From the Executive Director
Set a New Year’s Resolution to Give Back to Sun City
Happy New Year. Wow! When we were young we never
thought we would be writing 2015 on checks, and we never
would have believed that checks would not be needed! Our
grandfathers grew up with horse and wagon transportation
and saw airplanes before they died. We grew up without air
conditioning and now we live in the desert. Life is wonderful,
exciting and fun!
Sue Papilion, SCSCAI
January is an exciting month for Sun City. It is the month
Executive Director
staff and committees start planning for Sun City’s new scal
year that begins July 1, 2015. Also, the election kicks off for new Board of Directors at
the Residents’ Forum on January 14. e event offers a chance for residents to meet each
candidate and ask him or her questions.
Planning is key to keeping Sun City nancially sound. Strategies help to reserve
enough money to replace expensive equipment, vehicles and update facilities, which is
the rst order of business. Staff managers review their department's reserve items and
request that the Common Area Properties Committee inspects and, hopefully, approves
their recommendations for replacement. For example, Golf may need to replace a
mower, so a CAP inspector reviews the maintenance record and total cost of ownership
report, as well as looks at the item before a decision is made. You may not be affected
by the purchase of a mower, but you probably have an opinion on how or if Desert
Vista should be remodeled, or if new pool furniture is needed. After appropriate
committees make their decisions on replacements, the Board of Directors reviews the
request and makes its own suggestions.
Committees are an important arm of the Board of Directors, which is responsible
for the overall budget, management and organization of the community. Each committee plays an important role in the decisions made by your Board of Directors.
e committees need new volunteers all the time. If you don't have a major area of
expertise, don't worry, your interest is enough to get you started. If you care about your
community, YOU ARE NEEDED!
is year, make a New Year’s resolution to give some time back to your Sun City
Summerlin resort, and you will nd it is fun and you will meet new people, too.
For information, call my office, 966-1409, and I will aim you in the right direction.
NOTICE of Board of Directors’ Election – 2015

Community Association, Inc. The SCSCSAI administrative staff will be available

Your Association Has Started the Budget Process
e scal year for the Association begins on July 1, 2015, and ends June 30,

e income and expenses of the
Association contain a lot of detail and changes must be considered on a line-by-line method. is takes at least three
months before it is presented to the Board and the residents
in a series of meetings in March 2015. At the meeting in
March, every line of the budget is reviewed.
After the line-by-line review, the budget is sent to the
Finance Committee for review and a recommendation of
approval to the Board of Directors. is is followed by
approval from the Board for the 2015 – 2016 budget to be
presented at the annual meeting of Sun City Summerlin.
A look at the highlights of the audited numbers for the
2013-2014 scal year gives you an idea of the size of our

e statements indicate revenue to your Association of

Reserves make up a very important part of our nancial
picture. On June 30, 2014, we had $13,405,427 set aside in cash
and investments for the replacement of assets that had to be
replaced due to normal wear and tear, plus unforeseen damage.
Your Board has been successful in the past few years keeping your annual assessment at a constant level of $1,284. e
Board and staff will spend many days this year going over
every line in the budget to nd the income and control the
expenses to keep your annual assessment at a reasonable
level.
Election Committee Set to Count BOD Ballots on February 25
The Election Committee is preparing to conduct the annual election of Sun City directors. This year, Tuesday, February 24,
2015, is designated as Election Day and will be the last day for residents to cast their ballots. Counting of the ballots will be on
Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Four positions will be filled. Each home has four (4) votes that may be cast for one candidate
or divided among all in any manner desired. It is critical that not more than four (4) votes are marked.
Ballots (part of the Link mailing label) and a return envelope will be included in your February Link. The ballot instructions
are printed on the back of the address label, with the ballot portion perforated so the name and address can be removed by
tearing it off at the perforations. After you mark your votes on this ballot, remove the address portion and insert the ballot into
the envelope so that the bar code shows through the window in the envelope. It may then be mailed to the Administration
Office, Mountain Shadows Community Center, 9107 Del Webb Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV 89134; or save Sun City the cost of
postage by personally depositing your ballot into the ballot box at Mountain Shadows. If you mail your ballot, it must arrive no
later than 5 p.m. on February 24. The polls for voting will close at 5 p.m. on February 24.
Should you lose or accidentally destroy your ballot, another can be obtained at the Administration Office. Before requesting a replacement ballot, be certain that another member of your household has not already voted. If two ballots are received from the same household, BOTH will be voided. Also, if more than four (4) votes are marked on a ballot, all votes will be
voided.
The following is an alphabetical listing of candidates for this election:
1 James Akers
2 Ken Caroccia
3 Joe O’Connell
4 Ken Resnick
5 Bob Robey
6 Karl Wiedemann
One MEET THE CANDIDATES event will be held. It will be on Wednesday, January 14, at 7 p.m. The location will be at the
Desert Vista Community Center. The event will be moderated by Mayor Pro-Tem Stavros Anthony. Each candidate will make a
presentation. This will be followed by a question and answer period. After this formal meeting, candidates will be available to
answer additional questions from residents.
Each candidate may provide a photo and a statement that will be published in the February Link.

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. We vote in elections
once a year, but when we volunteer, we vote every day about the kind
of community we want to live in.” – Anonymous

Charities, the community service organization whose
volunteers provide handyman services and transportation for residents who are unable to drive. Mary oversees the

“My job is to make things ow smoothly for drivers, handymen and the clients they serve,” said Mary, emphasizing how the
organization always needs more volunteers, especially drivers.
Lea Solomon is a longtime Security Patrol volunteer. Not
long after Lea’s husband died, she was awakened by a chirping
sound coming from her smoke detector. At rst, she worried
that it meant that there was a re hazard, but quickly realized
it was just her smoke detector’s batteries telling her that they
needed to be replaced. “I called Charities and the nicest
handyman came to my house that day. He climbed a long ladder, changed the batteries and I’ll always be grateful to him,”
Lea said.

Making Resolutions a
Reality
Whether you want to lose weight,
quit smoking, get your nances in
order or spend more time with your
family, here’s some advice to help
make your resolutions stick. Remember, winners do what losers
don’t want to do. Have passion, take
Kristie McWhorter,
action, and you'll get what you’re
MS, CPT, GFI,
after.
Director of Fitness
kristiem@suncitylv.com
Set a very speci c goal.
fitness@suncitylv.com
Resolving to “exercise more,” for
example, is not speci c enough. “I will work out 30 minutes
a day four days a week” is more speci c. If you want to
spend more time with your family, make an appointment
every week to spend time together.
Set a goal that has a measurable outcome.
“Getting in shape” is not quanti able. Without a goal
that is measurable, how will you know when you’ve made
progress or even reached it?
Assign a timeline.
“Someday” is not a day of the week. e difference
between a dream and a goal is a timeframe for making it
happen. A deadline also can help motivate you and prevent
you from procrastinating.
Identify small steps.
Major life changes don’t just happen; they happen one
step at a time. Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Steady progress through well-chosen, realistic, interval steps
produces results. Know what those steps are before you set
out.
Create accountability.
If you know precisely what you want — and there are
real consequences for not doing the assigned work — you
are more likely to continue in your pursuit of your goal.
Find someone in your circle of family or friends to whom
you can be accountable. Make periodic reports on your
progress.
Change your lifestyle.
It is difficult to be overweight or inactive without a
lifestyle that supports it. Willpower will not make things
change. Be sure to clean up your environment by removing
obstacles in your way. Remember that you don’t break habits: You replace one behavior with a new one.
Happy New Year from the Fitness Department!

Security Patrol: 254-2303
Residents Driving in Sun City Summerlin
Speed limits are 30 mph on the
three major thoroughfares in Sun
City Summerlin – Del Webb, Sun
City and omas W. Ryan boulevards. Security Patrol head driver
Tak Matsumoto explains that the
speed limit on all remaining streets
is 25 mph.
“ at includes posted connector
Judy Hunt, Chief, Sun streets such as Button Willow, Darby
City Summerlin
Falls and Villa Ridge, as well as
Security Patrol
neighborhood residential streets,
whose speed limits are not posted,” Tak said.
Resident drivers must come to a full stop at intersection
stop signs. For maximum visibility, stop signs at Sun City’s
intersections are larger than standard signs. Furthermore,
lighted stop signs blink at some of the community’s busier
intersections.
Sun City streets are public roads, whose laws are enforced by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
“Our Patrol volunteers do not confront drivers who exceed posted speed limits, or those who fail to obey stop
signs,” said Sun City Summerlin Security Patrol Chief
Judy Hunt. “Traffic citations are levied by Metro police
officers who de nitely patrol in Sun City Summerlin.
Moving violation nes are steep and often accompanied by
points that may increase insurance premiums.”
Citations and nes levied in traffic court won’t always
change the bad habits of careless drivers, regardless of age.
For bad drivers to become more attentive, too often the results of their carelessness must be personally experienced in
an accident that happens to them or someone they love,
reports the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
On the favorable side, older drivers tend to limit their
driving during bad weather and at night, according to
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. ey also realize a
lower incidence of impaired driving as they are less likely
to drink and drive. Additionally, 77 percent of older motor
vehicle occupants wear seat belts compared to lesser numbers among younger motorists.
Experienced drivers tend to plan familiar routes on
well-lit streets, and they maintain adequate distance between their car and those in front of them. Mature drivers
avoid such distractions as listening to loud music, talking
on a cell phone, texting or eating while driving.
Resident drivers must come to a full stop at intersection
stop signs. For maximum visibility, some stop signs blink
at the community’s busier intersections.
Driving helps active adults stay mobile and independent, but the risk of being injured in even a minor fenderbender is genuine. Vision should be checked annually with
glasses and corrective lenses worn if prescribed for driving,
cites the Center for Disease Control and Motor Vehicle
Injuries. To avoid possible side effects or drug interactions,
drivers should be certain that their doctor or pharmacist
reviews prescribed medications.
Within the boundaries of Sun City, the Security Patrol
Procedures Manual reminds volunteer Patrol drivers that
golf carts must obey traffic regulations. Gas-driven or
battery-operated golf carts are permissible on public
streets, whose speed limits do not exceed 35 mph. Head
lights must be operational after dark. Exactly as when operating any motor vehicle, golf cart drivers in residential communities are required to have a valid driver’s license in their
possession.

Water, Water Everywhere — Not
Sun City Departments Work to Reduce Liquid Costs
Sun City Summerlin’s Golf Maintenance Department completed a xeriscaping project at Highland Falls Golf Course
in October aimed at reducing expenses for water and maintenance. e plan is part of an expansive turf reduction project approved by Sun City’s Board of Directors through the
Southern Nevada Water Authority’s water rebate program.
According to GCM Director Brian Bagwell, the work at
Highland Falls involved 6 acres of grassy area in front of
the lake that runs along Sun City Boulevard. Brian and his
golf superintendent Roger Knight worked on a plan to utilize drought-tolerant plants, along with different sizes,
shapes and colors of rock placed in pleasing patterns. In
addition to the work in front of Highland Falls, Brian
described other projects at Highland Falls’ Hole No. 12.
e project, Brian said, will be featured in an upcoming
SNWA newsletter that will showcase the breadth of the
design, which features a large, impressive dry creek bed.
In addition to the work completed by the Golf Maintenance Department, Louis Darling, director of Landscape, is
heading up equally impressive projects in his department.
“We are in the process of turf reduction on Greenbelt
No. 7, which is also known as Sundial West Park, located
on Sundial Drive, west of Del Webb Boulevard between
Big Timber and Highvale. is greenbelt is watered with
Golf
potable (drinking) water and is a very large park. Work is
under way and we expect to be nished by the end of February,” Louis said.
After that, Louis said he will begin working with a landscape designer to create an aesthetically pleasing plan that
will eliminate much of the grass surrounding the Desert
Vista community center. Stay tuned for more information
on that project as it develops.

Turn Your Attention to Roses,
Texas Rangers
January is here and I have a couple of reminders to
mention. First, if you’re a rose bush grower you already know this, but for everyone else it’s time to
prune your roses. Also, if you plan on doing a restoration pruning on your Leucophyllums (Texas rangers), this is when you want to do it. Remember, the
lower you cut them the higher the chance that they
will sprout from the roots, which will create more
plants. If this happens and you don’t want them, cut
off the sprouts. Do not spray herbicide, which could
kill the main plant.
I wish everyone a healthy and happy New Year.
