PARCC Assessments Coming
By Chris Slack
Arcola School Superintendent Tom
Mulligan provided a timeline to the
school board at its monthly meeting
on January 14 on the Partnership for
Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers (PARCC) assessment
that will measure student growth at
Arcola.
PARCC is billed as a high-quality,
computer-based
kindergarten
through 12th grade assessment in
mathematics and English Language
Arts/Literacy and is based on
Common Core State Standards.

At a brief meeting on
Monday night, the Arcola
City Council unanimously
agreed to a law enforcement
mutual aid agreement with a
statewide agency.
Arcola Police Chief Mike
Phillips explained at the
meeting that the resolution
aligns the city with the
Illinois Law Enforcement
Alarm System, which is a
statewide law enforcement
mutual aid system.
Phillips noted that the
alarm system offers several
benefits, including:
• Providing immediate
extra law enforcement manpower and equipment at the
scene of law enforcement
emergencies.
• Providing for an automatic and systematic response of
law enforcement manpower
teams.
• Providing for contractual
responsibilities and liabilities.
• Providing broad area coverage.
• Fostering a cooperative
spirit for law enforcement
emergency planning.
• Providing access to specialized
manpower
and
equipment which no one
department could afford to
maintain.
based assessment (PBA) will occur
between March 9 and April 3, followed by an end-of-the-year (EOY)
assessment from April 27 to May 22.
The focus of the PBA is on effective
writing and analyzing text on the
English Language Arts portion; and
on applying skills, concepts and
understandings to solve multi-step
problems requiring abstract reasoning, precision, perseverance and
strategic use of tools in the math portion.
The EOY assessment will focus on
reading comprehension in English
Language Arts and conceptual
understanding of the major content
and demonstrations of mathematical
fluency.
In his timeline, Mulligan said communications with parents on the
assessment and training of teachers
are slated for early February, followed in mid-February by student
practice.
“We want high quality assessments based on instructional targets,” said Mulligan, who said a committee of administrators and teachers will be setting an instructional
objective based on learning standards.
The Partnership for Assessment of
Readiness for College and Careers
(PARCC) is a group of states working
together to develop a set of assessments that measure whether students are on track to be successful in
college and their careers. These
assessments in Mathematics and
English Language Arts/Literacy give
teachers, schools, students and parents better information whether students are on track in their learning
and for success after high school, and
tools to help teachers customize
learning to meet student needs.
Beginning with the 2014-15 school
year, the PARCC assessments are
ready for states to administer.
