A number of visitors were seen walking up and down the path barefoot to gain health benefits. Heavy crowds amidst protests at Chennai Book Fair The 38th Chennai Book Fair is witnessing huge crowds. G. Olivannan (Treasurer, BAPASI) said that the crowd this year surpassed the usual turnout by 25 per cent. Bharadan, a resident of West Mambalam, said that he visits the exhibition every year with a ready list of books he wants to purchase. “I am looking at buying more than 25 novels and short stories by various popular authors this year,” he added. Some of the attractions this year include Iyalvaagai (the organic book stall setup by VaanagamNammalwar Ecological Foundation) with its name written in green on handmade cloth and paper. Apart from books, it is also selling traditional toys like ‘Giligiluppai’ made with organic materials and organically grown seeds of house plants. The online leftist activist group Maattru (maattru.com) staged a protest against banning the display and sale of the controversial novel ‘Madorubhagan’ written by Perumal Murugan. The group wore black masks and distributed pamphlets to visitors and also claimed that the police came and attempted to disrupt their peaceful protest by snatching leaflets and tearing them up. The group also alleged that a couple of its leaders were detained in Mambalam Police Station before being released. Stall owners said that after the protest, the demand for the novel increased and the entire stock was sold within two days. The fair concludes on Jan. 21. Grandson Manu had, after shrugging off a hard day’s work at office, walked a mile in freezing minus 16 degrees cold from New York to catch a train to New Jersey where he shares a room with an Indian friend. Outside the block he saw a forlorn Indian, nearly frozen in the ideal weather, trying to wake up the chap in the upper storey by methods known to civilazationlike phone calls a dozen times followed by heavy tapping on the door, none of which produced the expected response. After a fifteen minute muscle work was unproductive, except for a sweat shower, Manu suspected that either the chap or his quarry was in trouble. So he invited the stranger to his one room palace and asked him the reason for the nasty evening show. Obviously the stranger was an innocent in that part of Obamaland and the single suitcase that he was carrying told the story that he had just landed in that country. Of course he was an Indian, a raw one, who was lured by the magic stories. Who wouldn’t be? Young, educated and dreaming of riches and a swagger in his walk, the universal trade mark on the educated young in the fabulous land of the digital revolution, he had lost his other suitcase which he had kept in a taxi. Manu the young digital genius had his feet firmly grounded while retaining his innate wealth of character that is attuned to the service of others when required. He invited the youngster to his room and proposed an immediate dash to New York airport where the young chap had caught the taxi that dumped him at Manu’s address. This fellow, on the verge of tears, had, when he landed in New York, a suitcase of clothes, a portfolio of his papersfor study in a University and other sheaf of papers and of course his passport and visa. He was now devoid of those papers! After a second innings of weeping, Manu said there was no point wasting further time and they sped to the New York airport breaking all speed limits. The airport police hummed and hawed but could offer no help. All that the chap remembered was that the car was a black one, in which case, the airport police officer said, it was an unauthorised one. Great helpthat intelligence was! As the chap was contemplating the mode of his exit from this world, Manu saw a blacktaxi entering the airport grounds. They typhooned to the spot and, with the anxious collaboration of the taxi driver, found the treasure in the luggage boot. They were all innocent. Manu has earned a friend for life!
