On the last day of every year we wish everyone a Happy New Year. The assumption is that this Year has the possibility of being either Happy or Sad, Good or Bad, Positive or Negative. Does a new number at the end of a calendar or on the date line on a check really make a difference in our life? Is there any real difference between December 31st and January 1st when it comes to our circumstances or situations? What big changes really happen during one night’s sleep that will have a bearing on an entire year? Truth is nothing in the date changes our life BUT We Can Make Changes! A New Year isn’t some kind of magic reset button but it is the perfect place on a calendar to start to make positive and hopefully lasting changes in our life. I am remind of the word of Joshua in his challenge to God’s people. Joshua 24:14,15 - "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." The truth is every day we have a choice – we can serve the Lord or we can serve ourselves. In fact the choices go even further than just that because throughout each day we constantly make choices of who we will serve, the Lord or ourselves Do I stop to help the stranded motorist? Do I take the time to pray and read my Bible? Do I show my love to my spouse instead of just saying I love you? Do I discipline my children? Do I cheat on the test? Do I lay on the couch instead of coming to connection group? And on and on the choices go. And the choice we make changes the direction our life takes. I love the New Year because at least for me there is a line in the sand drawn and I have the opportunity to start off my decision making for this next year on the right foot. In a small way I have been given a clean slate. The question is what will I choose? One last thing as you decide who you are going to serve on this day remember not only do we have to opportunity to choose our direction we also have the opportunity each day to enjoy God’s affection. Lamentations 3:22,23 - Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Service Lists There are several opportunities to serve within the church! There are lists in the foyer to sign-up to prepare communion, work in the nursery, work in the preschool, be greeters, Service attendant (monitor parking lot and hallways during the service), and to serve communion during the service. The servers on the communion list will be assigned on a monthly basis. If you are on this list and can’t be in attendance, we ask that you find someone to cover for you that week. Sign-up today and get involved! On Saturday, January 17th, all men are invited to attend a Prayer Breakfast at 9:00am in the fellowship hall. Come out and enjoy good food and good fellowship! The Church-wide Mission Trip to Maytown, KY has been scheduled for July12-18! If you are interested in going or have any questions, see Josh Carter. The deposit will be due January 18. On Tuesday, January 20,, the Carter County Christian Men’s Fellowship will meet at First Christian Church in Elizabethton at 7:00pm. All men are invited to come out and worship! Education Team On Sunday, January 25th, there will be an Education Team meeting at 5:00pm. If you are a teacher, you are on this ministry team. Please plan to attend this meeting! Dear Church Family, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, 2015! December just went by in a blur this year. It was such a blessing to see our students and families serving together in so many different ways. We delivered meals through the TLC Ministry in Elizabethton, catered the Adult Christmas Dinner and Party, and wrapped Angel Tree gifts as a church body. The glory of Christ is never more clearly revealed in the church than when God's people get together and serve others for His great Name's sake. I really want to thank all of the youth who helped put together the meal for the Dinner Party. And the utmost gratitude goes to Todd and Patsy Franklin for getting the food, leading the preparation and decoration “teams,” and for putting together a delicious feast and wonderful time for everybody! What fun it was to go caroling (it was my first time getting to do that)! The student Christmas Party was a blast! We played games, ate pizza and junk-food, and even had an indoor snowball fight! The WhiteElephant gift exchange had me laughing for hours! I really enjoyed getting to hang out with everyone there. January promises to be packed with excitement and blessings as well! TCTC is finally here! I can hardly wait. I believe that this will be a life changing weekend for all of us. Keep praying for a heart open to whatever it is that the Lord has in store. We've got a lock -in planned toward the end of the month, along with a couple of service projects. I just may have some “spur-of -the-moment” get-togethers as well. . . we'll see! This month in Sunday School, we will take a fresh look at some of the familiar Bible stories, to see the bigger picture in context. Our youth group lessons will revolve around God's plans and actions within His Creation—and what that means for us. Sunday AM This is going to be a great month! And as we embark on a new year, full of hope and unlimited possibilities, let's pray that God would make 2015 a year where His Glory would abound in our Student and Family Ministry!
