Why should my company pay for me to attend?
Although you might understand the benefits of the course that interests you, your manager may not. To be most effective in
justifying attending, you need to articulate the connection between your organization and what you will learn.
Here are some things to consider:
• Focus on what you will specifically bring back to the organization as return for the investment
• Link what you will learn to a challenge or need your organization is experiencing
• Offer to prepare and deliver a short presentation and Q & A to your colleagues to share what you learned (that way others
in your unit will get the benefits of your attendance, too)
• Be ready with a plan that shows who will cover for you while you are attending the course
• Be sure to check out page 35 to see if you qualify for any of the discounts

Implementing Process Change
This course can be applied to the Business Process
Improvement and Supervision Certificates.
$995, 1.2 CEUs Awarded, St. Paul
Why do process changes fail? FEAR!
Acceptance is the most challenging part of
implementing process change. Significant
efforts involving and engaging stakeholders,
including leaders/process owners and workers,
in implementation planning increases the
success of sustainability. Communicating
benefits, recognizing significance of change
for those working in the process, and involving
them in the implementation process will
accelerate adoption of the change.
This course presents tools and techniques

up-front considerations will ensure those
investments are fruitful and have impact for
success.

• Determine competency and capacity for
process change, and who to focus efforts on

Business Process
Improvement
Process Innovation
$995, 1.2 CEUs Awarded, St. Paul
The speed of change in business is constantly
accelerating and keeping up requires constant
improvement. Organizations that improve
processes can usually be successful with the low
hanging fruit and then find it more challenging
to make breakthrough changes. Moving from
incremental change to breakthrough/disruptive
change requires a different approach.
This course presents tools, techniques, and
strategies to innovate processes for higher
impact to the business and customers.
Following this course you will be able to:
• Define a strategy for determining
appropriate processes to apply innovation
and how they impact business strategies
• Utilize various tools and methods to
consider disruptive and breakthrough ideas
in process design
• Determine leverage points for people,
technology, and investments for high-impact
returns
This course can be applied to the Business Process
Improvement Certificate.
Process Mapping and Analysis
$995, 1.2 CEUs Awarded, St. Paul
Many, if not most, public and private
organizations are structured and managed as
collections of specialized functions, each of
which has expertise to contribute to the overall
advancement of the enterprise. All enterprises
exist to create value for customers and
stakeholders, but it is processes, not functions,
that are the means by which that value is
created.
Only in recent years have we begun to shift our
focus from managing people as individuals
to the broader arena of managing business
processes and people across functions. Process
mapping and the analysis of those maps is
the first step to managing this way. Process
mapping helps people look beyond their own
local activities and develop a clear line of
sight to customers and their requirements.
This “horizontal” perspective often challenges
traditional silo thinking and ultimately
demands a fresh, global perspective of how the
enterprise can better meet customer needs.
Following this course you will be able to:
• Understand how processes interact in a
larger system
• Systematically characterize the strengths
and weaknesses of any process
• Use a variety of mapping methods to
streamline and standardize processes
• Analyze whether processes need
improvement or redesign
• Define more clearly the role of IT in Business
Process Management

Improvement Certificate.

What is a certificate?
Certificates are a cluster of courses in a
particular area. You learn practical, up-to-themoment skills and information for job
improvement or advancement. Earning a
certificate can make the difference between
career promotion and stagnation.
Why should I complete a certificate
program?
• Position yourself for a promotion in your
current job
• Make yourself more marketable for other
career options
• Learn practical new knowledge and skills
• Network with others
• Complement a formal course of academic
study with practical training
• Gain credentials to advance in your career
Why not just take individual courses
instead of a certificate program?
Certificate programs can be completed in a
relatively short period of time. You walk away
with skills you can use immediately, gain a
focused, comprehensive educational
experience, and obtain proof of concentrated
study.
How do I enroll in a certificate
program?
Call our Information Center at 612-624-4000 or
visit www.cce.umn.edu/
professionalcertificates; select the certificate
program in which you wish to enroll and click
on the “Certificate Registration” link; select the
certificate enrollment listing; then follow the
prompts on screen.
When should I enroll in a certificate
program?
We recommend that you enroll in a certificate
program as soon as you register for your first
course.
What is a certificate discount?
A certificate discount allows you to pay for all
courses in a certificate at one time for a
discounted rate. See the certificate overview
pages for details.
Do I have to be enrolled in a
certificate program to take one of
the classes?
No. Some people may decide to focus their
professional development on a particular
course or may not be ready to enroll in a
certificate program. If you decide you want to
enroll at a later date, individual courses you
have completed may count toward your
certificate.
Do I have to purchase additional
materials for any of these courses?
No. We provide all the materials and books
you need for class.
Why should my company pay for me
to attend?
Although you might understand the benefits of
the course that interests you, your manager
may not. To be most effective in justifying
attending, you need to articulate the
connection between your organization and
what you will learn. Here are some things to
consider:
• Focus on what you will specifically bring
back to the organization as return for the
investment
• Link what you will learn to a challenge or
need your organization is experiencing
Want to bring our courses
and instructors on site?
•O
ffer to prepare and deliver a short
presentation and Q & A to your colleagues to
share what you learned (that way others in
your unit will get the benefits of your
attendance, too)
•B
e ready with a plan that shows who will
cover for you while you are attending the
course
•B
e sure to check out the Key Information to
see if you qualify for any of the discounts
If I am unemployed, how do I seek
funding to take your courses?
All of our courses are approved as certified
training programs by the Federal Workforce
Investment Act. To learn more about finding
the right course(s) to match your employment
goals visit, www.cce.umn.edu/counselor.
When do you offer courses?
