Focus on... Security
Mobile Phone Security !
Nowadays it’s probably more
worrying if someone steals
your phone than your purse
because of the amount of
data stored on it: bank,
Facebook, Twitter, and
Amazon accounts, are the
tip of the iceberg.
Your first line of defence is
to make it hard for thieves
to get into the phone.
Make sure you’ve got your
phone lock turned on so
that they have to enter your
password. If you’re using a
pattern or pin code to unlock
the phone make sure it’s not
something simple like 1234
or a rectangle.
SIM cards can be switched
to another phone and used
to run up bills of thousands
of pounds. Notify your
provider as soon as you
realise your phone is missing. A delay may mean
that you incur unnecessary
charges. Although phone
companies are being exhorted to cap the amount of
liability a customer incurs if
their phone is misused, at
the time of writing this is not
commonplace. Make sure
your SIM is locked, as well
as your handset, and check
with your provider to see if
you can voluntarily place a
cap on your usage; that way,
the phone will cut out once
the limit is reached.
8 8 The Ringwood Focus
Switch your location service
on. Your phone will then be
able to tell you where it is.
Apple, Android and other
major systems all have online phone location websites.
You can locate and lock the
phone, make it ring or even
wipe it.
Mobile phones, like laptops
are open to hackers. In
general phones are more
secure from virus attacks,
but you still need to be wary
of criminals. Virus attacks
on phones mostly occur
via dodgy apps. Apple are
very strict about what is
allowed into iTunes so virus
protection isn’t an issue. On
Android devices you need
to be more careful. Read
reviews carefully and check
the permissions the app
requests when you install it.
If it’s a simple app asking for
full access to your phone, it
should ring alarm bells. If in
doubt don’t install. Most of
the major security companies produce Android apps
to give you an extra level of
security. Install one of these
to give you extra peace of
mind.
Remember, when your
phone connects to a Wi-Fi
hotspot all the information it
sends and receives passes
through the computer
controlling that hotspot.
Always be aware of who
owns the hotspot and how
much you trust them. Most
data, like bank logins and
other major services, are
highly encrypted so they
can’t be stolen. However,
other websites you use will
not be as secure and may
allow your login details to
be hi-jacked. Check that the
website or app you are using
is secure (look for a little
padlock icon) before you
type in your details, especially card details. If in any
doubt, don’t use it.
Phone security is mostly
about being aware of the
problem and using common sense. If you follow
the steps above, then even
if you do lose your phone,
it shouldn’t cause you any
serious issues.

Rotary Club of Ringwood
Ringwood Rotary Wish Week
The following story, inspired by
Pam Galton - Jessica’s mum,
touched the heart of the members
of Ringwood Rotary Club so
much so that they were happy to
present Jessica with a cheque for
£250 to help towards a dream of
her lifetime. Having survived so
much trauma with her own health
problems she now wishes to visit
Borneo to give others some of the
love she has received over here.
Jessica had walking issues as
a small child and walked on her
toes, she had to endure numerous splints and endless physio to
try and correct this, she even had
botox injections into her muscle to
relax it but this was not successful. She then had two operations
to lengthen her tendons, the last
one being three years ago which,
fingers crossed, has proved to
be successful, but she still has to
do various exercises every day
to make sure her muscles are
stretched. Last year she became
very ill and, after numerous blood
tests, it was discovered that she
had glandular fever. She also had
a swelling in the side of her neck,
which didn’t go. After various
scans we were told that she had
a cyst in her neck, it turned out to
be a bronchial cyst, which had become infected; this was operated
on just prior to her GCSE exams
this year. She is hoping to get into
Ringwood 6th Form, but is also
fundraising to go on a trip of a lifetime to Borneo for a month. We
are doing lots of boot sales and
fundraising; she has a little cakebaking round, but would welcome
any input no matter how little.
She would grow in confidence
from this trip as well as help the
local people with whom she would
be living and working alongside, in
a wide range of initiatives to help
improve their living standards.
This is being arranged through
Ringwood School and Camps
International, who are based in
Ringwood and there follows some
more information about the trip.
Volunteering in Borneo is an
incredible experience. You’ll be
living and working alongside local
people on a wide range of initiatives designed to help improve
living standards within their
community. All of our projects are
based in the Malaysian state of
Sabah, which has the highest rate
of poverty throughout Malaysia.
Many of the rural people we work
with are living in poverty and don’t
have access to clean, reliable
water. More than 20% of Sabah
children have never attended
school due to lack of proper
primary education facilities, and
the traditions and cultures of rural
communities are being eroded at
an alarming rate.

Focus on... Gardening
Seeds of Change !
How many seeds have you
eaten today? Probably
more than you realise. As a
nation, we consume tons of
them every day and whether
they are ground to make our
bread, mushed to accompany
our chips or sprinkled on our
burger bun, seeds play an
important role in our diet …
as well as in our garden!
Most of the seed heads that
were left over from autumn
have now fallen over,
disintegrated, or been eaten
by hungry birds, so as part of
my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m
cutting them down to ground
level before the new growth
begins to emerge next month.
The stately seed heads of
Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of
time, as did the erect stems of
Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’,
but even these have been
defeated by the wind.
It may be cold outside, but
now is the perfect time for
planning what to grow this
year, from seed of course!
Over recent years the
popularity of growing your
own vegetables has meant
that veg seed sales have
overtaken those of traditional
flowers, but you really can’t
beat the satisfaction of plants
from seed.
the instructions for sowing
and placed them on top of
my wardrobe (I’m not quite
sure why I did that). What
happened next really was a
miracle. They germinated! It
was hard to believe that the
old seed, uneven layer of
compost, wardrobe location
and over watered soil,
produced a rash of new
seedlings. It wasn’t long
before they had grown to
around 2 inches high and bent
towards the light, narrowly
avoiding the artex ceiling!
I potted them on and they
produced the most beautiful
range of colours all summer long, and that was the
moment I became hooked on
gardening.
It wasn’t really a surprise that
they germinated, as that’s
what seeds are designed to
do. They can survive in their
dormant state for years, and
because there are often more
seeds per packet than you
know what to do with, I always
sow just a few more than I
need and return the rest to a
sealed container in the fridge.
Stored like this they keep for
years.
To give them the best start
in life, most seeds require
just a tray of compost and
some warmth. Large seeds
should be covered over with
compost, but small seeds left
uncovered as they often don’t
have enough energy to push
new leaves through the soil.
Prick out singly once large
enough to handle and grow on
somewhere frost-free, before
gradually hardening off ready
for life outdoors.
Until next time, happy winter
gardening.
Lee Bestall
The first plants I ever grew
were Snap Dragons. I was
fifteen, and I found the packet
in the back of a drawer (presumably they had been stuck
to a box of cereal at some
stage). I diligently followed

A special antiques and collectables valuation
event will be taking place soon. The experts of
Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free
valuations on Monday 19th January, 12pm
mid-day to 4pm, at The Greyfriars Community
Centre, 44 Christchurch Road, Ringwood,
Hampshire, BH24 1DW.
Valuations will be available for the following types
of collectables: Coins (including British & World,
sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals
& militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery,
gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps,
cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting
programmes & tickets, scientific instruments,
swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No
appointment necessary.
Members of the public will have the option, if they
wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject
to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are
also available. Valuations will be provided free of
charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated
catalogues from previous auctions will be given
away on a complimentary basis in order for the
public to get a better idea of the services available.
These valuation days have proven to be very
popular in the past, and we have conducted
hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the
best items we have auctioned were brought to
us at these events, such as two pieces of
Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a
bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on
behalf of the owners for over £75,000.
One of the most interesting items to turn up at
one of our events was a fragment of pennant
flag believed to have been carried by the army
of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This
was featured on television, and in newspapers
nationwide, and we auctioned it on behalf of the
family for £2800. It was nice to handle a historic
item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very
well also!)

All veterinary surgeons undergo a broad based training in veterinary medicine and surgery for a
minimum of 5 years before qualifying. Recognised specialist veterinary surgeons must undergo
extensive addi•onal training for a minimum of 4 years and pass rigorous Diploma examina•ons
before they can become specialists. Veterinary specialists work in much the same way
as specialists or consultants in human medicine and only accept cases that are referred
to them by general prac••oners. Unfortunately in the UK the •tle of specialist is not
protected and any veterinary surgeon can claim exper•se in a par•cular field, adver•se that
they accept referrals and even call themselves a specialist.
In the UK the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) which is the governing
body for the veterinary profession has laid down strict criteria concerning training and
experience required to gain "recognised" specialist status. Recognised specialists must
have appropriate postgraduate qualifica•ons and demonstrate that they are ac•vely
involved with their discipline and up to date with recent advances. RCVS specialist status
must be re-accredited every 5 years and is not easily achieved. To view the veterinary
qualifica•ons needed to be included on the list of recognised specialists visit the Royal
College of Veterinary Surgeons website: www.rcvs.org.uk
At SCVS all our clinicians have undergone extensive postgraduate training and are
either recognised RCVS or European specialists or are in the process of obtaining
advanced qualifica•ons that will lead to specialist status in the future.
Recognised specialists have much greater knowledge, experience and exper•se in their
discipline than general prac••oners or Cer•ficate holders. In addi•on clinicians working in referral centres have access to specialised diagnos•c and therapeu•c equipment and
facili•es that are not available in general prac•ce. As one of the few truly mul•disciplinary referral centres in the UK our pa•ents benefit from the wide spectrum of
exper•se offered by our team of specialists in different disciplines all under one roof.

Focus on... New Year Resolutions
What’s your Goal?
Many of us use the New Year as a time
to plan ahead and set goals or
resolutions. What would you like to
2015 and how would you
achieve in 2014,
like your life to be different?
It’s possible to set goals for most areas
of life: - health, career, social life,
relationships and finance for instance.
Or you might look at the different roles
you play, such as wife, friend, mother,
employer, and use your thoughts about
how you could improve your success
in those roles to help determine your
goals.
Only you can decide what
would really make a positive
difference to your life, and
you are most likely to
succeed if you select goals
that really matter to you.
There is less chance of
success if you are trying to
achieve something because
another person wants you
to.
Indeed some New Year’s
resolutions only last a few
days. To make a lasting
change it’s important to
make sure your goals are
realistic, and to seek
motivation, inspiration and
support to help you stay on
track.
Do not set yourself too many
goals or set targets way
beyond your reach, as you
will soon become disheartened and less likely to
2020The Ringwood Focus
succeed. It’s better to set
smaller goals that you can
add to, or increase if things
go well, and build on your
positive results
Some people like to write
their goals down or share
them with others, and this
can add to the accountability
that individuals feel around
goal setting, thus improving
their chances of success.
It can also be useful to ask
for support from friends, who
can give you gentle reminders if you are in danger
of going off track. Where
relevant, you may also want
to get inspiration, advice and
training from others such as
weight loss experts, sports
trainers or personal and
career coaches.
Other useful tools include
imagery – this might be
visualising yourself
having achieved your goals,
or sticking photographs
which represent success to
your fridge door or mirror.
You might also find the use
of quotes, role models and
affirmations useful. An
affirmation is a statement
which says what you are
aiming for in a positive way,
and in the present tense. It
helps to imprint positive
beliefs on your subconscious.
Finally, don’t forget to
congratulate yourself
when you do achieve
success. Break your goals
down into manageable
steps, and celebrate by
rewarding yourself at each
milestone.

FALLS PREVENTION WORKSHOPS
Steady and stronger for longer
Steady and Strong exercise classes are taught by qualified postural stability instructors, who have
been specifically trained to help reduce falls in older people. The classes are suitable for any older
person in Hampshire who has had or who is worried about having a fall, has decreased mobility or
has trouble with their balance. The aim of the classes is to keep people on their feet to help them
stay independent. The classes also link in with the NHS led fall prevention classes and provide a
follow on for people completing their rehabilitation. The classes last for an hour and are run in a
friendly atmosphere and usually close with the opportunity for a chat over a cup of tea. The prices
vary from £3 - £3.50 per session.
Classes in Ringwood are led by experienced Postural Stability Instructor Gilly Ostler and are at
Quaker Court on Thursday at 10.100am and 11.00am.
For more information or to book on a class for the first time contact Gilly Ostler on: 07817 233 707

ENERGY THERAPY REIKI
Instead of telling you about how Reiki works, I
thought it best to let my clients tell you about their
experiences and how it has helped them...
Jackie Howchin
Wow! Today I had my first ever Reiki session and I chose to use Jackie. As we all know, things happen
for a reason so maybe I was supposed to meet her ... and what a fabulous person she is. Everything
was explained to me in very clear and fine detail so that it could be easily understood. The actual
session itself was exhilarating. Jackie does not jump straight into the reiki part … she discusses everything and gets to the root of the issue. She is kind and sensitive and allows you to fully open up with
any concerns or issues you have. Jackie is more than a reiki practitioner. She is more of a life guide /
coach. Jackie is a pillar of strength and I am really looking forward to working with her to improve every
area of my life. Thank you Jackie … just for being you. xx
Sarah – Bournemouth
I was referred to Jackie by a relative who had also been suffering from anxiety and stress. I had already
seen the amazing effect that Jackie had on her, and I decided to try Reiki for myself. After just one
session I felt so much more positive and confident. Jackie has a wonderful ability to make you feel like
she has all the time in the world for you, and puts you at ease instantly. I’m so privileged to have met
her and would highly recommend Reiki with her to anyone.
Laurie – Bournemouth
I came to see Jackie a year on from a gruelling divorce and exhausted from the rigours of single parenting two daughters. I had survived, but I was incredibly weary and still very angry. As someone who is
a ‘coper’ and who usually gets through life with grim determination and a breezy ‘i’m fine’, I recognised
that I hadn’t processed many of my feelings and the tools I was used to using i.e. my head, just weren’t
working for me any more. Therefore I turned to Reiki as a means of bypassing my head and working
with myself at an energetic level. I was sceptical that it would make any kind of difference and half
expected it to be a nice relaxation but nothing more. After the first session however, I experienced a
profound shift in my feelings. I felt, lighter, freer, more full of love and gratitude for my life and my daughters, less stressed and considerably more open. Thank you Jackie for the very intuitive, loving gift that
you have. I will also be bringing my daughters to you soon.
Anna - Alderholt
My husband died of cancer and I was a lost soul with no direction. I saw Jackie's advert and thought
why not. With the correct presence of mind we are capable of doing anything and Jackie restored my
confidence and want to join the world again. From the first session I was relaxed and Jackie has the
capability to make you feel like your the only person who is important. She listens and cares for her
clients with a true passion. The power of positive thought is a wonderful state of mind and with Jackie's
help I have achieved not only direction but also a desire for life. I will never stop missing my husband
but with Reiki and Jackie I can now face the world with my head held high. The deep relaxation is an all
consuming therapy and very enjoyable. We should all have a Jackie in our lives.
Judith - Ringwood
Jackie is incredibly warm and genuine and made me feel comfortable and relaxed straight away (which
isn’t easy for me!). She is insightful and understanding and has really helped me make such quick progress in a really short time. Her passion for Reiki is infectious. I’m so pleased I’ve met her and benefited
from her positive influence!
Lauren - New Forest
“Thank you is not enough … but it’s the only words I have. Thank you for making me feel unbroken and
unblocked. Thank you for your fantastic words of encouragement. Thank you! You are a beautiful
soul, inside and out. I hope you see what I can see – and that you realise just how much you are worth.
I am so blessed to know you. THANK YOU!”

Focus on... Diets
To Eat or Not to Eat ... that is the Question !
The United Kingdom has the
third highest level of obese
and overweight people in
Western Europe, with nearly a
third of adults and more than
a quarter of children fitting into
this category. The statistics
are worrying, especially as
obesity increases the risk
of heart disease, stroke,
diabetes, cancer and other
diseases.
So, what is making us fat and
what can we do about it? Put
simply, we put weight on when
we consume more calories
than we use. This could be
due to portion size or the type
of food we eat. Foods rich in
sugar or fat contain the most
calories and are most likely to
make us gain weight.
It’s New Year, and many of us
will make the decision to lose
weight, but what is the best
way to tackle it?
to the habits that caused
them to gain weight in the first
place. This is particularly true
for people who lose weight
quickly.
No doubt just about any diet
can help you lose weight, but
the real test is: which one can
help you keep it off?
Over the years there have
been various diets - the high
fibre, high protein, high carb,
grapefruit, cabbage soup and
meal replacement diets to
name a few. But increasingly,
evidence suggests that the
most effective way to lose and
maintain weight loss is not to
follow a ‘diet’ at all, but to
simply make changes to
eating habits that can be
sustained for life.
of us than we can realistically
give for a prolonged period.
Eating regimes that deny us
all the things we enjoy, that
leave us feeling hungry and a
social outcast on nights out,
will inevitably cause us to
revolt at some point and turn
back to old ways.
Becoming better educated,
learning new habits, taking
responsibility for our choices,
continuing to live a normal life
and losing weight gradually at
around 1-2 lbs per week will,
in the long run, produce the
best chances of permanent
success at the scales.
Good luck as you take the first
step to becoming a slimmer
and healthier you!
Diets don’t generally work
because they demand more
There are numerous diets,
aids, supplements and slimming clubs out there, some
promising amazing results.
You’ve seen the adverts about
people who have lost six
stones in as many months and
are feeling great! It’s tempting to want to shift the excess
pounds as quickly as possible,
to get the business of dieting
over with, and get back to
normal life again.
The sad fact is that the vast
majority of people who lose
weight put it back on again,
and this is because once the
weight is lost, they do return
to ‘normal’ by reverting back

A few thoughts to ponder on...
No man or woman is worth your tears, &
the one who is, won’t make you cry.
Just because someone doesn’t love you
the way you want them to, doesn’t mean
they don’t love you with all they have.
A true friend is someone who reaches for
your hand & touches your heart.
The worst way to miss someone
is to be sitting right beside them
knowing you can’ t have them.
Never frown, even when you are sad,
because you never know who is falling in
love with your smile.
To the world you may be one person, but to
one person you may be the world.
Don’t waste your time on someone, who
isn’t willing to waste their time on you.
Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong
people before meeting the right one, so that
when we finally meet the person, we will
know how to be grateful.
