Thus says the Lord: All you who are thirsty, come to the water!...Come to me heedfully; listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant. (Isaiah 55:1,3) Come to the water! What a beautiful invitation we receive from Christ Himself again at His baptism by John in the Jordan. Water: that which cleanses us; that which sustains life. We most fittingly begin every new year, with a liturgy honoring Mary, the Mother of God. We renew ourselves, model ourselves after Mary, who gave herself completely to God. Then we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany. The three Wise Men followed a star on their very difficult journey, encountering many trials. But they persevered, remained focused, and they were rewarded. They entered Bethlehem to find our Savior, Jesus Christ, cradled in the arms of His mother, Mary. Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We Christians find our Savior by entering the water of Baptism. Christ calls us to the water. He goes into the water before us to lead us, to guide us, to reveal the image of God His Father. As Jesus came out of the water, the heavens opened “and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice...saying ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’” (Matthew 3:16-17). Jesus, a member of the Holy Trinity, was there in the beginning. Today He is still with us. As we now continue our journey through the liturgical year, in Ordinary time, we see Christ’s ordinary life, witness His ordinary miracles. He is always showing us the way. Christ leads us into the desert, shows us what to do in times of temptation. We must remain focused on Christ and we will be rewarded. Christ: yesterday, today and forever! Father Storey My gratitude is boundless the list of blessings, prayers, gifts and good wishes you have given is endless! At Christmas we rejoice in God’s gift of His Son! At Christmas I have been gifted in so many ways by you! You, good people of Holy Spirit, show the Spirit of Christmas all year long! Your support, encouragement and prayers made the celebration of my 60th anniversary with Pope Francis possible. You will be in my frequent celebration of the Eucharist (Thanksgiving) in the year ahead! Father Tony Lickteig Thank you to all the church decorators, musicians, sacristans, lectors, ushers, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, and altar servers who stepped forward to volunteer for the Christmas and New Year's Masses. We are blessed to have you at Holy Spirit! Your parish appreciates you! Holy Spirit Parish needs Ushers! With almost 5,000 people attending Mass at Holy Spirit each weekend, we could use more Ushers. Our needs are particularly pressing for the 4:00 pm Saturday and 10:30 am Sunday Masses. Duties include greeting and seating the congregation, taking up the collection, and distributing the weekly Bulletin. Men and women (this is not a guys-only ministry), high school age and up, who are interested should contact Dan Rohde 913-469-5669 or dan_rohde@hotmail.com for more information. The Baptism of the Lord The Baptism of the Lord January 11, 2015 First Reading, Isaiah 55:1-11 (21B), In the first reading, the prophet describes the character of someone who serves the Lord. School of Religion Transmitting the Faith It is through Baptism that the gift of faith is first transmitted. For parents, this is the greatest gift you can give your child. The baptism of a child begins a journey between parents and child. As they gave their child physical life, parents then transmit the faith to their children. Pope Francis has spoken of this frequently, and last month he even had a prayer intention for parents as the first evangelizers of their children. May all parents be encouraged by Pope Francis to hand on the faith to their children. “Jesus had no need to be baptized, but the first theologians say that in His Baptism, with His body and His divinity He blessed all the waters, so that the waters would have the power to give Baptism. And then, before ascending to Heaven, Jesus told us to go out to the whole world to baptize. And from that day until today, this has been an uninterrupted chain: children were baptized, and then their children, and then these children’s children. And today also, this chain continues. These children are a link in the chain. You, parents, have a baby boy or a baby girl to be baptized, but in a few years, they will be the ones who will have a child or a grandchild to be baptized. So is the chain of faith! What does this mean? I would like to say only this to you: you are the ones who transmit the faith, the transmitters. You have the duty to transmit the faith to these children. The faith is the most beautiful inheritance you will leave them! Only this. Take this thought home with you today. We must be transmitters of the faith. Think of this, think always how to transmit the faith to the children.” (Pope Francis) Holy Spirit Youth Ministry Congratulations to the following families whose children were baptized here: Owen Edward Dombrowski, child of Nicholas & Maura Dombrowski, Clayton Jack Maese, child of Luke & Jessica Maese, Anderson Joseph Pestinger, child of Jonathan & Jennifer Pestinger, and Addison Clare Curtis, child of David & Emily Curtis.
