Corona - Norco - Riverside - Woodcrest - Lake Mathews - Eastvale Sentinel Weekly News Wednesday, January 7, 2015 VOL. XXIII ISSUE 01 Stacy Family Custom Van Project News Desk Newsstand price .25c Character Counts Making Resolutions of Principle Commentary by Michael Josephson The Stacy Family Bill Stacy is the football coach at Centennial High School Huskies in Corona. His team loves him and he loves his job. He and his family have a lot on their plate however. Having one child with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a progressive and muscle degenerative disease, is devastating. Now, multiply that by three and you have the Stacy family of Norco. Bill and Kelly Stacy are hard- working and loving parents to four boys. NEWS DESK PHOTO Bill is a teacher and coach in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Kelly is a very busy stay-at-home mom. Wil, 18, is the oldest of the Stacy’s four boys. Wil does not have Muscular Dystrophy. He is a tremendous support to his family and willing role model for his three younger brothers. Wil graduated from Santiago High School in Corona and is currently a college freshman. Elijah, 13, was diagnosed with DMD at age 7, shortly after his youngest brother, Kai, was born. Elijah attends El Cerrito Middle School in Corona. He loves wheelchair basketball, achieves excellent grades, and demonstrates leadership qualities. Max, 10, suffered a stroke during open heart surgery at 3 months of age. He was left blind and physically and cognitively impaired. Therefore, his diagnosis of DMD was not confirmed until recently. Max Please turn to page 2 Big Will Killed - Arrests Made By Darlene Dukelow-Burton Richard Williamson “Big Will”, standing at 6 foot 4 inches, was the owner of Big Will’s Security Service in Riverside. His security service protected businesses in both counties in the IE. He was shot and killed on Thursday, January 1, while on-duty at a New Year’s celebration being held at the Cal Skate in Grand Terrace. Two young males in their 20’s were attending the roller rink New Year’s party. One had become angry over losing a hat and caused a commotion, so they were asked to leave. Later at around 2 a.m., they allegedly opened fire on two people that were standing outside. One was a security guard and both were shot, though their injuries are mild. Big Will was standing behind them when it happened and purposefully walked straight at the shooters, firing back at them. On Friday night, January 2, over 400 mourners held a candlelight vigil for Richard “ B i g Wi l l ” Wi l l i a m s o n . Williamson was slain while working security at Cal Skate early New Year’s Day. Michael Lang said, “Big Will is being remembered as a hero. His actions saved the lives of many early New Year’s Day.” William Hayes said, “Thank You to everyone that came out and paid respects to Big Will it was an honor to hear so many great stories.” San Bernardino Police Department announced on Monday, January 5th that they had identified and arrested 5 Please turn to page 2 The tradition of making New Year’s Resolutions reflects one the very best qualities of human nature – the ability to reflect on and assess our lives in terms of the goals we set for ourselves and the principles we believe in. It’s still not too late to formulate a self-improvement plan to make our outer lives and inner selves better by adopting more positive attitudes, living up to our highest values, and strengthening our relationships. Start with your attitude. Resolve not to sabotage your ambitions, selfconfidence, and ideals with self-fulfilling pessimism and cynicism. Don’t undermine your happiness or success with negativity. Stop wasting time and energy complaining, condemning, resenting, regretting, and worrying. Replace griping with gratitude. Make a daily conscious effort to approach every problem and opportunity with positive energy, enthusiasm, optimism, and even self-conscious cheerfulness. Next, resolve to pay more attention to your moral compass and your beliefs about right and wrong. Promise yourself to be more scrupulous about being honest, keeping promises, and standing strong against temptations. Commit to doing the right thing even when it may cost more than you want to pay, and be more accountable, respectful, fair, and compassionate. Treat your character as your most important asset. Finally, resolve to improve your relationships. Remember, people always remember how you made them feel. Help people feel better about themselves, not worse. Overcome the impulse to criticize, scold, and condemn, and instead look for every opportunity to praise, encourage, and support. Above all, be kind. Make this year the best ever! Continued from page 1 PHOTO by LOUDLABS loves music and attending his special school (Victress Bower) for children with multiple handicaps. Max lives at home and requires full care 24/7. He is confined to a wheelchair for mobility purposes. Kai, 7, attends first grade at Sierra Vista Elementary School in Norco. He wants to follow his friends and classmates. However, the early signs of DMD (enlarged calf muscles, walking on tip toes, and over-all muscle weakness) often prevent him from keeping up and/or participating in physical activities with his peers. Currently, the Stacy family transports their family in their 2007 Yukon-XL. They place Max in his custom car seat and then fold and store his wheelchair in the rear of the vehicle. Next they lift Elijah into a middle seat and load his power chair onto a lift/ramp on the back of the Yukon. It is getting increasingly more difficult for one adult to lift and transfer Elijah. Currently, Kai requires minimal assistance getting into his car seat. However, in the near future, he will also require a power chair for mobility. So the goal of this project is to raise funds to allow the Stacy family to purchase a custom van. It will need to include seating for the driver plus two to three passengers. In addition, it will need a loading ramp and spots within the van to anchor one wheelchair and two power chairs. A new van would mean “freedom to keep living and enjoying our lives,” Today the entire family can’t travel together. Kelly Stacy needs help and can’t bring her children to doctors’ “It’s not really about us anymore,” she said. “It’s about them having a good, quality life “We’ll do fundraisers until we make it.” Together, as a community, we can do this! PHOTO by JERRY SOIFER Christmas came early to a Corona family when a donated wheel chair was presented to 4-year-old Joselyn Ordonez who had hers stolen from the front porch of her home the week before. Corona police said in a release that with the outpouring of support from the community, charities, and specific individuals, police coordinated the donation of a brand new wheelchair that fits the specific needs for this little girl by the following day of the chair theft. January is a critical month for the hundreds of thousands of potential Social Security beneficiaries who are reaching 66 (their so-called full retirement age) in 2015. The important message: Most of them should at least consider the possibility of filing for their benefits this month, even though they may not be reaching their retirement age until later in the year. But please note: This procedure should not be employed by folks planning on using one of the Social Security maximizing strategies I’ve discussed so often in this column, like file and suspend or file and restrict, because those provisions generally require you to wait until age 66 before filing for benefits. The reason for this early filing timeframe for everyone else has to do with some quirky and complicated features of Social Security’s earnings penalty provisions. Those provisions generally keep seniors who are still working off of Social Security’s rolls until they reach that magic full retirement age. The law essentially says if you are over 62 but under your full retirement age and are still working full time, you are not eligible for Social Security. Specifically, the rules require that the SSA deduct $1 from any retirement benefits you might be due for every $2 you earn over $15,720 in 2015. However, the rules say that once you reach your full retirement age, you are due full Social Security benefits even if you are still working and no matter how much money you are making. Let’s follow an example. Let’s say Ed was born in July 1949, which means he’ll reach his full retirement age of 66 in July 2015. And let’s further say Ed generally makes about $80,000 per year, and he plans to continue working indefinitely. Based on the earnings penalty rules I briefly outlined above, Ed figures he must wait until July (his full retirement age) to begin collecting his Social Security benefits. As I said, at that magical point the earnings penalty rules no longer apply and he can get his Social Security. And prior to that, he’s making way more than the $15,720 income threshold. Specifically, it says you can earn up to $41,880 between January and the month you reach your full retirement age and still get Social Security benefits. And even if you earn more than $41,880, you lose only $1 from your benefits for every $3 you exceed that threshold. Ed is going to make $40,000 between January and June (i.e., before he reaches the magic age of 66). And that’s just under the $41,880 threshold for 2015, which means Ed is due benefits beginning in January. He does NOT have to wait until July to apply for his Social Security checks. There is a bit of a catch. By starting his benefits in January, Ed will be accepting a slightly reduced amount. (Benefits are reduced roughly one-half of one percent for each month they are taken before full retirement age.) If Ed’s Social Security benefit at full retirement age is $2,200 per month, let’s look at his options. Ed’s first option is to wait until July (his full retirement age) to start his Social Security benefits. He’ll get $2,200 per month for six months or $13,200 for the year 2015. Ed’s second option is to file for Social Security in January. Starting his benefits slightly early, his monthly rate is reduced to about $2,130. That comes out to $25,560 in total benefits for the year 2015. The downside to option two is his ongoing monthly benefit rate will be $2,130, $70 less than what he would have been getting in option one. But because he’d be getting about $12,360 less in total 2015 benefits in option one, it would take Ed a long time to make up that loss with his extra $70 per month in ongoing benefits. If I were Ed, I’d choose the second option. Even if Ed was going to make more than the $41,880 income threshold between January and June, he only loses one dollar in Social Security benefits for each three dollars he exceeds that amount. So he probably still comes out ahead by filing in January. Here is a quick example using that scenario. Let’s say Ed will make $50,000 between January Please turn to page 9 By Dr. David Lipschitz The evidence is compelling. Living a heart-healthy lifestyle is the best way to reduce not only your risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure but it also leads to lower risks of the common cancers afflicting us (lung, breast, colon, prostate) and delays the age at which Alzheimer’s disease becomes symptomatic. You would think that this well-known information would mean that most of us do everything we can to meet these critically important health goals. In January of this year, in the hopes of reducing the population’s risk of heart disease by 20 percent, the American Heart Association published “Life’s Simple 7,” an article detailing the steps needed to reduce your risk of heart disease. These are: 1) Maintaining an ideal body weight, measured by the body mass index that should be between 18.5 and 24.5. 2) Getting at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly. 3) Quitting smoking at least 1 year ago or never smoking. 4) Maintaining your total cholesterol below 200. 5) Having a blood pressure consistently below 120/80. 6) Assuring that you do not have diabetes or prediabetes by keeping a fasting blood pressure below 100. 7) And finally consuming at least 4 or the 5 AHA recommendations for a hearthealthy diet. The five dietary components include: eating at least 4 and a half cups of fruits and vegetables daily, eating oily fish such as salmon, trout or herring at least twice weekly, limiting intake of sweets and simple sugars, having 3 or 4 servings of whole grains daily, eating less than 1500 mg of sodium daily. Amazingly, recent research from the University of Vermont showed that less than 30 percent of 18,000 Americans met fewer than three of the seven AHA recommendations and less than 20 percent met all of “life’s simple 7,” which assures the greatest chance of avoiding heart disease. President Obama’s biggovernment spending, planning and executive-branch overreach were crushed at the polls. Elections matter. The GOP has been rejuvenated. Republican governors will lead the way. And the Republican majorities in the House and Senate haven’t been this big since the 1920s. They know what to do — develop a positive agenda: Pro-growth tax reform and spending limits. Pro-energy. Pro-King Dollar and Fed monetary reform. Pro-health-care choice. Pro-immigration reform. Promarriage. Pro-family. An American renaissance is in the making. Let the GOP put its best policy foot forward. If Obama vetoes the growth reforms, so be it. The 2016 agenda will be set for a Republican presidential victory. So why can’t 2015 be an optimistic year? The psychology of pessimism and negativism that has engulfed America for so many years can melt away. Retiring Sen. Tom Coburn recently told me that America is a better country than it is showing. Long ago when I went to college, campuses were about 70 percent male, and until 1970 it was still nearly 60 percent. Today, however, the male percentage has fallen to the low 40s on most campuses. The American Council on Education reports that women have averaged 57 percent of enrollments since the year 2000. Women received nearly 60 percent of all college degrees conferred in 2010. This has dramatically changed social relationships and interactions among students. Most girls and even some boys do not like this change, but nobody knows what to do about it, and few are even willing to discuss it. One female student described the new relationship between the sexes like this. “Out of that 40 percent male population, there are maybe 20 percent we would consider dating, and out of those 20 percent, 10 have girlfriends, so Please turn to page 13 Family Fragmentation: Can Anything Be Done? By Michael Barone How big a problem is family fragmentation? “Immense,” says Mitch Pearlstein, head of the Minnesota think tank Center of the American Experiment. “The biggest domestic problem facing this country.” So big he went out and interviewed 40 experts of varying ideology across the nation and relayed their answers in his book “Broken Bonds: What Family Fragmentation Means for America’s Future.” That’s the good news. The bad news is that none of the experts is confident he has an answer, and neither is Pearlstein. What is family fragmentation? The facts are easy to state. About 40 percent of babies born in America these days are born outside of marriage. That’s true of about 30 percent of nonHispanic whites, more than 50 percent of Hispanics and more than 70 percent of blacks. Back in 1965 Daniel Patrick Moynihan was prompted to write his report on the black family when the out-of-wedlock birth rate of blacks was 25 percent. He believed, correctly, that this spelled trouble ahead. Half a century later that’s Please turn to page 12 The ‘Equality’ Racket By Thomas Sowell Some time ago, burglars in England scrawled a message on the wall of a home they had looted: “RICH BASTARDS.” Those two words captured the spirit of the politicized vision of equality — that it was a grievance when someone was better off than themselves. That, of course, is not the only meaning of equality, but it is the predominant political meaning in practice, where economic “disparities” and “gaps” are automatically treated as “inequities.” If one racial or ethnic group has a lower income than another, that is automatically called “discrimination” by many people in politics, the media and academia. It doesn’t matter how much evidence there is that some groups work harder in school, perform better and spend more postgraduate years studying to acquire valuable skills in medicine, science or engineering. If the economic end results are unequal, that is treated as a grievance against those with better outcomes, and a sign of an “unfair” society. The rhetoric of clever people often confuses the undeniable fact that life is unfair with the claim that a given Please turn to page 12 Wednesday, January 7, 2015 - Page 9 Kids Talk About God How Can We Make Jesus More Important In Our Lives? By Carey Kinsolving “We can make Jesus more important in our lives by putting Christ in the center of all we do,” says Nathaniel, 8. “We do this by finding pleasure in studying God’s Word, learning about him and hiding God’s Word in our heart that we might not sin against him.” The issue in all of life always comes down to this question, “Who is the center of the universe?” If I’m the center, then everything must revolve around me. Living the selfcentered life is difficult because I can’t always get everyone to conform to my plan for their lives. It’s hard taking the place of God, but many try it. With Jesus Christ as the center, my world takes on a decidedly different orbit. I’m now seeking to discover God’s game plan for my life and others. I don’t have the pressure of pushing my way to the top of a fantasy world where I’m the center. As the good shepherd, Jesus will lead me in life paths that are good for me and others. People may misunderstand me or even ridicule me because I’m not following the crowd, but it’s OK because I’m living before an audience of One. I’m not living for people’s approval. I’m living in light of eternity. I’m not a soloist. I’m a team player, and God is calling the plays. When the disciples of John the Baptist told him that the ministry of Jesus was increasing, he said, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). How does Jesus increase? Use your memory, says Chandler, 8: “Remember all the times that Jesus saved you from something so that it will get you to believe in him.” Short memories cause us to block God’s plan for causing Jesus to increase. We so easily forget where we were when God found us. The Bible paints a picture of God ever pursuing us when we were “lost.” Yes, lost. Without God, you are as lost as a goose flying north in the middle of winter. Social Security Continued from page 7 and June. That’s $8,120 over the $41,880 limit. And one third of that excess, or about $2,707 must be deducted from his 2015 benefits. But he would still get $22,853 in benefits for the year. That’s still way better than the $13,200 he would be due by waiting until July to file for his Social Security. I know these rules are complicated and the math in the examples above To be found by God means you come face-to-face with the reality that the universe revolves around Jesus Christ, not you. You realize that when Jesus died on the cross, he died for your sins. You accept God’s free gift of eternal life by believing in Jesus as your savior. Now that your eternal destiny is sealed, you can reorient your world as Grace, 9, suggests: “We need to be more like a servant and become less important because Jesus is the one who should be the most important.” When Jesus’ disciples got in an argument over who was the greatest disciple, Jesus said, “He who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves” (Luke 22:26). I can guarantee this is not what the disciples had in mind when they argued over who was top dog. The disciples were shocked when Jesus washed their feet at the Passover meal on the night before his crucifixion. Slaves or household servants usually washed the feet of guests. Think about this: As Jesus becomes more important in your life, you’ll think in ways you can’t even imagine now. Like the disciples, you’ll be shocked at what Jesus wants to do through you. Memorize this truth: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). Ask this question: Is Jesus increasing or decreasing in your life? Children born into families that raise them with love and with care to see that they acquire knowledge, values and discipline that will make them valuable members of society have far more chances of economic and other success in adulthood than children raised in families that lack these qualities. Studies show that children whose parents have professional careers speak nearly twice as many words per hour to them as children with working class parents — and several times as many words per hour as children in families on welfare. There is no way that children from these different backgrounds are going to have equal chances of economic or other success in adulthood. The fatal fallacy, however, is in collecting statistics on employees at a particular business or other institution, and treating differences in the hiring, pay or promotion of people from different groups as showing that their employer has been discriminating. Too many gullible people buy the implicit assumption that the unfairness originated where the statistics were collected, which would be an incredible coincidence if it were true. Worse yet, some people buy the idea that politicians can correct the unfairness of life by cracking down on employers. But, by the time children raised in very different ways reach an employer, the damage has already been done. What is a problem for children raised in families and communities that do not prepare them for productive lives can be a bonanza for politicians, lawyers and assorted social messiahs who are ready to lead fierce crusades, if the price is right. Many in the media and among the intelligentsia are all too ready to go along, in the name of seeking equality. But equality of what? Equality before the law is a fundamental value in a decent society. But equality of treatment in no way guarantees equality of outcomes. On the contrary, equality of treatment makes equality of outcomes unlikely, since virtually nobody is equal to somebody else in the whole range of skills and capabilities required in real life. When it comes to performance, the same man may not even be equal to himself on different days, much less at different periods of his life. What may be a spontaneous confusion among the public at large about the very different meanings of the word “equality” can be a carefully cultivated confusion by politicians, lawyers and others skilled in rhetoric, who can exploit that confusion for their own benefit. Regardless of the actual causes of different capabilities and rewards in different individuals and groups, political crusades require a villain to attack — a villain far removed from the voter or the voter’s family or community. Lawyers must likewise have a villain to sue. The media and the intelligentsia are also attracted to crusades against the forces of evil. But whether as a crusade or a racket, a confused conception of equality is a formula for never-ending strife that can tear a whole society apart — and has the figure for supposedly privileged nonHispanic whites. Scandinavian countries also have high out-of-marriage birth rates, but couples tend to stay together and raise their children to adulthood. In America, not so much. Pearlstein notes that the percentage of children living with two parents in 2009 was 86 percent among Asians, 75 among non-Hispanic whites, 67 percent among Hispanics and 37 percent among blacks. But these numbers include step-parents. And when you take into account findings that child abuse by stepfathers is substantially above average, that’s not entirely good news. The numbers that show that children raised by their two biological (or adoptive) parents do substantially better in every respect in life than those who are not. They do better in school and in higher education, they do better at jobs and economically, they develop more stable and lasting relationships personally. They are more likely to earn success — what American Enterprise Institute Arthur Brooks identifies as the chief source of personal satisfaction and happiness. When confronted with those facts, the impulse of most Americans is to be wary of passing judgment on single parents. Some of them indeed do raise children who do well. Many struggle through difficulties that happily married parents seldom experience. Back in the culturally conformist America of the mid-20th century, there was a stigma against unmarried parenthood and divorce. Marriage rates were higher and divorce rates much lower. But there is little sign that such a stigma will return. Even among cultural and religious conservatives, there is no perceptible move to repeal the no-fault divorce laws that almost every state passed in the 1970s. Family fragmentation is unsettling nevertheless, because it seems to be creating a two-tier society. In his 2012 book “Coming Apart,” AEI scholar Charles Murray highlighted how among the wealthiest 20 percent of whites, divorce rates and single parenthood have returned to 1950s levels after a blip upward in the 1970s. But among the poorest 30 percent of whites — and among much larger percentages of Hispanics and blacks — divorce and single parenthood have become a way of life. That is exacerbated by the recent decline in college attendance by young men and the dearth of job opportunities for less educated men. That makes them less marriageable and less prepared to take responsibility for children they may father. Brookings Institution scholar Isabel Sawhill, echoing Murray, tells Pearlstein that we are becoming a “bifurcated society,” not just because of income inequality but because of family formation patterns. This is something like the view Continued from page 8 Continued from page 8 already done so in many countries. But should we be afraid to tell people there’s a better way? Wednesday, January 7, 2015 - Page 13 New Math Optimism all the girls are fighting over that other 10 percent.” Anybody who understands human nature realizes that this situation changes behavior. Girls do not want to get left out in the cold, so they compete for men on men’s terms. This results in more casual hook-ups that are dead-end encounters with no future and no real romantic relationships. A psychology professor described this bluntly: “When men have the social power, they create a man’s idea of relationships: more partners, more sex, no commitment.” Colleges claim they grant admissions based on academic merit, and girls come out of high school with better grades than boys. But that doesn’t always mean they are smarter or more capable of doing college work or succeeding after graduation. Boys do far better on average than girls on the SAT test for mathematics, which means that boys are better prepared than girls for STEM majors in college. This has been true every year for more than 40 years. Nearly twice as many boys as girls attain very high scores on the Math SAT, with an immense difference at the high end. But the job market for STEM graduates is not as good as it should be because of corporations’ preference for hiring lower-paid, easyto-control foreigners on H-1B visas, so many American guys decide that the high cost of an engineering degree is not worth it. A shocking 46 percent of recent college graduates work in jobs that do not require a college degree. Boys are more likely than girls to look at the cost-benefit tradeoff of going to college. The imbalance of far more women than men at colleges has been a factor in the various sex scandals that have made news in the last couple of years. So, what’s the solution? One solution might be to impose the duty on admissions officers to arbitrarily admit only half women and half men. Another solution might be to stop granting college loans, thereby forcing students to take jobs to pay for their tuition and eliminate time for parties, perhaps even wiping out time for fraternities and sororities. I went through college while working a full-time manuallabor job, and I don’t regret a minute of it; it was a great learning experience. Also inside the economy, business investment is improving, housing is slow to recover but is recovering and wage and salary income The popularity of the new college football playoff system illustrates how successful men’s college sports can be for participants and fans alike. But when colleges eliminate men’s sports, women are hurt by the resulting gender imbalance in enrollment. Phyllis Schlafly is a lawyer, conservative political analyst and author of two new books just published this year: “Who Killed the American Family” (WND) and the 50th Anniversary edition of “A Choice Not An Echo” (Regnery), available at eagleforum.org, amazon, and usual sources. She can be contacted by e-mail at phyllis@ eagleforum.org. COPYRIGHT 2015 CREATORS.COM is growing at 4.5 percent. Less 2 percent on consumer prices, that leaves over 3 percent of real spending power. Not fabulous, but good. Looking at Treasury bond yields, real rates are rising — a sign of better growth — while inflation fears are declining. Banking risk indicators, like 2-year swaps spreads, are very low. And profits, the mother’s milk of stocks and the lifeblood of the economy, stand at a record-high share of GDP and are likely to keep growing in a 5 to 10 percent range. Fortunately, the Fed’s QE balance-sheet expansion never really worked. Excess bank reserves never circulated throughout the economy. The money supply has been quiescent. And that’s a good thing, because if QE had worked, the inflation rate could be 10 or 15 percent instead of less than 2 percent. Health Continued from page 7 was presented at this year’s national AHA meeting. In this study, participants over the age of 45 answered detailed phone questionnaires that evaluated their risks of heart disease and the number of the seven steps followed over an almost fiveyear period. Those who met two or three of life’s simple steps had a 36 percent reduction in risk of death. Those who met either four or five of the seven steps were 46 percent less likely to die, and those who met all seven had a reduction in risk of death by 54 percent. The most encouraging aspect of this information is that meeting some or all of these seven steps is relatively easy and that all causes of death are reduced by just being healthy. Clearly only the truly compulsive of us will meet all seven, but remember that the reduced risk of death if you meet four of the seven is not much lower than meeting them all. The best advice is to do your best to meet as many of these steps as possible and do not fret if you can’t. To achieve these goals, the health profession must refocus their efforts from treating acute and chronic disease to health promotion and disease Meanwhile, the federal government’s spending size has dropped from near 25 percent of GDP to less than 21 percent of GDP. Obama’s so-called spending stimulus has been stood on its head. In the early years more spending generated less growth — the worst recovery since WWII. But in recent times less spending is producing more growth — probably toward a 3 percent trend. (We need roughly 4 to 5 percent growth in the years ahead to reclaim America’s 70-year average of 3.5 percent.) A final optimistic thought: A big tax cut for large and small businesses combined with King Dollar is the exact supply-sidegrowth mix that generated booms in the 1960s, ‘80s and ‘90s. We can do this. Happy New Year. COPYRIGHT 2015 CREATORS.COM prevention. I strongly believe that educating my patients on how to stay healthy and to understand any illness they have is the key to better care and should be the cornerstone of health care reform. To achieve these goals, I believe strongly in “couple care.” Husbands and wives should see their doctor together, and if single, consider bringing a friend, relative or partner. As a couple, my patients may elect to be seen by their physician individually or together. We prefer the latter as understanding each other’s health problems avoids misunderstandings and offers a greater chance of following direction. After the medical evaluation, the couple receives extensive nutrition, stress and exercise counseling that is followed by an ongoing education program to learn how to stay healthy and how to navigate the health care system should an illness occur. Consider seeing your doctor as a couple. If married, bring your spouse, if single, a relative or friend. Together, the chances of success are greater than if seen individually. As the New Year approaches, recommit yourself to health and happiness; the benefits are truly enormous. You can bet no one in our neighborhood was sleeping – what with the sirens, flashing police car lights, and blaring Rap music. The police had just put a suspect in one of the cars. But wait. Let’s go back to the beginning. It was a storybook Christmas Eve. Our tree was aglow with multicolored lights, tinsel, and those little ball decorations. A majestic angel sat atop this festive image. A warm fire was licking at fresh wood in the fireplace where the kids had orderly fastened their stockings from smallest to largest. Mother and I sat warmed by the fire while sipping eggnog and brandy. Supper was finished and the kids sat in front of the television, giggling with anticipation of the presents they would find under the tree in the morning. They each had submitted their list of wants and wishes to Mother with the assurance she had a direct line to Santa Clause. Little Jenny had her heart set on the latest doll craze. Big sister Kim is expecting the latest iPod. Even 13 year-old Todd had made a list, but his chances of getting the World of War video game are a less than slim. It didn’t help that he hung a huge – and apparently unwashed – sweat sock in place of the usual Christmas stocking. At this age, a kid can be his own worst enemy. It took about half a dozen increasingly less subtle hints to get them in bed. Finally, they had crawled reluctantly upstairs, and soon had images of sugar plumbs dancing in their heads. Well, at least I thought they might be asleep. Mother and I placed the presents we worked so hard the past month to wrap and conceal under the tree. Once in bed, we soon fell into a deep sleep that was rudely interrupted by the loud exhaust of some inconsiderate driver who apparently thought everyone in the neighborhood would enjoy Rap music (actually just thumping noise) from his over-powered amp. Mother was dead to the world asleep, but the noise didn’t move down the street like it usually does. I decided to investigate. As I quietly started down the stairs, I spied movement. Grabbing the baseball bat I keep near the staircase, I proceeded to the bottom. Suddenly a man came out of the kitchen with a glass of milk and eating a cookie. “Just hold it right there!” I commanded pointing the bat at him. “Who are you and what are you doing in my house?” I asked. From his cookie filled mouth, he made a noise that sounded like it might have been “Santa.” I cast a glance toward the Christmas tree. A bag full of presents lie next to it. “Mother, call 911. We have a burglar.” I shouted. “You! Don’t move a hair, or I’ll part it for you with this bat.” I said. The man standing before me had on a red leather jacket and Wrangler jeans with soot on them. He stood about six-feet tall, 170 pounds, and had a salt-and-pepper goatee and Mohawk haircut. The tattoo of a deer on his neck poked out from under his collar. With the noise still thumping outside , I asked, “Is that your noise out there?” He shook his head in affirmation. “You must be new at robbing houses. That racket probably woke the entire neighborhood.” That’s about when the police arrived, adding to the cacophony. Two officers made their way into the house with guns drawn. “Drop the bat!” One ordered. “I’m the home owner!” I said putting the bat on the floor. “This guy broke into our house, and was stealing Christmas presents.” I explained pointing to the presentfilled bag on the floor.” “Is that right?” The other officer asked the intruder. “Well, I know this looks bad, and you’re probably not going to believe it, but I am Santa Clause.” The intruder said. “Right! I don’t believe it. Show me some ID and explain why you are in this family’s house.” “I have presents for Jenny, Kim, and Todd. I was about to put them in their stockings when Mr. pajamas here came down with a bat in his hands.” He said handing his wallet to the other officer. They put handcuffs on the man and placed him in their police car muttering something about rights on the way. Suddenly the second officer looked up from the suspect’s wallet with an incredible look on his face and said, “You ain’t going to believe this. His drivers license says his name is Nicholas Saint!” “Of course, everyone knows Santa drives a fire-engine-red Dodge four-by-four full of bags of Christmas presents and blaring Christmas Rap in ear-splitting decibels.” “Look dude,” Mr. Saint said, “this is the 21st Century. You can’t actually still expect Santa to be an overweight dude wearing a red clown suit, and flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, can you?” The intruder was carted off to jail along with his bag of Christmas presents. The next morning I was amazed to find that not a single present was missing under our tree. “Our Santa-punk must have not had time to take anything but cookies from us.” I said. That afternoon a police sergeant called to tell us, the suspect had mysteriously escaped. Actually, they said he had simply disappeared from his holding cell. “But we still have his bag of presents.” The sergeant said. “We found three presents with the name Jenny, Kim and Todd on them. Are they any of your missing presents?” “Uh, no…” I slowly said. “What’s in them?” “The one with the Jenny name is some sort of doll. The Kim one is an iPod, and Todd has a Video Game.” “What is the name of the game?” I asked. “I dunno, some World of War game.” He said. Okay, maybe in the 21st Century Santa does drive a fire-engine-red Dodge four-by-four. I suppose I can only look forward to chunks of coal in my stocking next year. PHOTO by DAVID DODD County Seeks Volunteers to Help Count Homeless Population By Raymond Smith Volunteers are needed to participate in a survey of homeless people in cities and communities throughout Riverside County on January 28. The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) Homeless Programs Unit has commissioned the biannual homeless counts since 2005, when a count and survey was first required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This year, DPSS will organize the event using volunteers from the community, county agencies and nonprofit organizations that serve the homeless population. The federally mandated count takes place every year in late January. Last January 2014, DPSS received funding through the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs to do a special count of homeless veterans. DPSS is recruiting about 400 volunteers at community meetings countywide. Prospective volunteers can register and receive information online at: www.riversidehomelesscounts.com Volunteers must be willing and able to walk into areas where homeless people might be living, and conduct the brief survey on streets, in abandoned buildings, at freeway overpasses and underpasses, in vehicles, encampments and other areas. The survey is scheduled from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Volunteers are also being sought to go to places where homeless people may be receiving services, such as soup kitchens, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Each volunteer will be required to participate in a 90-minute orientation between now early January. A schedule of orientations throughout the county is available on the website. In 2013, 2,098 homeless people were identified in Riverside County during the annual survey. For more information, please send an email to: RivCoPIT@RiversideDPSS.org or call: (951) 358-4470.
