Such an event can not only cause serious injury, but can also impact one’s mobility and independence. Research has shown that low-impact exercises that include controlled motion can aid in balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility. Tai Chi is a form of exercise that includes these elements. The Genesee County Office for the Aging, in cooperation with GLOW YMCA, will be offering Tai Chi- Moving for Better Balance classes once each week in the lounge, beginning in January 2015. Classes will be led by trained YMCA instructors. Classes can be tailored to the mobility level of participants and can be performed either standing or seated. A demonstration of Tai Chi-Moving for Better Balance will take place before classes start. This will give you an opportunity to see what Tai Chi is, and to ask instructors any questions. The classes will be a great opportunity to try a different form of exercise, socialize with friends, and gain benefits from improved balance and strength.
