welcomes Shelley Popke as the new Executive Director starting January 1st, 2015. Shelley will replace Glo Cunningham,
the previous Executive Director for the past eleven years. Glo
will continue working at the CB Museum as the Outreach

done the past year.
Shelley previously worked as the Store Manager

worked as Special Assistant to the Dean for Development

KBUT ANNOUNCES
INAUGURAL SNOW BALL
KBUT Community Radio is hosting its inaugural
Snow Ball on Friday, January 23 at Elk Ave Prime (formerly
Maxwell’s) in Crested Butte. Enjoy an evening of fine dining,
live music, dancing and a silent auction. The Snow Ball starts
at 6:00 p.m. with appetizers followed by a three course plated dinner with several menu options.
“We’re very excited about the event,” says KBUT
General Manager Eileen Hughes. “The idea is get to get a little dressed up, enjoy a gourmet dinner and kick up your
heels to celebrate the winter. We’re encouraging folks to
wear snow inspired attire or Crested Butte fancy, however
people want to define that.”
Hughes said KBUT events are always fun and the
“Snow Ball should appeal to folks looking for a fun night out
that’s not too late in the evening.”
The Snow Ball features Mike Clark and the Sugar
Sounds from Colorado Springs who will perform immediately after dinner. The eight member group is fronted by songwriter Mike Clark.
The band delivers a style steeped in rock ’n roll suffused with soul. Songs like “I Can’t Shake It” and “Losing My
Cool” reference the greats of soul and rock’n’roll, from Otis
Redding to Creedence Clearwater Revival, “It sounds like
something completely new, but it will remind you of all the
best old songs,” Clark says. “It’s all about girls, sadness and
heartbreak, but it gets people to dance.”
The dinner menu includes a variety of appetizers,
soup or salad, a choice of entrees including: Pan seared day
boat swordfish with horseradish mashed potatoes and oven
roasted vegetables, Kona crusted bistro fillet with cheddar
mashed potatoes and oven roasted vegetables, vegetarian
pasta with marsala sauce, and for dessert either white chocolate Grand Marnier bread pudding with crème anglais and
salted caramel sauce or Butterfinger crème brulee.
Tickets for the Snow Ball are $75 each and are
available online at KBUT.org or at the KBUT Studios at 508
Maroon Avenue in Crested Butte. For more information call
970-349-5225 or visit KBUT.org to see the menu and a video
performance of Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds.

LONG-TERM GMUG
EMPLOYEES RETIRE
With the turn-over of the New Year, the Grand
Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests offers
its congratulations on retirement to four employees who
have worked for many years to serve the public and manage
forest resources. Congratulations to all…
Mark Hatcher, Range Conservationist on the
Gunnison Ranger District, retired after 35 years of federal
service. He started his career with the Bureau of Land
Management and transferred to the Forest Service’s Little
Missouri National Grasslands after 3 years. He has worked
on the GMUG NFS for the past 24 years leading the range
program for the District and working in fire management.
Mr. Hatcher is a Deputy Incident Commander in wildland
fire and will continue to serve in that capacity with the West
Metro Fire and Rescue Department in his retirement. He is
proud of the work he did and the achievements he accomplished in his tenure, including assisting with the reintroduction of moose and Canada lynx and his work with, “a lot
of good folks and good memories over the past 24 years.” He
hopes to do more skiing and hockey and “play more” in his
free time.
Leigh Ann Hunt retired as the Forest Archaeologist
after 34 years of federal service. She worked on the GMUG
for the past 14 years, after previously working in Utah,
California and Nevada. She plans to stay in the Delta area
and to continue to work on historic projects that “peak her
interest.” In looking back on her accomplishments, Ms.
Hunt is most proud of her work to stabilize historic structures, including the Trout Lake Trestle, Fairview Lookout
(near Pitkin), Pie Plant Cabins (above Taylor Park) and the
Neosho Mine (above Ouray) and her work with the public
and partners on digs, surveys and Passport in Time projects.
In retirement, she hopes to have more time for camping,
playing and spending time with family and friends in addition to more archaeological work.
Barry Johnston, Forest Botanist working out of the
Gunnison Ranger District, retired after 39.5 years of federal
service. His work included serving in the Southwest Regional
Office (Albuquerque, NM) and the Rocky Mountain
Regional Office (Denver, CO) and then out of the Gunnison
Service Center and Ranger District. He has worked on the
GMUG for the past 25 years and his proud accomplishments
include researching and publishing papers on: Ecological
Types of the Upper Gunnison Basin (2001); Fen Inventory of
the GMUG (2012); and Fire Effects Study of the West Side of
the Uncompahgre Plateau (2006-2012). In retirement, Mr.
Johnston plans to do more work with his church, more
singing, travelling to visit family, home repairs, field botany
and perhaps write a book or two.
Linda Schmidt has been a dedicated and helpful
employee on the GMUG for 27.5 years and providing public
service in the federal government for 34.5 years. Her work
background includes working for Housing and Urban
Development, as an archaeological illustrator and work as a
cartographer in Forest Planning. She retired as the Property
Management Specialist for the GMUG in January. During
her career, she provided a variety of support and expertise to
the Forest and served on several details to other Forest
Service Regions to train and audit property management
specialists and to establish national protocols. One of which
was following “9/11” to Washington D.C. which she
described as very enlightening and interesting in the aftermath. In retirement, she hopes to get back into her artwork,
spend more time with family, travel and be more active in
church activities.

PUBLIC HEALTH OFFERS A
FREE PROGRAM TO HELP
PREGNANT WOMEN STOP
SMOKING CIGARETTES. It is
called Baby and Me Tobacco Free
(BMTF). Eligible participants are
pregnant women who currently
smoke or who were a daily smoker at least three months prior to
becoming pregnant. There is no
age or income eligibility requirements for enrolling in the program.
Pregnant women are
enrolled in the BMTF program with
Kim Bemis at the Public health
office (970-641-7911). During
the prenatal period, each enrolled
participant receives four cessation counseling sessions, quit support education and carbon monoxide testing to verify their (non)smoking status. After the birth of
the baby, the mother returns
every month for 12 months to
continue CO monitoring and, if
smoke-free, she receives a $25
voucher for diapers to use at WalMart. Smoking during pregnancy
is a well-documented cause of
premature and underweight
births. Non-smoking mothers also
reduce the damaging effect of
exposure to secondhand smoke
on their children. Please call Kim
if you are interested in the program. (1/21).

My thanks to Dr. Jacobson,
DVM and her staff for
helping me throughout
Doc’s life and for the loving
care given while easing Doc
into the next life.
Doc was my advocate, my yes man, my true friend. He
gave me unconditional love. He was always there for me,
always game for whatever was next. My protector. He
was always by my side and watched over me at all times.
Even, or especially when I slept.
I know he is watching over me now from wherever he is.
Here on this mortal earth he is missed. My heart aches.
Goodbye my friend, Goodbye.

VETERANS, TROOPS CAN
ALWAYS SALUTE: A change to
Section 9 of the US Flag Code
written
into
the
Defense
Authorization Act this year now
gives veterans and members of
the US Armed Forces the authority to render a salute to the flag,
whether or not they are wearing
identifying veteran apparel such
as an American Legion cap. All
others present should remove any
headwear, face the flag and place
their right hand over their heart.
Headwear should be held to the
left shoulder, leaving the right
hand over the heart. These acts
are to be conducted anytime there
is a hoisting or lowering of the US
Flag, whenever it passes.
Citizens of foreign countries
should stand at attention. (1/21).
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. ~ Elizabeth Andrew

HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR LATELY? To make sure the
detector is working properly, test
it frequently. Fresh batteries and
regular testing are required for
safety. Detectors older than 10
years need replacing. This is the
same for smoke alarms. Any
building that has solid fuel burning
appliances and/or attached
garages need carbon monoxide
detectors. Be smart. Be safe!
