Prepare your NGSS-classroom! Apply for the 2015 Climate Science Academy #7065 MADE CLEAR is now accepting applications for our 3rd cohort of Climate Science Academy educators. We invite Delaware eighth grade science and engineering teachers to apply. You will learn about climate change through presentations by climate science experts, hands-on activities, authentic data analysis, and on-line simulations. You will collaborate with colleagues from Delaware and Maryland, reviewing NGSSaligned climate education resources and developing a plan to incorporate them into your classroom instruction. There will be six to eight Academy sessions between April and August 2015. The Academy will use a blended-learning approach, including a mix of in-person and online sessions and independent work. You will receive a stipend when you complete work associated with all of the sessions and submit an implementation plan that documents your strategies for the 2015-16 school year. You will also have the opportunity to receive additional training and support to provide climate change PD to colleagues. Be the first to hear about dates and registration, contact Melissa Rogers at mrogers@umces.edu right away! www.madeclear.org/academy Delaware teachers can receive up to 20 clock hours upon completion of this program. 30 If the Teacher Center is Free, Why is there a Fee for My Workshop? When teachers call to enroll for workshops, we are often asked why certain workshops have fees associated with them. Many of the workshops listed in our brochure are not DTC workshops, but workshops offered by other State agencies, parks or museums; the workshops offered by these groups often include make-andtake items or sample lesson plans for each teacher to take with them. As we all know too well, most educational programs continue to have budget shortfalls and this fee is one way for the agencies to offset the cost of their workshops. Trips and guest speakers sponsored by the DTC require a $40 check to hold your place at the event. These checks are held and returned to all teachers who participate in the event as scheduled, but if a registrant does not attend, and did not cancel in a timely manner prior to the event, the money will be deposited into a DTC account. The DTC Policy Board elected to implement this policy due to the increasing number of no-shows at our large events. These events have a per person cost and we must use our registration roster to calculate this cost; when teachers do not come to these events as scheduled, it costs the DTC money and reduces our ability to offer additional workshops in the future. The Policy Board’s goal with this policy is two-fold: 1.) we hope to reduce the number of no-shows to the events and 2.) we want to recoup some of the funds lost due to the no-shows. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. DTC Policy Board Representatives Needed Brandywine and Delmar Districts Unrepresented As required in our by-laws, the Delaware Teacher Center is overseen by a Policy Board composed of one representative from each Delaware school district, as well as the Charter School Network, Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, DASA, DDOE, DSEA, and the State’s higher-education institutes. When a vacancy comes open on our Policy Board, the president of the district’s Teacher Association is contacted and asked to appoint a new member so that we may maintain a full Board. This year, the Brandywine and Delmar Associations have been unable to find representatives for their districts. If you are a teacher in the Brandywine or Delmar District and are interested in becoming a part of the Delaware Teacher Center Policy Board, please contact your Association president.
