Indian Summer is
usually a warm spell in
the fall, after the first
frost, when summer
seems to return, if only to
take a bow and then vanish until June. This year,
instead of Indian Summer we had 13 inches of
snow for Thanksgiving.
Like many New Hampshire residents, we lost
power, but I did get in
some early snowshoeing.
For Christmas, however,
we had warm temperatures and lots of rain.
The weather seemed to
be going in reverse, and
I went from snowshoes
back to riding a bike.
The weather improved for the last week
in December and was
mostly sunny with mild
temperatures, gradually
getting colder as the end
of the year approached. On the last Monday of the
year, I rode my mountain bike north on Route 202,
and then on the Old Rail Trail along the Contoocook
River toward Hancock. The sun was out; the sky

was mostly clear and blue; and it seemed more like
late October than late December. I stopped near the
EMS building to take a photo of the road and the
completely clear fields next it. Not a trace of snow
or ice was in sight.
I passed the pond that can be seen on both sides
of the highway not far beyond EMS, and there was
no sign of ice. The geese and herons were long gone,
but I wouldn’t have been surprised to see one or the
other swimming on the open water.
From the highway, I turned onto the road to the
recycling center and then pedaled on the Old Rail
Trail. The first few yards were clear of snow and ice,
but I soon came to white patches covering the center
portions of the trail. There was some snow to be seen
in the woods along the trail, too. There certainly
wasn’t enough snow for snowmobiles, but I did see
several dog walkers as I rode along the river, which
was running ice free.
I had to stop and walk the bike over a couple
of icy stretches, but for most of the half mile or so I
traveled on the trail I pedaled. I stopped to look over
the Contoocook for a while, and then I turned back
toward home.
Although it was a sunny and mild day, I did notice
the temperature was a bit lower than the day before,

and the forecast was for colder still as New Year’s
Eve approached. I’m sure the next time I get to the
Old Rail Trail it will be on skis or snowshoes, and this
Indian Autumn will be only a memory.
