iii. NICHOLAS RYAN TATUM, b. Jan 13, 1983, Dayton, OH. 86
