COMMUNITY
NIGHT
I am pleased to present Willowwind’s 2015 Summer Program, “Blow Off S.T.E.A.M this Summer.” In
this brochure you will find some old favorites as well as a number of new engaging classes that fit
within our S.T.E.A.M theme. S.T.E.A.M stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and
Mathematics. All of our summer classes relate to one or more of these areas. In a world with a highly
competitive job market, we strive to equip students with the necessary 21st century skills that will allow
them to make valuable contributions to society. Our summer program provides students with
opportunities to create, collaborate, problem solve, and develop confidence, persistence, and ultimately
a love of learning.
Unique learning experiences, small multi-age classrooms, experienced educators, and a culture of caring
are characteristics that set Willowwind summer programs apart from other programs. Summer classes
at Willowwind engage students in exciting hands-on, experiential learning. Our innovative campus,
including our LEED-Gold certified building, outdoor classrooms and extensive grounds provide ample
opportunities for fun and unique learning throughout our summer program. Classes are organized in
five multi-age groups: preschool (ages 3-5), kindergarten, 1-2nd grade, 3-6th grade, and new to this
year a 6-8th grade course! Class sizes of 10-16 students ensure each child receives individual attention
and is able to take an active role in the classroom experience.
Willowwind’s summer faculty are experienced educators and artists, or specialists in their field. Our
summer teachers return year after year and/or are current Willowwind staff. We are delighted by the
excellence of our summer faculty and their commitment to your child’s education. Willowwind’s safe,
caring environment provides students with the opportunity to grow and learn socially, emotionally, and
academically.
I look forward to seeing you and your child in the coming months as we S.T.E.A.M into summer!
Sincerely, Katherine Anderson

Families looking for hands-on, experiential preschool play this summer have the opportunity to select from
full-day, week-long, and/or theme-based units developmentally geared towards early learners, ages 3-5.
The Willowwind week-by-week option allows a family to select a preschool experience based on a student’s
areas of interest or a family’s need for summer care. Choose anywhere from one session to a full summer’s
worth of sessions to offer your preschooler a fun, safe, and supportive introduction to school. Students must
be at least 3 years old and potty trained to attend.
“I love teaching summer
programs because it’s a great way
to connect with the community.”

Who was Rube Goldberg?
Rube Goldberg was an American cartoon artist,
inventor, sculptor, and engineer. In his lifetime he
created many cartoons that depicted clever and
intrinsic inventions that would assist in common
every day tasks, such as turning on a light switch or
creating a home-made alarm clock.

For the aspiring engineer! Work collaboratively, problem solve, and think critically and creatively to design
a complex machine that completes a simple task. Based on the philosophy of inventor and cartoonist,
Rube Goldberg (see biography above), students will spend this two week class designing overly complex
machines that perform simple tasks such as watering a plant, turning a light on/off, popping a balloon,
shutting a door and more! After learning about Rube Goldberg himself, his philosophy, and viewing
examples of his machines, students will work together to create, test, and fine tune a large scale project.
Get ready for a riveting presentation on the last day of class for family and friends to see!

Registration
Information & Policies
Registration Policies
To secure your space in a class, you must pay half of the total tuition (including the registration fee
and any optional B/ASP fees) at the time of registration. The total tuition must be paid in full no later than
July 1 or 7 days prior to the program start date, whichever comes first. If payment is not made in full by
this date, we reserve the right to cancel your registration. We process all registrations in the order they are
received. We accept registrations as long as there is space available. We do not offer prorated tuition for
absences or late starts. We cannot accommodate drop-ins.
For each student there is a one-time per summer 2015 non-refundable registration fee. The
registration fee is $15 per student for online registration and $35 per student for paper registration.
Who Can Register
Public, private, and home school students ages 3 through Grade 8. For preschool programs, students
must be toilet-trained and at least three years old. Willowwind School provides equal opportunity to
participate in programs and does not discriminate by gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital
status, socioeconomic status, disability, race, national origin, color, religion, and creed.
Class Cancellation Policies
All class cancellations must be processed by Willowwind staff, even if registration was
processed online.
1. If you cancel your registration at least four weeks before the class begins, we will refund
tuition, less a $50 cancellation fee per class.
2. If you cancel your registration less than four weeks before the class starts, no refund will be
given. Any tuition paid for the cancelled class, minus the $50 cancellation fee, becomes a credit,
which you may use toward another Willowwind Summer Program during Summer 2015. Any
lesser tuition costs from the new class will not be refunded.
3. No credit or refund is given to any cancellations occurring within two business days of the
start date of the class.
4. If tuition has not been paid in full by July 1 or 7 days prior to program start date, and no
action to cancel has been taken, no refund or class credit will be issued and the registration will
be terminated.
5. Cancellation by Willowwind: We reserve the right to cancel a class if enrollment is insufficient. Any
tuition paid will be refunded in full.
6. We want all students to be satisfied with their experiences at Willowwind School. If after
attending the first day of class, you decide that you do not want to continue, let us know before
the second class and your tuition will become a credit, which you may use toward another
available space in a Summer 2015 class. In this case, B/ASP fees are non-refundable and will not
be credited. After the second day of class, we will not make any tuition or enrollment adjustments.
Attendance
We expect students to attend every day of the classes in which they enroll, except in the case of illness
or emergency. If a student does miss class, regardless of the reason, tuition will not be prorated and
refunds will not be issued.
Behavior
All students have the right to learn in a safe classroom that is free from excessive distraction. When a
child’s behavior becomes a problem, the faculty and staff use a number of strategies beginning with reteaching, reinforcing and acknowledging appropriate behavior, and moving on to redirecting an individual
student. If a child is unable to correct behavior or is unresponsive to teacher interventions, Willowwind
reserves the right to excuse the child from summer programs and provide parents with suggestions for
other summer program placement. Refunds will not be made for current camp class days not attended due
to dismissal. Should the child be registered for future camps, we will refund for tuition fees paid at time of
dismissal.
Scholarships
If interested in summer camp scholarships, please contact Willowwind at (319) 338-6061.

campers. The Before Summer Program
(BSP) is from 7:30-8:30am and is $35/
week; and the After Summer Program
(ASP) is from 3:30-6:00pm and is $75/
week. Registration for B/ASP occurs with
class registration.
2. If you cancel your registration in B/ASP
at least four weeks before the start date of
the program, we will refund B/ASP fees.
3. If you cancel your registration in B/ASP
less than four weeks before the start date of
the program, no refund will be given. Any

business days of the start date of the
