Pastor John Mr. Heim St. Paul’s Notes THE LIFE OF MOSES The Birth of Moses January 11, 2015 Exodus 2:1-10 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 What are the first five books of the Bible? Exodus 2 1 Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. 5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. Who wrote this story down about Moses’ birth? 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” 8 “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.” “Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.” Acts 22:7 Why was Moses’ upbringing important? APPLICATION Are there things that have happened in your life that confuse you? Are there things in your life that you wonder why God brought them or allowed them in your life? O God our help in ages past our hope for years to come Our shelter from the stormy blast and our eternal home. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come; Be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home. FOR FURTHER THOUGHT Read Exodus 2:1-10 Answer the following questions: 1. Who gave Moses his name? (10) 2. Of what tribe was Moses? (1) 3. How was baby Moses spared from being killed? (2-6) 4. Who was paid to nurse Moses? (7-9) What parallels exist between the birth of Moses and the birth of Jesus? Read Acts 7:22 Explain how the situation in which Moses was raised prepared him to deliver the children of Israel. There was a long period of silence from Jesus’ childhood to adulthood. Jesus had a secret identity = the Son of God. Jesus came to save His Hebrew kinsman first (Mk 7:26-28). Jesus went from being God to being man (Jn 1:1-3; Mk 6:3). Jesus saved a woman at a well (Jn chapter 4). Jesus is the Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11).
