This story (that I am borrowing) illustrates the importance of keeping the main thing – the main thing. A teacher stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty pickle jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. Next the teacher picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. Church Staff Rev. David Tinsley Pastor Michael Ackland Treasurer Jim Barker Director of Ministry Care Joy H. Breedlove Administrative Assistant & Newsletter Editor, Organist Pam Leslie Director of Music Angela Holloway Pianist Tonya Page Nursery Supervisor YHC Interns Logan Gray Monica Lewis Then the teacher picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous, "Yes." "Now," said the teacher, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things – God, your family, your church, your health, your friends, ‒ things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, you would still enjoy life. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your bills and your taxes. Now the sand is everything else - the small stuff." "If you put the sand into the jar first", he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important in life. Always keep before you those precious things that are vital to you as a human being and do them. Then do the things that have to be done to be a member of society. The rest is just sand." Or as Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) For the Kingdom, ~DT January Communion Offering Our January Communion Offering will go to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. This is our “Benevolence” or “Good Samaritan” fund, used to help people who turn to the church seeking financial aid for various physical needs such as utilities, medical bills, etc. The poor and needy are all around us—in our community, our nation, and the world. This month, let’s help meet needs in our own local area, though the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. Sharp Scholars! Congratulations to our seven Sharp Scholars for 2015! Update For our position of Director of Christian Education, a subcommittee of the Staff Parish Relations Committee interviewed 3 people, none of whom had any experience in Christian Education, as the Job Description requires. After the interviews, we came to the conclusion to postpone making a decision about the position at this time. The Job Description of the position was created about 15 years ago, and we have decided to spend the next 6 months in examining and evaluating the needs of our church.
