hether he is cleaning up hazardous
materials, giving
haircuts or driving a guided missile cruiser,
life aboard the U.S.S. Leyte
Gulf is never dull for Keokuk
native Seaman Tyrel Gipe.
He is serving his country
as a ship’s serviceman and
is responsible for managing
and operating shipboard
retail including ship’s stores,
vending machines, video
games, barber shops, laundry, dry cleaning and tailor
shops.
“A typical day on board is
long,” Gipe said. “I can cut
about 20 or 30 people’s hair a
day or do about 200 pounds of
laundry every day, not counting stores breakouts, cleaning, drills and anything else
that might come up.
“Before that, as a deck seaman I would actually spend
five-hour watches driving the
ship.”
During his more than
three years in the Navy, Gipe
sometimes served on the At
Sea Fire Party.
“I love being on the At Sea
Fire Party,” he said. “I’m
usually No. 1 hose man or
sometimes fire team leader.
Our job is to put out fires,
stop flooding, vent toxic
gases and contain dangerous
oil spills (otherwise known
as HAZMAT) on board the
ship.”
The U.S.S. Leyte Gulf (CG
55), a Ticonderoga-class
Navy guided missile cruiser,
was named in memory of the
World War II Battle of Leyte
Gulf. Its home port is Norfolk, Va.
“This deployment was
about seven months long,”
Gipe said. “We had an admiral’s staff on board. Leyte

Canadian ships to ports all
over the Mediterranean Sea.”
When it comes to sailing,
Gipe is a natural.
“The ship is always moving, but I have never been
sick at sea, so I’m among the
lucky ones,” he said.
But life on board is not
without challenges.
“Everything is very
cramped,” Gipe said. “I sleep
in about a seven-foot-long
rack that’s about 2 1/2 feet
wide. I sleep in a top rack.
I think it’s the best because
I can sit up in the morning
and not hit my head on anything, a luxury the other two
people underneath me don’t
have.”
For day-to-day recreation,
sailors can use a weight gym
and a cardio gym.
“Every day is very high
tempo and there is always
something to do,” Gipe said.
“Whenever the Internet is
working I can usually get
some time every now and
then to talk over Facebook.”
The 2008 Keokuk High
School graduate attended

College for a year before joining the Navy in 2011.

include his mother Leslie

grandmother Patty Coovert,
grandfather Lester Coovert,
and several aunts and an
uncle.
“The past 3 1/2 years I’ve
only been able to come back
about four times for about
10 days at a time,” Gipe said.
“I miss the traffic and the
roads, knowing where everything is – you could never be
lost in Keokuk.”
Military service is a part
of Gipe’s family history. His
great-grandfather served in
World War II in the Army in
Japan. His uncle, Chris Summers of Keokuk, served in
the Army National Guard.

you’re not a robot in the
Navy,” Gipe said. “You get to
hold onto your identity.”
Opportunities to travel the
world appealed to Gipe.
“I’ve been to Turkey,
Spain, Italy, Greece, Canada
– all over. It’s been quite an
experience,” he said. “I’ve
seen places and done things
that I would have never been
able to do otherwise.”
His advice for anyone considering joining the Navy?
“Just go talk to a recruiter
– it’s really that easy,” he
said. “If you want to do one

Silver Dollar closes after 40 years in Bloomfield
Jim Reyes turned 21 in
water up to his knees in
Vietnam. After discharge,
at the age of 29, he plunked
down $6,000 on the bar and
bought the Silver Dollar, on
the east side of the square in
Bloomfield. He has been there
ever since. After 40 years, on
Friday, Jan. 2, Jim closed the
doors for the last time.
But not without a party!
If the economy is bad, you
wouldn’t know it on this
night! The iconic bar was jam
packed, wall-to-wall with well
wishers, loyal patrons, and
curious onlookers leaving the
movie theater and drawn to
the gaiety, loud music, and
cups of cheer inside. Jim
had ordered special glasses
for the occasion. On one side
were the words, “Cheers to 40
Years!” on the other side a barometer, with lines, starting
at the top, “Cheers” “Buzzed”
“Drunk” and “Hurtn’ Tomorrow.” Jim laughed, “I’ll be
hurtn’ tomorrow!”
An old-time jukebox blasted
tunes from the sixties and
seventies. It was the original
jukebox in the Silver Dollar.
Jim had it brought out of retirement, dusted off, and the
45 rpm records washed for
the grand finale. Seven songs
for a buck! The music never
stopped. Nor did the celebraEMPTY NEST tion!
I’ve written about the
Reyes family
before. Jim
is the oldest
of 12 children (six
girls and six
boys). They
were raised
in Floris,
Curt Swarm
in a threebedroom
house with no indoor plumbing, by loving parents, that
taught them the values of
God, love, work, and family.
At the time, they were the
only Hispanic family in Davis
County. Jim would go on to
be mayor of Bloomfield, from
1998 – 2002, the first Hispanic
mayor in Iowa.
Jim points out with pride,
“All 12 children speak only
English. This is America! In
America the language is English! What more respect can
you pay to this great land?
How are you going to build
a great country, if you don’t
speak its language?”
Growing up in Floris, the
family made do. The kids
picked shucks in cornfields
for tamales, washed their
hair under a pump, and
played baseball in a pasture
using cowpies for bases. Jim
carried his make-do work
ethic into the military, life,
and business: live within
your means, help others,
trust in God.
Stuck in Jim’s craw like
a bad oyster, and one of the
reasons for the Silver Dollar
closing, is the ban on smoking. Jim could abide with no
smoking if it weren’t for the
exemption for casinos. “It’s
not right. I don’t care what
they say,” Jim waxes eloquently. “How can the state
tell me my customers can’t
smoke in my bar, but allow
it in casinos? It’s all about
money! Eighty-five percent
of my customers smoke. I
would have been happy to put
up a sign that said, ‘Smoking
Allowed, If you don’t like it,
don’t come in’. I fought for
this country, I pay my taxes.
Now they tell me how to run
my business? I fought communism in Vietnam, now I
Jim and Betty Reyes closed the Silver Dollar in Bloomfield
after four decades in business.
fight it here!”
Jim’s wife, Betty, pulls him
aside for cooling off and a
photograph. She has plans for
Jim and his “retirement” at
the age of 69. Maybe a bathroom remodel, and more time
with the grandkids.
Patrons such as “Johnnie”
lament (or shout) above the
music. “It’s a sad day, Jim
and Betty are good people.
An icon of Bloomfield is closing it’s doors! Where will we
go?” He hugs Jim and slaps
him on the back, “Thanks for
the memories, ole buddy.”
A lady with Johnnie tugs at
his arm. “Stick around!” she
shouts. “There’ll be dancing
on the bar before this night is
over!”

Klein Center recognized for meeting national goals
WEST BURLINGTON— Great River
Klein Center is the only Iowa Health
Care Association/Iowa Center for Assisted Living-member nursing home
in southeast Iowa to achieve at least
three of four national quality goals
for skilled nursing care by December
2014. It will be recognized with 27
other nursing homes in Iowa at the
American Health Care Association/
National Center for Assisted Living
Quality (AHCA/NCAL) Symposium in
February.
Launched in February 2012, the
AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative aims
to improve the lives of people receiving care in skilled nursing facilities by
setting four specific goals:
1. Achieve customer satisfaction, as
evidenced by having 90 percent of residents and families willing to recommend their center to others
The Klein Center’s score consistently is 94 percent or better. In long-term
care, elders or family members’ will-
ingness to recommend their nursing
home to others is the survey question
that best captures perceived quality.
Research shows that facilities with the
highest rates of satisfaction also perform better in other indicators, such
as staff stability, staff retention and
resident population.
2. Safely reduce hospital readmissions within 30 days during a skilled
nursing stay by 15 percent
We have focused on reducing hospital admissions for the last year,”
said Klein Center Administrator Ann
Abolt. “Our readmission rate is 11 percent, compared to the national average
of 14.7 percent.
Hospitalization puts the elderly at
greater risk for complications and
infections, and it increases the likelihood of reduced functioning when they
return to the skilled-nursing facility.
3. Safely reduce the off-label use
of antipsychotic drugs by 25 percent
by December 2015, and 30 percent by
December 2016
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves a drug after it has been
proven safe and effective for treating
a specific medical condition. A drug is
considered to be used off-label when
it is prescribed in a way that has not
been approved by the FDA. Off-label
use of most medicines is legal, and
some drugs are effective for uses that
haven’t been approved.
4. reating behavior associated with
dementia with antipsychotic medicine
is an off-label use. The intent of the
AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative goal is
to encourage alternative strategies for
responding to challenging behavioral
expressions in people who have dementia before considering medicines
and to ensure that antipsychotic medications, when used, are as appropriate
and safe as possible.
The Klein Center has reduced its use
of off-label antipsychotics by nearly 50
percent.
“Our rate in 2012 was 26.4 percent.
Now, it is 12.3 percent,” Abolt said.
“We are very proud of this achievement because we are well under the
national average of 19.1 percent.
5. Reduce nursing staff turnover by
15 percent
Research shows that the more consistent and dedicated the staff is, the
more they understand and effectively
respond to elders’ care needs. The
Klein Center continues working on
this goal. One improvement to employee satisfaction is the introduction of
the household and neighborhood concept in which elders and staff remain
together in small family-like groups.
The Iowa Health Care Association
and Iowa Center for Assisted Living
represent more than 650 Iowa nursing
homes, assisted-living and residentialcare facilities, home health agencies,
hospice, and independent senior living
and retirement communities.

I-Smile partners with others
to serve older residents
Lee County Health Department’s I-Smile™ Silver Program Coordinator, RaeAnn Herrick, RDH
says she recognizes the barriers and concerns of
older Iowans when it comes to their oral health
and accessing care.
Further, she says the I-Smile™
Silver pilot project is committed to
partnering with local organizations,
nursing facilities, and dentists to
facilitate access to care for our Iowans
ages 60 and over. There are specific
needs for maintaining optimal oral
Herrick
health among this population. One
of these concerns is the under recognized, but very prevalent condition of xerostomia,
otherwise known as dry mouth.
Dry mouth is a common problem and is a major
contributing factor to dental disease, especially
in the aging community. Saliva helps neutral-
ize acids in the mouth which can cause cavities.
Therefore, it is the mouth’s first line of defense
against tooth decay. Saliva facilitates digestion,
chewing, and swallowing while maintaining the
overall health of the oral tissues.
Dry mouth can occur as a result of certain medical conditions or lifestyle choices, but primarily occurs as a result of side effects from both
prescription and non-prescription medications.
Common medications taken by older Iowans that
can cause dry mouth include drugs used to treat:
depression, anxiety, pain, allergies and colds,
hypertension, and urinary incontinence.
In addition, Sjögren’s syndrome, Alzheimer’s
disease, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, and
stroke are some of the medical conditions that
can cause dry mouth. Also, head and neck radiation used for cancer therapy can destroy salivary
glands.
In addition to a balanced diet, drinking plenty of
water, avoiding or limiting alcohol, caffeine, and
tobacco, there are products available to help relieve the symptoms and complications associated
with dry mouth. These include saliva substitutes
in the form of oral rinses and gels. Sugar-free
gum and candy can also be used to help stimulate
saliva production. Also, sodium lauryl sulfate – a
common ingredient in many toothpastes to help
them lather – has been known to worsen dry
mouth, so care must be taken when choosing a
toothpaste.
The best defense against dry mouth, Herrick
says, is recognizing it and taking actions to treat
it. For more tips on treating dry mouth or to learn
more about the I-Smile™ Silver pilot project,
contact Herrick at the Lee County Health Department, (319)-372-5225.
