CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
Learn emergency procedures for adult, child and infant victims based on current AHA Guidelines. Upon successful
completion of the course, participants will earn a 2-year AHA HeartSaver Certification Card.
Common Core 101
This workshop is developed to help the elementary, secondary, and Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE)
faculty learn about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and how our field is involved. Participants will engage
in discussion regarding the implementation of the CCSS in physical education.
Essentials of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program
The Essentials of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program workshop is a supplemental professional development
opportunity designed to provide the physical education teacher with the knowledge and tools to participate in this
national program. This workshop provides physical education teachers with 5 foundational elements needed to
implement the program in their school; perfect for those just getting started.

How to Stay Active While Applying the Common Core State Standards
Utilizing the CCSS/CSS in Physical Education is thought to be a challenge. However, there are ways you can keep
your students active, all while applying the Reading Standards for Science and Technical Subjects Grades 6-12.
Standards-Based Physical Education: How to Plan a Standards-Based Lesson
Standards-based physical education is a systematic approach to instruction that focuses on learning. This presentation
will share an easy to follow process for designing standards-based lessons that includes: unpacking the standard,
aligning instruction and assessment with the standard, and embedding assessment into instruction. A standards-based
lesson will be modeled so participants can experience first hand what standards-based instruction truly looks like.
Common Core in P.E. Using Fit Books
Learn how to support the Common Core State Standards in language arts using Fit Books. Fit Books focus on weekly
essential questions, student response, vocabulary word of the week, end of unit reflections, AVID strategies, periodic
goal setting, components of physical fitness, opportunities for group collaborative work, and ideas to support English
Language Learners. All this without compromising physical activity in your program.
Technology in Motion: How Technology Can Be Used to Enhance Physical Education
Technology is part of daily life. Instead of asking students to put away their phones during physical activity, let’s ask
them to use them to enhance the learning process. Through the use of innovative apps that are available at very little
cost, and additional resources, physical educators can use technology to enhance class activities in a new and fun way.
Developing Assessment Tools for Physical Education
This session will discuss the process for developing assessment tools that support teachers knowing if their students
have learned. Los Angeles Unified School District and other parts of California have used this process successfully.
Participants will learn about in-depth tool design and will also be provided with field tested assessment tools. Expected
Learning outcomes: Participants become familiar with this in-depth process of creating assessment tools and will be
able to develop their own standards-based assessment tools.
Whatever Happened to Comprehensive Health Education in Schools?
Too often educators define health education as nutrition, physical activity and/or sexuality education. Unfortunately,
students’ needs are broader and more complex. This session will explore the need for and scope of comprehensive
health education and detail why it matters! Participants will identify current health threats to youth and examine the
rational for moving to a comprehensive vs. available funding approach.
Get ‘Em Moving...AND...Loving It!
Have you experienced students who refuse to move? Have you been forced to work with a large class, small space, and
little equipment? We will teach you how to have your classes effortlessly be engaging to all students especially the
non-athletic ones! You will take away information that you can implement on Monday.
Physical Best: Teaching the Content of FITNESSGRAM
Simply administering the FITNESSGRAM without developing the knowledge base in our students is not effective, and
can be counterproductive. Approaching the FITNESSGRAM in the fashion it was intended to be … a teaching tool …
is important.
Keep Calm & Common Core
This presentation will focus on integrating elementary physical education games and common core standards for
language arts and literacy without compromising the physical education curriculum.
Apps for Physical Educators, Student Teachers and Supervisors
This presentation demonstrates apps that can sequence and use music, apps to evaluate student teacher instruction in
physical education and organizational apps. Some of the apps covered include: Team Shake, Timer, Temp Slow,
Interval Timer, Easy Tag (Dartfish), OARS, e-Cove Admin, etc. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their
iPads/iPhones to share the apps they use.

Quick Games for Fun & Fitness
An evolving collection of over 20 action-packed game ice breakers, time fillers and complete lessons that promote
cardio, critical thinking, motor learning and teamwork. Play inside or outdoors w/minimal equipment. These games are
easy to monitor, modified for inclusion and work for all ages PK - adult. People love these games!
Using Partner Activities to Stimulate Physical Movement
Emphasis will be on demonstrating how partner interaction can motivate students to be fully engaged in moderate to
vigorous physical activity. Session will include the use of pedometer, combative, cooperative challenge, rhythmic,
competitive, and subject integration partner activities. Group discussion will identify variations of the activities
presented, as well as strategies to make the activities more physically stimulating.
Adapted Physical Education for the Unique Learner
Unique learners, with the correct teaching strategies, can perform above our expectations and goals. Being able to
provide the tools for our most special students to learn is an overwhelming experience. Join us as we learn new
teaching strategies and incorporate visual supports to teach fitness within the classroom.
College Athletes as Mentors in Elementary Physical Education
San Diego Unified School District, UC San Diego Center for Community Health - School Wellness Program, and UC
San Diego Athletics Department collaborated to improve the health of the students in local elementary schools by
implementing the Increased Movement and Physical Activity Class Time (IMPACT) Program.
PE3: PE for the Mind, Body and Spirit
Learn how schools nationwide, including Alvord USD in Riverside, are harnessing the power of cutting-edge
assessment technology called the “Spirit System” to correlate health to academics and an innovative, Common Corealigned curriculum, “PE3”: PE for Mind, Body, Spirit that together are helping students reach the full potential of the
human spirit, while simultaneously producing powerful data to drive decisions.
HIV Prevention for the 21st Century
Does your school district address all legal requirements for HIV prevention? Are your HIV prevention lessons aligned
with 21st Century Skills? Probably not! This interactive session examines a program that does. A preview CD will be
provided to all participants.
Focus on FUNdamentals: Physical Literacy Development for Children with Disabilities
The S.M.I.L.E. program at Acadia University provides an opportunity for hundreds of children with varying abilities to
develop fundamental movement skills and physical literacy through fun and play Integrating a wide variety of
activities, the ability-based program allows participants to enhance their physical, social and cognitive skills, while
improving their overall quality of life.
Contemporary Dance
This class is for anyone who just wants to take class for themselves or simple choreography to take back to the kids.
Bringing Language Arts, Storytelling, and Literature into Physical Education
This session helps Elementary Physical Education teachers incorporate the Common Core Standards for English and
Language Arts into their curriculum. The session also includes other language arts based ideas that teachers can use to
meet the common core standards in a physical education classroom.
Adrienne’s Salsa Cardio
This 50 minute, multilevel, low-impact class integrates cardiovascular movements with steps and combinations
emanating from the infectious Latin rhythms of Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba (Salsa, Cha-Cha,
Merengue and Mambo).
Community Partnerships in Physical Education
Primary researcher in a study examining the utilization of community partnerships in the field of physical education
will present results and recommendations.

Mindful Stress Reduction for High School (and other at-risk populations)
Stress is one of the leading health concerns today. Students (and adults) from all different backgrounds are
experiencing the negative effects of stress at an alarming rate, including behavior problems at school and suffering
academic performance. Come learn a highly effective, yet simple, student friendly strategy for reducing stress at school
and beyond that improves classroom management too!
Functional Movement through Volleyball
Core stability, development, and strengthening, functional movement and breathing, all correlated with technical skill
development for the sport of volleyball.
Peak Performance Practices for Sports and Physical Education
Learn a wide variety of peak performance practices to apply for teaching your student/athletes and being better
yourself. Your time will be spent in learning and applying the skills learned for your teaching. prime items covered: an
intellectual understanding; experience of a wide variety of peak performance practices; and stress management
practices.
The Importance of Cultural Competency in Physical Education
Within the state of California, the importance of ethnic cultural competency in physical education is unmistakable.
However, many teachers seemingly do not align their teaching approach to these principles. The purpose of this
presentation is to bring attention to cultural diversity in physical education and offer helpful suggestions to practicing
teachers who aspire to increase their level of cultural competency.
Health Education Toolkit
Health education is an important component to coordinated school health. Alongside resources provided through
CAHPERD regarding the physical education toolkit, found on CAHPERD’s website, a health education toolkit was
developed. Resources, curriculums, laws, and more will be presented in the discussion and utilization of CAHPERD’s
health education toolkit.
Middle School Physical Education Roundtable
This session will provide middle school physical education teachers with a forum to meet and discuss lesson ideas with
each other. The presenter will prompt discussions and provide both lessons and helpful resources for teachers. Please
feel free to bring your own lesson ideas and resources to share. This will be a great session to connect with other
passionate teachers.
Group Dynamics in PE Departments: Differing Programs, Similar Success
Little is known about group dynamics within physical education departments. Using information gathered from a study
exploring three state recognized middle school physical education departments, attendees will learn how these schools
found success despite their differences. Additionally, the unique characteristics of each program may provide insights
as to how teachers can improve the group dynamics within their department.
Big Things Come in Small Packages 2014
K-2 movement activities with minimal equipment and directions. These student-tested and approved activities make
moving fun and even your youngest students will be fully engaged. The purpose is to help students better understand
movement concepts that are essential to be successful and competent movers.
Make an Impact: Effective Practices for Nutrition and Physical Education
Nutrition education and physical activity programs should increase fruit and vegetable consumption and increase
physical activity. Effective programs provide opportunities to learn and practice skills needed to sustain a healthy
lifestyle and achieve success in the classroom. This study investigated the effect of the widely used Harvest of the
Month program. Recommendations for planning and implementing programs will be offered.

FITNESSGRAM testing produces many kinds of data, with multiple uses. Program improvement, being one of the
most important.

Salsa Rueda (Square Dance with Cuban Rhythm)
Salsa Rueda is a square dance with Cuban rhythms. Participants learn the basic steps of Salsa and perform them in a big
circle. Many beginner moves can be performed without “having to touch” a partner. Participants switch partners
frequently so dynamics like “I only dance with my friends” are no issue. Salsa Rueda teaches collaboration skills,
rhythm, coordination and cultural awareness.

The Beach Community Wellness Program: A University-Community Collaboration
The Beach Community Wellness Program (BCWP) was created to educate under-served Long Beach citizens on the
importance of fitness and nutrition. The presentation will highlight: the need for such programs, how to create and
sustain a community program, positive benefits for LB citizens, university faculty, university students, and community
partners. An example of the BCWP format will also be presented.
Developing FITT into your PE Program
After teaching the same physical education curriculum for eight years, the district asked all the PE departments in the
district to change their curriculum. We agreed to change and now we are going to share with you how we changed our
program. We will share with you the things that worked and the things we needed to change.
Creating Videos for Your Class
Our students are visual learners. I struggle trying to find You Tube videos to help my students learn. Why not make
your own? Bring your own mobile device to learn how to use mobile technology to create your own videos. We will
learn how to record the videos, as well as how to edit using iMovie.
PE Buddies
This session was created to explain and provide information of the creation of a class that combines general education
students with my adapted physical education class. I will provide the history behind the evolution of my program at
Granada High School and the implementation of the concept at the elementary schools.
The Big Box of Activities
Experience self-paced activities that promote skill progressions for hand-eye, foot-eye, manipulative skills, striking,
targeting and spatial awareness. Stations are designed to emphasize motor learning concepts while allowing one-on-one
teacher instruction.
