From the Board. . .
Each time the New Year rolls around and
I sit down to write my annual resolutions, I
like to look back at last year’s list. The usual
items are on the list – be healthier, spend
less, save more, devote more time to family. I
can’t say that I accomplish everything on my
list or even that I stick with my list. I’ll most
likely make the same resolutions again and
I’ll probably add a couple of new ones.
Statistics show that about 25% of people who
make resolutions abandon them after one
week. Sixty percent of us give up after six
months. In fact, the average person makes
the same New Year’s resolution at least ten
separate times without success. If we are so
good at making resolutions and so bad at
keeping them, why do we keep making them?
Personally, I think making resolutions are
fun. The process gives me a sense of starting
fresh. It is a good time to clarify what is truly
important.
The New Year is also a time for reflection
and goal setting for the Chamber. We say
goodbye to three very dedicated and
knowledgeable board members.
Bernie
Schuurmans, Eric Sinclair, and Scott Backus
have provided a great deal of time, energy
and leadership to the Board and our
community. Their commitment has helped
the Chamber be successful and able to
provide many valuable programs and
services to our members. We welcome three
new members to our board, Tom Bloom, Sara
Wardner, and Kevin Jaspers. We appreciate
their interest and desire to help promote our
community and we look forward to working
with them.
The Chamber Board held a planning
session this past summer where we reviewed
our goals and discussed our future strategies
in relation to accomplishing our Mission.
Did you know 2015 marks the 85th
anniversary of the Greater Madison Area
Chamber of Commerce? According to the
history page on the website, “The Madison
Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1930.
Then Mayor C.P. Rognes invited leaders from
the business community, local community
organizations and churches to an open
discussion on how each could do their part to
help promote progress for the town of
Madison. Mayor Rognes especially wanted to
utilize the income brought into the
community by the construction of a new
highway through their community to
promote other such projects that would in
turn improve the local businesses and
community.”
As I read that historical piece, I couldn’t
help but think how the years really haven’t
changed what we are striving to achieve - to
increase visibility of the Chamber and its
members, to help the members succeed, and
to expand the geographic region we serve.
What has changed is the means to
accomplish our goals. Our community has
grown and changed a lot over these past 85
years. I’m sure Mayor Rognes would have a
hard time recognizing Madison today. But
I’m positive he would be proud to see that the
original goals and mission is still the focus of
our Chamber. It takes all of us - business
owners, employees, community leaders, and
volunteers - to ensure the continued success
of the Chamber and our community.
Life today is very different than it was just
five years ago let alone 85 years ago. While
our goals may not change that much over
time, the methods we use to accomplish them
are very different. The New Year is the
perfect time to reflect upon the past, give
thanks for the present, and create hope for
the future whether it is
for your community, your
family, or for yourself.

ROSIE JAMISON,
Executive Director
The Greater Madison Area Chamber of
Commerce, our community and members had
a successful year in 2014. It is my privilege
to represent members and the community as
the Greater Madison Area Chamber of
Commerce Executive Director.
At the end of 2014 our members grew by
adding twenty seven new members investing
in the greater Madison area. Our healthy
membership allows us to further develop
member services and provide more diverse
programs.
Congratulations to all for your investment
and thank you to the community for your
member patronage. As we begin the 85th
year (1930 – 2015) with now 320 members
the Chamber is well-positioned to make an
even greater impact in 2015 supporting our
mission: ‘To promote our members, the
community, and economic development,
resulting in a better quality of life.'
The Board of Directors, committee chairs,
and our vital member volunteers, make
significant contributions that benefit us all.
Leadership Madison continues with twenty
five participants and five community service
group projects. This year the Chamber had
twenty six member recognitions, frequent
updates through social media and regional
print
advertisements
and
member
recognitions, plus a new billboard on
Interstate 29. Chamber Bucks purchased
continue to encourage more and more to “buy
locally” providing a positive impact to our
area economy and Chamber member
businesses.
We are strengthened by our diverse
membership of businesses, industry,
nonprofit
organizations,
attractions,
individuals and retired members. We have
increased our presence and awareness
through
articles,
advertisements,
announcements, recognitions and social
media. We have nearly 600 Facebook Likes
and a record 3,050 reached in one week of
December. This and more regional exposure
online and in print of our attractions and
community, including a SD Department of
Tourism 2 day photo shoot, equate to more
knowing about members and promoting the
Madison area!
The Chamber Board of Directors provided
progressive leadership throughout 2014. I
want to extend appreciation to Bernie
Schuurmans of Madison Family Dental for
his 4 years of dedicated service on the Board
of Directors and 2014 GMACC President as
he retires from his distinguished professional
career. In addition, thank you to two
GMACC Board members who served for six
years. Since 2009, Scott Backus of Power
Promotions
and
Eric
Sinclair
of
Montgomery’s
Furniture
provided
progressive leadership and tireless support
on behalf of members and staff while on the
GMACC Board including Sinclair as
President in 2011. You can meet the three
new board members, officers and all ten 2015
GMACC Board of Directors in this edition.
