Preparing Your Water Pipes for Winter
●Beware of Nights When Temperatures Drop!!
When temperatures drop below zero, pipes are more likely to freeze or burst without preventative measures
3
taken. The following are some typical instances where this will happen.
①When the pipes remain bare
②When the pipes are located on the northern side of the house.
③When the pipes are located in a direct wind
●What to do when a water pipe bursts
Turn off the water source (stopcock) within the water meter box (located outside)
●What to do when your pipes freeze and no water comes out
Cover the frozen area with a towel, and pour lukewarm water over it to melt the ice
gradually. If you use boiling water, there is a danger of creating cracks in the pipe, or causing them to burst,
so please be careful.
●How to Keep Your Pipes Warm
①Wrap the faucet and pipe in

Say hello to your neighbors
This time we talked to Katchena Demdam, a 22-yr-old student. She was born in the Philippines and
followed her parents to Japan. Since she came she faced a lot of problems with the Japanese language
and Japanese systems but also had great experiences here in Inuyama, which she shared with us
today.
Q: Katchena, can you tell us what you did since you came to Inuyama and what your future plans are?
A: Before I came here, I already studied up to the second year of college in the Philippines. But due to
the difference in the educational system, I thought this was not acknowledged. I thought I could not
go to college without finishing senior high school here. I did not want to stay at home and do nothing,
so I started working in a factory. This was hard but also boring work and I felt really depressed being
there. I have always been independent and therefore could not handle being that helpless to not
even understand simple orders from my supervisor. That is why I quit, started learning Japanese and
entered senior high school while working. Recently, I learned that I have a chance to go to college if
I pass the JLPT N1 exam. So now I'm studying at a Japanese language school, to get into university
or find a better job.
Q: This sounds like a hard way to achieve your goals. But even though you struggled with different
things here, you still seem to be so positive. Do you have any advice for young foreigners coming to
Japan?
A: In my case, my parents could not speak Japanese and did not know the system here, so it was
necessary for me to learn Japanese. And that would be my advice to everyone who comes to Japan:
Even if language schools are expensive, go to an international center in your town, ask for help and
try to get into a language school - even if for just once a week. You get better job opportunities when
you speak Japanese and you will be able to become a part of the local community somehow.
Q: What do you think is a good learning technique for Japanese?
A: Just try to talk to people. Fortunately there were no other Filipinos in my class at senior high school
for which I was forced to talk in Japanese. And because of one girl who was really nice to me even
at times I could not express myself, I learned a lot and felt comfortable to speak.
Q: What was your best experience in Japan so far? And what do you like about Inuyama?
A: I worked at Kanishis International Center and taught Tagalog to primary school students as well as
helping teach Japanese. My Japanese improved so much there and I learned a lot besides that.I
really like Inuyama and do not want to move anywhere else. To me, Inuyama’s nature is great. I like
to go for a walk to Narita-san or Inuyama Castle and I think, there is no prettier thing than the cherry
blossoms close to the river here, right around the corner from Freude.
