Hi, I’m Oli!
I’ve been adopted as Alder Hey Children’s
Charity’s new mascot to help raise money for
the exciting new Alder Hey in the Park and to
help celebrate the Hospital’s 100th birthday
in 2014.
I am loyal, strong, caring, wise and like all
elephants, I never forget, which are all the
things that make Alder Hey Children’s
Hospital so special.
My simple round shape is soft and friendly to
represent the warmth of Alder Hey. My large
ears symbolise the hospital’s ability to listen
to young children and their families, whilst my
stitching represents the attention to detail
and the level of care that we provide for each
and every one of our patients.
Keep your eyes peeled for me over the next
few months; I look forward to meeting you
soon!
Oli
Breaking
Ground
Tuesday 26th March was an exciting day for
everyone at Alder Hey as our patron Beth
Tweddle and patients helped us to break the
ground for the new Alder Hey in the Park
and unveiled our countdown clock.
Following the ‘cutting of the sod’, the
countdown clock was switched on in the
Alder Road and Eaton Road entrances.
Beth also visited some of the wards to meet
patients and deliver cake to staff.

Yoko Ono
Becomes
Honorary Patron
of Alder Hey
Children’s Charity
In May we were delighted to welcome Yoko
Ono back to the hospital again where she
pledged her continued support to Alder
Hey by agreeing to become the Honorary
Patron of Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
During a special and memorable visit, Yoko
joined Alder Hey patients and Lady Derby
to create a special piece of music on the
John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. She
then spent time meeting more patients and
families in the hospital’s surgical day case
ward.
Yoko Ono said:
“I am proud to be able to continue to show
my support and become an Honorary
Patron of Alder Hey Children’s Charity. I
have seen first-hand today that Alder Hey
is a special place which does remarkable
things every day for children, young people
and their families. The design of the new
hospital is fabulous and I’m incredibly
excited to be involved in a new exciting
chapter in Alder Hey’s history”.

A Family
Affair
Four year old Freddy Barker is a brave
and inspirational young man. Freddy is
currently undergoing treatment for Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at Alder Hey
Children’s Hospital and his bravery has
inspired not just one, but a host of family
members and friends to undertake numerous
challenges to raise vital funds and awareness
for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

Alder Hey and want to give
something back, please contact us

away aged 38 last year. On 15th September,
on what would have been Paul’s 40th
birthday, Ian will run 38 miles in memory
of each of the years of Paul’s life. The
61km route will start at Bradford Park in
Manchester and finish at the Albert Dock in
Liverpool.
In March, Dad Keith completed the Liverpool
half marathon while Mum Jayne and Aunties
Helen and Rachel have signed up to skydive
in September. Uncle James has also been
busy fundraising and Freddy’s Grandad Nick
completed the Manchester to Blackpool bike
ride in June.
Not to be outdone by their fundraising
heroics, Uncle Ian Barker has organised his
own very special challenge which will both
raise money for Alder Hey and remember a
close friend Paul Aspinall who sadly passed
Freddy
Freddy’s mum Jayne said “Everything in
our world changed on 1st August 2012
when our youngest child Freddy, was
diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic
Leukaemia. Not knowing whether our
son was going to die is something we
will never recover from. But with the help
of the wonderful Alder Hey and staff,
Freddy is a third of the way through his
treatment and is getting stronger every
day. The nurses have looked after our
child, and supported us as a family in a
way that we will be forever grateful, and
that is why we are determined to raise as
much money as we possibly can by way
of saying thank you.”

exploits can visit their JustGiving pages at www.justgiving.com/Ian-Barker2

Oscar’s
Story
In 2012 nine year old Oscar Maclean
from Jersey was diagnosed with a deep
seated malignant brain tumour. The
news was devastating to his family who
after much research discovered that
the tumour was considered to be either
inoperable or that the risk of operating
was too high.
After sending an SOS to their friends
to ask that they send Oscar’s diagnosis
to their medical friends Oscar’s family
discovered that one name kept recurring,
and came to Alder Hey to see leading
neurological consultant Conor Mallucci.
Thanks to the generous support of the
Barclay Foundation, Alder Hey is the
only children’s hospital in Europe with
an intraoperative 3-T MRI scanner, an
essential tool in tricky cases like Oscar’s.
Because of the access to this equipment,
Alder Hey and Mr Mallucci were
confident they could give the operation
a go.
After a marathon 15 hour surgery Oscar
came out without any speech problems
or major deficits, the majority of the
tumour was removed (with exception to
a small area touching mid brain which
cannot be touched) and Oscar has made
a good recovery prior to going for further
oncological treatments.
Oscar’s mum Nara explained, “The
nurses at Alder Hey were amazing,
Oscar was given a large private room
and there was no shortfall in his medical
care at all, an outstanding level of care
indeed. Just what we want for all our
children, should they ever (God forbid)
develop a brain condition.”
Inspired by Oscar, three of Nara’s
friends recently completed the 48 mile
Itex Walk around Jersey and have to
date raised an astonishing £14,396.20
for the Neurosurgical Unit at Alder Hey.
“I would like to thank Alder Hey
for all they have helped me with.
First, I would like to say how lovely
and kind the nurses are, always
trying to make me and everyone
else as happy as possible. Then
the lunch ladies, they were always
smiling and trying to give me the
healthiest meals they could get.
But the person I would like to thank
most is brain surgeon Conor and
his outstanding team of other brain
surgeons. Without them we wouldn’t
have lived another moment of happy
brain peace:)
THANK YOU ALDER HEY!
Love Oscar.

Alder Hey
patients’ VIP
Anfield experience
‘Box4Kids’ scheme was created by Alder
Hey Children’s Charity Patron Barrie Wells
through his own charity the Wells Sports
Foundation. It provides a unique opportunity
for seriously ill and disabled children and
their loved ones to enjoy a VIP day at major
sporting events. ‘Box4Kids’ was initially
launched at Liverpool Football Club in 2010
when Barrie took up a 10 seat executive box
for the exclusive use at every home game
for the benefit of children and young people.
Since then, the success of the scheme has
led to organisations donating corporate boxes
at other football arenas as well as cricket and
rugby stadiums and the initiative is going
from strength to strength.
Last season, 75 of our young patients and
their special guests were lucky enough to
watch Liverpool play at Anfield from the
comfort of an executive box, usually only
available to players and large corporations!
The feedback has been overwhelmingly
positive from patients and their families and
we look forward to inviting new patients next
season!
“The Wells Sports Foundation has a
fabulous partnership with Alder Hey
Children’s Charity… Their passion for the
scheme is clearly born out of the huge
commitment they have to the patients
under the Hospital’s care and they really
want the children to enjoy the occasion
as much as I do… They do an amazing
job and I feel extremely privileged to be
associated with such wonderfully caring
people and the fantastic organisation
that is Alder Hey Children’s Charity.”
Barrie Wells,
Founder Wells Sports Foundation.

Neptune
Collonges
In the build-up to this year’s Grand National,
Alder Hey gave a warm welcome to Neptune
Collonges, 2012 winner of the world famous
steeplechase.
Parading outside the hospital with his trainer
Paul Nicholls and owner John Hales, Neptune
Collonges was also joined by jockeys taking part
in the big race as they made their annual visit to
Alder Hey’s Oncology Unit.
Alder Hey Charity patrons, AP McCoy and
Mick Fitzgerald, and Daryl Jacobs who rode
Neptune Collonges to victory were among the
Jockey’s visiting the Unit.
Mick Fitzgerald said: “I’ve been coming to
Alder Hey for so many years now; it’s become
part of the Grand National experience! When
I was riding, I found the visit particularly
humbling – seeing what the patients and
their families were going through put a real
perspective on things and made me realise
there was more to life than racing! Now I’m a
dad myself it has even more relevance – the
work they do is inspiring!”
David
“David has been visiting Alder Hey
for his care since he was a couple of
weeks old and always looks forward
to his next visit as the staff make the
hospital so pleasant. Now 11, he is
not in any way upset after his visit
and his treatment is always provided
in a lovely way.”
Simon Collins, dad of David.

Friends Groups
Leaving a gift in your will
Why not get together with a few friends and become a
‘Friends of Alder Hey’ group? We’re looking for groups
of supporters to help us build a better future for our
children and grandchildren, and to fundraise for our
new Alder Hey in the Park.
You and your friends may live in a particular geographic
area, be involved in a particular community group or
have a specific interest in common. In return for your
help we will provide dedicated fundraising support,
fundraising resources, cumulative totals for your
fundraising efforts and regular charity updates.
Ambassadors
We are looking for volunteer ambassadors and groups
to help Alder Hey celebrate 100 years of providing
remarkable care to millions of children, whilst raising
more money to ensure that every child has the best
care and experience every day. We need people who
are friends and supporters of Alder Hey Children’s
Hospital, and who can be the face of the hospital in
their communities.
In 2014 Alder Hey Children’s
Hospital will celebrate its 100th
birthday. While we will be looking
back and celebrating a century
of outstanding care and research,
we will also be looking forward
to the future and the next 100
years for our young patients here
at Alder Hey.
By leaving a gift to Alder Hey
Children’s Charity in your will
you can be part of our future
and help to look after future
generations of your loved ones.
