Monday January 17th Federal Holiday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday
of Martin Luther King, Jr.) is an American federal
holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King,
Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each
year, which is around the time of King’s birthday,
January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays
set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent
activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal
and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in
King’s honor began soon after his assassination in
1968.
President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into
law in 1983, and it was first observed three years
later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining
it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all
50 states for the first time in 2000.

Abortion Mills Closing
According to a recent survey, 73 abortion facilities
shut down in 2014. The state with the most closures
was Texas, where 14 abortion facilities went out of
business thanks to new legislation mandating commonsense health and safety standards.
The number of surgical abortion mills in America
peaked in 1991 at nearly 2,200. Since then, 75% have
shut down. This is good news and more evidence that
the work of pro-life legislators and organizations is
yielding real results!

Truth in Advertising
Several weeks after a young man had been hired, he
was called into the personnel director’s office. “What is the
meaning of this?” the director asked. “When you applied
for this job, you told us you had five years experience.
Now we discovered this is the first job you’ve ever held.”
“Well,” the young man replied, “in your advertisement
you said you wanted somebody with imagination.”

Hourly pay will keep you poor!
by Dan Miller (www.48Days.com)
Wealth isn’t made by the hour – it’s made with
ideas and a plan of action.
If you make $15 an hour, you’re making $31,000 a
year. A cost of living increase of 3-4% is not going to
significantly change your financial position. Yes, you
can do a great job and ask for a 10% raise each year
and in 8 years you’ll double your income to $62,000.
But that’s 8 years from now. And doubling your pay
in an hourly position is not going to happen – unless
you bring new skills to the table.
A better question is how can you make an extra
$2600 a month starting now – to make that doubling
of your income be a reality this next year? What
would that do to your debt snowball? Here are some
ideas to get your own thinking started:
• Mow 10 yards weekly at $60 each
• Spend $1300 on old silver at garage and estate
sales; clean it up, know the market and double your
investment selling on eBay
• Create a sports themed sticker package for golf
carts and sell 100 at $26 each
• Buy a fixer-upper in this wild real estate market
– do the repairs and make the entire $31,000 in one
carefully orchestrated transaction
• Be the graffiti removal expert in your town. Get
10 contracts for $260 monthly to keep a building
graffiti free
• Set up to sell kettle corn at local fairs, festivals,
fund raisers and church events. Book 3 events a
month were you could reasonably expect to net $850
each
• Explore the list of my 48 Low-Cost Business
Ideas
Nothing here requires another degree or a waiting
time. But making an idea work for you does require
a break from a paycheck mentality. If you can do
that, the sky is the limit in where your income can go
– this year.

Some new laws for 2015
• In California, a ballot initiative approved by voters in 2008 takes effect restricting the confinement
of egg-laying hens, breeding sows and veal calves.
The Humane Society of the United States says
the law goes further than any in the country when
coupled with a law signed by former Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger that extends the space requirements
for egg-laying hens to out-of-state suppliers.
• In Utah, cities and towns can no longer ban specific dog breeds within their limits. At least 10 cities
now have restrictions that ban ownership of breeds
such as pit bulls.
• In Louisiana, 16- and 17-year-olds will be able
to register to vote when obtaining a driver’s license,
though they still won’t be able to vote until they turn
18.
• In New York in February, it becomes illegal to
pose for a photo with a lion, tiger or other big cat.
The measure, which specifically prohibits contact
between members of the public and big cats at
animal shows, passed after self-portraits with the
animals started becoming more popular online, particularly with some young men on dating sites.
• The minimum wage goes up Thursday in several
states, including Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida,
Ohio, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A
wage increase in New York takes effect Wednesday.
In addition, troopers in Oklahoma get their first pay
raise in seven years.

Oklahoma Policy and Human Value
By REP. DAVID PERRYMAN, D-Chickasha; Dist. 56
In 1943, during World War II as the Allies were driving back
the Axis powers across Europe, President Franklin Roosevelt
was informed that huge caches of artwork and cultural treasures
were being destroyed by Nazis. In response, he commissioned
the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives platoon.
The group, consisting of 17 middle aged men and a few
women who interrupted careers as historians, architects, museum curators and professors, searched for, recovered and
returned to the rightful owners, hundreds of thousands of
priceless artwork and treasures that would otherwise have been
destroyed.
A Harvard professor, George Stout was a member of the
platoon and was the basis of the character portrayed by George
Clooney in the 2014 movie, The Monument Men. Clooney’s
character summed up the urgent mission of the platoon when he
said, “You can wipe out an entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and somehow
they’ll still find their way back. But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements and
it’s as if they never existed. That’s what Hitler wants.”
In a broader sense, the professor was stating an absolute truth that goes to the very core of man’s
existence: The fundamental difference between humanity and all other living creatures is that a life
without a creed, a heritage, or a religion, is a life without purpose. Consequently, stripping those
anchors strips a life of meaning.
During that same war, Viktor Frankl, a young Jewish doctor from Austria was stripped of all
humanity having passed through four concentration camps, lost his parents, his wife and most of his
family. At war’s end, Frankl authored Man’s Search for Meaning, considered by many to be one of
the ten most influential books of the twentieth century.
Quoting Frankl’s message, “There is nothing in the world, I venture to say, that would so effectively help one to survive even the worst conditions as the knowledge that there is meaning in one’s
life.” Conversely, the most effective way to murder the human spirit is to devalue the person by
eliminating its sense of greater purpose.
Observing current Oklahoma political direction, it is difficult to locate a single policy that would
tend to nurture self-worth in students or teachers by saying that we are willing to commit enough
funding to even bring them closer to the regional average.
It is virtually impossible to find any plan that would communicate to those without access to
health insurance and health care that they have sufficient intrinsic value that we should even be
concerned.
A vocal and aggressive contingent of citizens refuse to mandate that working Oklahomans who
live in poverty be paid a wage that is sufficient to house, clothe and feed a family or to purchase and
insure adequate, reliable transportation.
When public policy says a person has zero value, identifying one’s purpose becomes virtually
impossible. Unfortunately, the devaluation of a class of people ultimately devalues all classes of
people.
Oklahoma’s current preoccupation with cutting taxes has and will continue to cripple our ability
to educate our children, have safe roads and bridges, allow correctional employees a safe place to
work, improve access to health care, treat mental health and move this state forward.
Words of compassion ring hollow when public policy communicates that many Oklahomans are
simply not worth the trouble. The 55th Legislative Session will begin in a few short weeks. Will it
perpetuate an agenda that robs them of all purpose? Or will we be led by
“Monument” legislators who search for solutions, recover hope and return
opportunity to the people?
Rep. Perryman may be reached at 405-557-7401 or David.Perryman@

Grady-Ville
with dwain sehon
The comments and subject matter expressed in Dwain Sehon’s Grady-Ville column is that of his own
choosing and opinion. You can contact Dwain at Gradyville1776@yahoo.com
I have been writing fewer columns lately, but that doesn’t mean that I
haven’t been busy. Last fall before the election, I was asked to fill in as the
Chairman of the Grady County Republican Party which I accepted. Since
that time we have been working on activities to build up the party and
obviously to support our candidates in the last election. We were quite successful at election time and our candidates mostly carried Grady County.
Now the task at hand is to get yourself, Henrique, Bill, Mable, and LaRonda active in the Grady County Republican Party again. Since we have
three of the four State House Representatives and the State Senator for our
area who attend our meetings, our party is where you want to be.
We are very informal, you don’t have to dress up to attend a meeting and
who knows who might be there that you get to talk to. It is truly a chance
for everyone to get involved regardless of whether you are retired, working, a student or whatever. It truly doesn’t matter where you work or what
you do for a living, our attitude is that we are all in this together and we
can do great things when we put our heads together.
If you aren’t registered to vote don’t worry, we will be happy to give you
a voter registration form to fill in and will even turn it in for you so you can
join in the fun.
We will be having monthly meetings and are participating in quite a few
local events such as parades, festivals etc. so make sure that you don’t miss
out. Our meeting schedule will be updated often and is posted on Facebook at the Grady County Republican Party page. We hope that you will
check us out and join in. You have to be involved to get a say in what goes
on, so I hope that each of you will seriously consider participating.
The elected officials in Grady County really are interested in keeping
you informed and involved if you are able to spend a small amount of your
time to participate. Look for our meeting notices in the Washita Valley
Weekly and at www.ChickashaToday.com.
