BOTANICS
Linen, which is made from flax, is the oldest textile material
in the world. Its history goes back to many thousand of
years. Fragments of straw, seeds, fibres, yarns and various
types of fabrics which date back to about 8000 before J.C.
have been found in Swiss lake dwellings. Linen was used in
the Mediterranean in the pre-Christian age. Linen was
sometimes used as currency in ancient Egypt. Egyptian
mummies were wrapped in linen because it was seen as a
symbol of light and purity, and as a display of wealth.
Currently most flax produced are seed flax types for the
production of linseed oil or flaxseeds for human nutrition as
well as for cosmetics.
Till now almost unknown for its soothing properties, the flax
flower presents a new interesting raw material for skin care
applications.
Linum alpinum is a flowering plant of the family Linaceae, native in the Alps. It is a
slender herbaceous perennial growing to 30 cm tall, with spirally arranged narrow
lanceolate leaves. The flowers are blue, 16-25 mm in diameter, with five petals. Found
in nature at altitudes till 1700m, Linum alpinum ‘s blooming period extends from May to
August.
Linum alpinum L. is cultivated in the Alps for the needs of ALPAFLOR®.
TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
Line seeds are rich in fats, proteins, fibres, fibrils and vitamins and can therefore be used for
the therapy of chronic obstructive disorders and as dietary supplement.
ORGANIC CULTIVATION certified by BIO.SUISSE
ALPAFLOR® has developed its own plant cultures in collaboration with Swiss alpine farmers
who have over 20 years of experience in this field. This production fits into the philosophy of
maintaining an economic activity profitable to mountain farmers, preserving natural sites and
rare plants, supporting the alpine biodiversity and retaining our alpine plant heritage.
The 100% organic culture methods used (no pesticides, mineral fertilizers or herbicides) are
guaranteed by the Bio-Swiss seal of approval.

EFFICACY
in vitro Tests
Induction of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) expression in the epidermis is felt to
be an important initiator of keratinocyte interactions in many inflammatory skin diseases.
Human keratinocytes during the course of inflammatory dermatoses strongly express the
surface molecule ICAM-1.
Accordingly, ICAM-1 expression is known to be induced in vivo and in vitro by cytokines
either via the TNF alpha/TNF beta or via the IFN gamma-mediated pathway.
The efficacy of ALPAFLOR® LINUM AO was demonstrated by an in vitro test measuring its
ICAM-1 expression reducing effect on human keratinocytes stimulated by Interferon-γ.

ALPAFLOR® LINUM AO has shown its capacity to reduce the inflammatation of
keratinocytes dose dependently:
by 11% at a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml;
by 31% at a concentration of 5mg/ml.
ALPAFLOR® LINUM AO reduces the skin inflammation reactions by decreasing the
production of ICAM-1.
ALPAFLOR® LINUM AO is especially intended for skin care products that target irritated or
sensitive skin.
