The Matchup
UConn returns home for the first time since late November and jumps into a 14-game
conference stretch when it hosts Vermont for two contests this weekend. The Huskies
have played the fewest league games of any team in Hockey East and can pick up valuable ground in the conference standings against the Catamounts.
The Series: Vermont
The Huskies and Catamounts have met 28 times in the past, with UConn up 19-7-2 in
the all-time series. Vermont has cut into the advantage of late and won six of the last
seven meetings, including two of three a year ago and a meeting earlier this season.
Last year, the Catamounts picked up shutout wins on Nov. 1 in Storrs and Jan. 10 in
Burlington, Elaine Chuli returned the favor with her first career blanking on Jan. 11, a
2-0 UConn victory. Chuli made 32 saves in the contest, and Rachel Farrel and Michela
Cava provided the Husky goals. Vermont also shut out UConn this season, a 6-0 victory
on Nov. 2. Kayla Campero has scored four goals in her 10 career contests against Vermont, and Sarah MacDonnell holds a 1-2-3 ledger in the same span.
A Look At Vermont
Vermont visits Storrs with a 10-10-1 mark on the year, including a 1-7-0 record in Hockey
East play. The Catamounts are coming off a two-game sweep of Colgate in Burlington
on Jan. 2 and 3. Vermont is led by the high-scoring trio of Brittany Zuback, Amanda
Pelkey and Dayna Colang, who each have notched at least 18 points on the season.
Zuback leads the squad and is among the Hockey East leaders with 14 goals, also adding six assists for 20 points. Pelkey has nine goals and a team-high 11 assists to also
register 20 points, while Colang has posted an 8-10-18 scoring line. Bridget Baker and
Amanda Drobot have added eight assists apiece. In goal, Madison Litchfield has seen
the bulk of work and holds a 7-9-1 record with a 2.88 GAA and an .891 save percentage.
Behind her, freshman Molly Depew holds a 3-1-0 record in five starts with a 2.82 GAA
and a .908 save percentage.
Last Time Out
UConn visited No. 6 Harvard to close the non-conference portion of its schedule on
Tuesday night and suffered an 8-2 setback to the Crimson. The Huskies got a pair of
goals from freshman skaters, with Theresa Knutson striking in the first period and
Leah Lum scoring in the second frame. The goals were the sixth and fourth of the season for the two rookies, respectively. Harvard’s high-powered attack was led by a hat
trick from Syndey Daniels and two goals from Lexie Laing, as the Crimson held a 43-18
advantage in shots on goal for the contest. Reigning Hockey East Defensive Player
of the Week Elaine Chuli made 35 saves for the Huskies in the losing effort. The loss
finished out UConn’s non-conference slate with a 4-6-3 record, including a 4-5-1 mark
against teams in the ECAC.

Sensational Seniors
Senior forwards Sarah MacDonnell and Emily Snodgrass are dueling for the UConn lead
in scoring this season, with MacDonnell holding a 4-9-13 ledger and Snodgrass a 9-2-11
mark. The skaters have produced nearly an identical scoring output during their UConn
careers, both skating in 122 games with MacDonnell producing 61 points and Snodgrass
notching 57. Classmate Kayla Campero has recorded 57 career points as well, giving
UConn three active skaters with a chance to crack the Connecticut top-10 scoring list.
MacDonnell is now 10th all-time in scoring at Connecticut, and Campero and Snodgrass
are each three points away. MacDonnell and Snodgrass are also two and seven assists,
respectively, away from the top-10 in that category. Campero became a top-10 all-time
goal-scorer last season, currently slotting in at eighth in program history with 29 tallies.
MacDonnell and Snodgrass are two and one goals away from joining her in the top-10 in
that category.
Fresh Faces
UConn has seen massive contributions from its freshman class this season, with seven
rookie skaters recording at least one point and eight seeing ice time, in addition to
goaltender Annie Belanger making eight starts in goal. Leah Lum and Theresa Knutson
are both among the top freshman scorers in Hockey East, with Knutson’s six goals tied
for the third-most among any league freshman. Lum has posted a 4-6-10 scoring line
from the blue line, good for third on UConn, eighth most among WHEA rookies and
sixth among all conference defensemen. Belanger has been solid during her time in goal,
holding a 3.19 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Reese Maccario has made an impact at
both forward and defenseman and leads all Huskies with an even plus/minus rating on
the year, while Justine Fredette and Madison Badeau both scored their first career goals
in the latter portion of the first half.
Poll Position
UConn was tabbed for a sixth place finish in the 2014 Women’s Hockey East Preseason
Coaches’ Poll. Last season, the Huskies exceeded expectations by finishing in a tie for
fifth place after an eighth place projection. Three-time defending WHEA Tournament
champion Boston University was tabbed to finish first, while neighbor and reigning
regular season champion Boston College split the first place votes and was picked for a
second-place finish. Northeastern came in at third and Vermont rounded at the top four,
while Providence was tabbed fifth. Maine and New Hampshire round out the poll with
seventh and eighth place projections behind UConn.
Connecticut Captains
On May 22, Chris MacKenzie announced that senior Sarah MacDonnell would captain
the Huskies this season, with junior Leah Buress and redshirt-junior Caitlin Hewes serving as assistant captains. MacDonnell led UConn with a 12-15-27 scoring line last season
and is a three-time WHEA All-Academic Team member. Buress has tallied 13 points in 54
career games and is a key cog in all facets of UConn’s special teams, while Hewes has 16
career points from the blue line and was a WHEA All Star Honorable Mention in 2012-13.
Vermont-UConn Connections
UConn does not have a Vermont native on its roster, nor does UVM’s roster hold any
Connecticut natives. However, several Huskies and Catamounds share prep pasts
UConn’s Reese Maccario and Cassandra Opela both played for the Boston Shamrocks,
as did UVM’s Rachael Ade and Madison Litchfield. The Chicago Mission housed Margaret
Zimmer of the Huskies as well as current Catamounts Taylor Willard and Bella Webster.
Vermont Athletic Performance Coach Marc Hickok is a 2002 UConn graduate and was a
placekicker on the UConn football team. Hickok is fifth in Husky history in made PATs,

Former UConn forward Jessica Lutz (2007-2010) scored a goal at 13:53 of the third period to lift Switzerland to its first lead of the 2014
Sochi Olympics Bronze medal game in an eventual 4-3 win over Sweden. The goal helped Switzerland to its first medal in the history of its
women’s ice hockey program. Lutz also became the first UConn alum to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. Overall for the tournament,
Lutz finished with a 2-1-3 scoring line, tying for the team-highs in goals and points in her six games. She skated in 109:00 in the six contests, and fired 11 shots on goal. During her time at UConn, Lutz skated in 95 games and posted four goals and 13 assists to total 17 points.

The MacKenzie File
Entering his second year at the helm of the program, Chris MacKenzie was named
the second head women’s ice hockey coach in program history at the University
of Connecticut on May 2, 2013. A 12-year veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks,
MacKenzie brings experience in both the women’s and men’s games to his post
at UConn.
During MacKenzie’s inaugural season in Storrs in 2013-14, the Huskies posted a sixwin improvement from the prior year. The signature win of the campaign came at
home on Feb. 9, 2014, when UConn blanked then-No. 7 Boston College at Freitas
Ice Forum for the program’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2010.
MacKenzie’s charges also excelled in the classroom during his first season, with
UConn placing 12 student-athletes on the Women’s Hockey East All-Academic
Squad.
For the 2012-13 season, MacKenzie served as the assistant women’s coach at Ohio
State. The Buckeyes posted a 19-15-3 and fourth place finish in the WCHA. The 19
wins marked the second best win total in program history and the team reached as
high as number six in the USCHO poll; the highest in program history.
Prior to joining the OSU staff, MacKenzie spent a two-year stint as the head coach
for his alma mater at Niagara University, a year before the program was discontinued by the university. In two seasons, the Purple Eagles registered a 23-31-10
record, including two second place finishes in the CHA.
MacKenzie coached on the men’s side for his first eight seasons at UMass-Lowell.
During those eight seasons, the Riverhawks experienced three 20-win seasons
and were the Hockey East Tournament runner ups in 2009.
As a player and 2000 graduate at Niagara, MacKenzie served as a team captain for
all four seasons upon the program’s inception in 1996. As a senior, he helped the
Purple Eagles to a CHA Regular Season and Tournament Championship as well as
an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
As a freshman, MacKenzie was honored by then-head coach Blaise MacDonald
and then-assistant coach Dave Burkholder as the program’s first captain. He currently holds several records at Niagara, including most goals, assists and points
in a career and season by a defenseman. MacKenzie received Player of the Year
honor in 1998 and was a CHA All-Star 2000.
MacKenzie earned his bachelor’s of arts in Commerce from Niagara in 2000, graduating Cum Laude, and earned a master’s of arts in psychology from UMass-Lowell
in 2003.
MacKenzie and his wife Allison have a four year old daughter Morgan, and a one
year old son, Ren.
