New Mexico Square and Round Dance Association
68th State Festival – Enchanted Legends
May 8-10, 2015
January 2015
Greetings Fellow Square Dancers,
Fireworks signal the beginning of a new year. We celebrate the New Year and welcome another chance
for us to get it right. Many of us start by making promises to ourselves regarding things we want to change,
accomplish or realize. The new lists of resolutions often look remarkably similar to the lists of years gone
by. Hopefully our resolutions are more than just a new start on old habits
My first resolutions always have to do with FITNESS and FINANCES. I always wish for a thin body and a
fat bank account and hope that it doesn’t get mixed up like last year. We have found that Square Dancing
addresses many of the resolutions which often make up our list. Fitness: Keep exercising! The distance
traveled in an evening of square dancing can be up to five miles. It is more fun and easier on the body than
running that same distance and has all of the same benefits. Finances: Make and stick to a budget! Square
dancing continues to be a relatively low cost entertainment value. Additionally, we are rich when we share
the fun and friendship of square dancing. Health: Be mentally sharp and socially skilled. Square dancing
helps with both by requiring concentration and interaction with other people. It is hard to worry when you
dance and meeting new people and learning new skills help to keep the mind clear of fog. Enjoy more family
time: Plan a date night! Dancing at least once a week at your club or someone else’s can be the perfect night
out with your special someone or can be a wonderful diversion for the whole family. Our son and daughterin-law take their young children dancing each week. The square dance family loves seeing and playing with
the babies and everyone enjoys the music and dancing. Another family we know makes the square dance
night their “touch base” evening of the week. Even though the (grown and teen age) kids and parents are off
living their busy lives, they meet at the square dance to catch-up and enjoy some quality time together. Stop
procrastinating: Quit putting it off! Commit to doing something fun for yourself. Resolve to dance every
chance you get. Make it part of your life plan. We recommend a resolution to attend your club dances
faithfully, other dances as you are able and register NOW for the Enchanted Legends Festival. You will be
glad you did. Ask your club officers or caller for registration forms (every club received a packet of
registration materials to promote the festival) or download them from the website. You know you want to
attend! Why wait to register? We hope you and your club will make square dancing and the 2015 New
Mexico Square and Round Dance Festival a priority.
“May your coming year be filled with MAGIC & DREAMS & GOOD MADNESS.
I hope you READ some fine books & KISS someone who thinks you are WONDERFUL,
and don’t forget to make some ART (write or draw or DANCE or sing or LIVE as only YOU
can) and somewhere in the next year, I hope YOU SURPRISE YOURSELF.” … Neil Gaiman
The lists of resolutions can be long and many resolutions often go unfulfilled. We are going to make it
simple this year. Please, New Year, let us all just be happy and healthy.
Be Legendary!
Wishing you Enchanted Dancing,
David and Bonnie Funk

Warm Yellow Rocks to all you dancers out there. Even tho T or C is experiencing really cold weather
right now, I keep telling people to be thankful because we don’t have to shovel “cold”. Just put on a
couple more layers and be happy. Our move to the Fiddler’s Playhouse has proved to be a good thing
and our Tips & Tunes lessons are producing some great new dancers. No putzin around for the
Angels this year.
Hopefully we will have seen many of you at the SW District dance in Las Cruces on Nov. 29th and now
we are all getting ready for the Christmas and New Years Holidays. The Sierra Twirlers will hold their
Christmas dinner and dance on Dec. 16th, and as of now we will be dancing on December 30th.
All of us wish all of you the very merriest of Christmases and a very healthy, prosperous, and happy
New Year.
