References 36 LG3 The visual environment for display use Lighting Guide LG3 (1996) and LG3 Addendum (2001) address lighting for visual function and the wider issue of lighting for visual amenity in environments where display screen equipment is to be used. LG3 Addendum (2001) should be read in conjunction with LG3 (1996). It serves to reinforce the importance of visual amenity in lighting installations through its guidance on acceptable ratios of room surface illuminance to task illuminance and to update LG3 (1996) by addressing new developments in display screen and software technology. Taken from the forward of LG3 (1996) “There has been a worrying emphasis amongst some designers and users of the previous edition of this Lighting Guide on selecting luminaires purely on their ability to reduce screen reflections, without paying due attention to potential problems that this may cause to the general visual environment in the area. Because of this greater emphasis has been given to the overall visual environment in this new lighting guide.” Key design requirements of LG3 (1996) and LG3 Addendum (2001) Lighting for visual amenity • A good luminance balance should be achieved within a space by considering the finish of its surfaces and the light distribution onto them. • A balanced luminance pattern should be achieved across the individual surfaces of a space. • The general visual impression of gloom, deep shadows and harsh modeling etc should be avoided. Lighting for visual function • Attention should be paid to downlighter-screen-eye geometry in avoiding distracting reflections. • Direct glare, particularly problematic in peripheral vision, should be avoided. • Satisfactory task illuminance and uniformity should be provided. • Luminaire surface luminance should be matched with screen and software characteristics. This brochure contains a selection of the luminaries offered by TRILUX that through appropriate design-planning can help to meet the requirements of LG3 (1996) and LG3 Addendum (2001). 1 LG3 Light and people Quality criteria and definitions as to lighting have been determined in current standards – e.g. for the lighting of working facilities in BS EN 12464 – aimed at the necessary visual performance for the most different visual tasks. Substantial quality criteria for this are: • lighting level, • glare limitation, • balanced luminance relations and • colour rendering quality of the used lamps. Considerable criteria going beyond the purely visual function such as • visual perception, • mood, • sense of well-being, • acceptance, • capability to perform are not described in European standards, even though these criteria contribute to lighting quality and to safety and health at the workplace considerably. It is known that daylight has influenced the human evolution decisively. Because of the natural day-night-rhythm the human organism has been adapted to a 24-hour day, the so-called “Circadian Rhythm”. Parallel to the 24-hour bright-dark-rhythm, endogenous hormones such as cortisol and melatonin are produced or repressed and body functions such as vigilance as well as the body temperature are controlled. A disturbed circadian rhythm, e.g. by too low illuminances on the retina during the day phase can have a negative influence on the human psyche, capability to perform and well-being. Lighting quality depends on the one hand on the light which controls the visual performance from the anterior brain as “optical part of the visual pathway” and thus secures the accomplishment of the visual task, and on the other hand on the light which influences the hormonal functions, i.e. the non-visual effects by means of the hypophysis as “energetic part of the visual pathway”. The Lighting Guide 3 with the addendum 2001 refers to health-relating aspects of light and to the accordance of statements as to the “health and safety regulations”. In addition to the quality criteria of lighting to accomplish the visual task, other demands focus on the relations of the ceiling and wall illuminances to the horizontal illuminance. These relations guarantee a bright and pleasant atmosphere in the user’s field of vision and therefore contribute to the acceptance and the sense of well-being, thus positively influencing the psyche. 2 3 LG3 LG3 solutions Solution 1/suspended direct/indirect luminaires Suspended direct/indirect luminaires feature pleasing aesthe- 1 tics and offer optimum photometric characteristics to create low energy lighting solutions that will achieve the light distribution requirements of LG3 in cellular and open plan environments. They are best suited to spaces with floor-to-ceiling heights of 2.7 m and above. Solution 2/ surface-mounted direct/indirect luminaires Surface-mounted direct/indirect luminaires retain the 2 desirable aesthetics and photometric characteristics of suspended direct/indirect luminaires and in addition can be used in environments with lower floor-to-ceiling heights. This luminaire type can achieve the light distribution requirements of LG3 in both cellular and open plan environments but will achieve a less uniform light pattern across a ceiling than suspended direct/indirect solutions. Solution 3/semi-recessed luminaires Semi-recessed luminaires offer less visual and physical incursion into a space than both suspended and surfacemounted direct/indirect luminaires. They are easy to install into ceiling grid arrangements and can be advantageous when designing lighting for spaces with lower floor-to-ceiling heights. These luminaires can achieve the light distribution requirements of LG3 in both cellular and open plan environments but in some instances require favourable room surface and furniture finishes. 4 3 Solution 4/recessed luminaires 4 Recessed luminaires offer a lighting solution that makes no physical incursion into a space resulting in clean architectural lines. This type of luminaire has advantages from both an aesthetic and an air movement point of view. Recessed luminaires are easy to install into ceiling grid arrangements and can be advantageous when designing lighting for spaces with lower floor-to-ceiling heights. They can achieve the light distribution requirements of LG3 in both cellular and open plan environments if room surface and furniture finishes are favourable. Visually lit elements of recessed luminaires can also combine with reflected light to give the perception of a lit ceiling/space irrespective of room and surface finishes. Solution 5/single point solution 5 TRILUX has developed a single point solution for open-plan office spaces with 600 mm square ceiling grids to address the requirements of LG3. Although correct planning is essential and the use of this fitting in itself does not ensure conformity, this luminaire does represent a simple to plan and cost effective to install single point solution to the requirements of LG3 tailored to the needs of much of the UK lighting market. 6 7 Solution 6/CAT II upgrade Traditional direct distribution recessed luminaires can be utilised in conjunction with indirect wall-mounted luminaires to achieve the light distribution requirements of LG3 if the geometry of a space facilitates it. Solution 7/ASTRON The ASTRON range of luminaires unites cutting edge lighting technology with an innovative form and photometric concept. The luminaires within this range can be combined harmoniously or they can be used independently to offer a dynamic and interesting means of tackling the requirements of LG3. 5 LG3 Solution 1/suspended direct/indirect luminaires 5261 RSX The 5261 RSX suspended range of luminaires is a technically effective and aesthetically pleasing lighting solution for open plan and cellular environments with sufficiently high floor-to-ceiling heights. Technical advantages: Existing installations can be retained and visually/ photometrically upgraded by the introduction of indirect lighting elements. Technical limitations: Light planning using the combination of direct lighting louver luminaires and indirect luminaires requires favourable room geometry. Either a space itself must be small enough to facilitate light thrown across the ceiling from wall mounted luminaires or a space must have favourably sited columns onto which luminaires can be mounted. Aesthetic features Combining direct and indirect lighting in a space produces visual diversity and holds great potential to create interesting and amenably lit environments. 26 C 0 - C 180 C 0 - C 180 Degree of protection IP 20 Degree of protection IP 20 Safety class Safety class I I CIBSE BZ BZ 1 CIBSE BZ BZ 6 LOR 0.67 LOR 0.52 Certific.
