Dixie Hwy Oakland Park, FL 33334 11a-5p Barefoot Children of Fort Lauderdale Parrot Head Club Presidential Squawk—State of Our Phlock By Jim DiLenge I was sitting down on a bench enjoying a cold beverage after the rubber ducky races were over at this year’s Water Taxi Pub Crawl. Karolyn saw me relaxing, sat down next to me and said I get to do this next year. That’s when it hit me that she has been involved in everything for the last 6 years and it was now going to be my responsibility to make sure everything stays on track. It was one of those times when you say to yourself – what am I going to do now? The good news, of course, is that the club is in great shape. The board is wonderful and we have a fantastic group of people in the club who understand the Parrothead mantra of Party with a Purpose. I am looking forward to being involved with such a great group of people. After a successful Pub Crawl we look to our summer activities, which are highlighted by our Pet Rescue event taking place on July 27 th at Tequila Sunrise. We moved this year to a location that is much more pet friendly with lots of grass for the animals and there will be tents to keep all of us a bit cooler! The final touches are being put in place for the event but you can pre-order a t shirt and get your raffle tickets ahead of time from our website. www.barefootchildrenphc.com I’d like to hear from you with your thoughts on potential events, things the club can do that are both fun and support our community and/or changes we may want to look at to improve what we are already doing. Email me at jimdilenge@comcast.net Jim DiLenge Elected President! The phreedom to vote has brought us a new club president and returning board members! Jim DiLenge has been elected to carry on the duties previously attended to by Karolyn Holmes. A big boat drink toast to Karolyn who served for 6 years and to Jim for tossing his hat into the ring! Secretary Al Newman and Events Director Amy Breslow were re-elected to serve another two year term. Completing the board are Craig Holmes VP, Julie Cuneo Treasurer, Robin St. George Membership Director, and Larry Hill and Britt Lanier Members at Large. Former Prez, Karolyn Holmes Hard to believe it has been 6 years since I became President over a fledgling club along with some awesome Board Members who saw the potential that this club could be, both Social and Philanthropic. Great friendships have been made over the years by all. For those of you who have been around awhile just think about the friends you have met thru the club! And we raised money! Part of the purpose of our Charter is to raise money for charity and here is a breakdown of what the Club has done these past 6 years. And to think we started with $0. 200820092010- $6,637 $12,771 $17,960 201120122013- $16,142 $24,573 $32,426 WOW!!!!! In looking back through the pictures of our events (you can find these on our website www.barefootchildren.com, and yes I am always plugging the club) there were many fond memories and fun moments so it was hard to pick just one. So here are my top choices: 2013 Buffett Concert- so many of us volunteered to pull off an awesome Tailgate Party with Radio Margaritaville’s JD Spradlin and to top it off Margaritaville Suncare and the Margaritaville Bus joined us! We had the best Porta Potties ever!!! Thanks Violet ! 2011 Buffett Concert- The Margarillas took our club banner picture and it made the JumboTron during the Buffett concert!!!! 2010 Meeting of the Minds- who can forget the Devil Parrot on Lynn Ianni’s balcony right behind the main stage. Every one noticed it ,even the Coral Reefers! 2009- My first ING Marathon Cheer Zone with the Miami Club. The looks on the runners faces as we cheered them on at mile 23 was priceless! They were even thanking us for being there as they ran by! This experience made me feel proud to be a Parrot Head and how we CAN make a difference to people and to our World! 2009- Landshark Stadium Press Concert- only 200 of us were invited to be at the Press Release with Buffett at the newly named Landshark Stadium! What a great excuse to play hooky from work! Kathy Kerstetter had her pregnant belly painted with the Miami Dolphins logo and made the news! And then later in the month we ran out onto the field at halftime for FINS with the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders. Oh what a night! 2010 Buffett Concert in Sunrise- The Year of the Monsoon! A few members lost their tents in the storm and the Coral Reefers thought it was too cold to come outside for the Meet and Greet. Even though we were wet and cold we could only laugh at Mother Nature trying to dampen our spirits. 2010- Alzheimer’s Memory Walk- we sold our Flamingo Coolies during the Walk on Hollywood Beach and racked in the money $. Ramona even had a man in a hotel room throw her a $20 bill from the balcony which almost went into the pool, but fast acting Ramona saved it! Continued on Page 3 Page 3 A Parrot Head Celebration of 6 Years! Con’t from pg 2 These are just a few of my favorite memories over the years. We filled our club’s mission by creating more fun filled events such as Street Clean Ups, Taste of Parrotdise, Pet Rescues, Beach Clean Ups, Beach parties, Raft Ups, Ronald McDonald House Dinners, Regifting Parties, Halloween Parties, Harlem Shake, Jaycee Margarita Throwdown, Marlins Games and attending Meeting of the Minds! We could not have accomplished all of these events during the past years without great board members and committee members, so I would like to thank those who serve and have served with me. Larry Hill- VP, Treasurer and Member at Large Gia Cosbie- Treasurer Paula Predergast- Secretary Craig Holmes- VP Britt Lanier- Member at Large Russell Kerr- Treasurer, VP , President, McParrot Heads Jeff Greaver- President Jim Dilenge-Secretary, Member at Large and now President Al Neman- Secretary Julie Cuneo- Treasurer Amy Breslow- Events Director and past Newsletter Editor Robin St George- Membership Director Ramona Legowski- Green Parrot Head and Newsletter Editor Bill Sadler – Manatee Coordinator Lynn Ianni- VP Judi Rae Kesner- Facebook Guru Gail and Barry Birenbaum- Mc Parrot Heads Thanks for the great memories and I look forward to seeing where the new leadership will take the club in the future. But Craig gets a reprieve this issue as he recently tied the knot with phellow parrot head, Laurie Schwarz. The newlyweds held their ceremony at the Pier House in Key West, officiated by the Mayor himself. On a hot June 14th afternoon, the couple exchanged vows on the beach with phriends and phamily and a traditional Keys sunset. Captain Josh sang in the first dance with “If I Had a Hammock” and for those of you not familiar with the song… well it ends with a proposal and a hammock built for two! Six years ago, when we started this mess with Karo in charge, I was one of the first to arrive at every Phlocking with Karo. Page 8 Barefoot Children of Fort Lauderdale You Can’t Reason With Hurricane Season By Manatee Bill We live in Florida so hurricanes are not "if," hurricanes are "when." It has been a decade since that horrible 2004-05 span so . . . Time to start thinking about the next hit. The part I hate worst is the dark. Shutters are down, electric off, I'm trying to shave in the dark, flashlight shining on the ceiling. UGH! Not this year. I've learned. If you also hate the dark, here's my solution. All of the big box stores sell solar-powered lights to line your patio, driveway and front walk. These lights are cheap, dependable and easy to store. Buy five or six, put some beach sand in the bottom of milk jugs, stick in your lights and you have safe, stable, rechargeable lanterns with nice handles. Shower or even read in the soft glow of God's gift. Next day, he will give you more free light. Most of these lights hold a 8-12 hour charge which should get you through the evening. Money well spent for lights with on-off switches. You may douse your light at bed time and still have charge for your early morning coffee. Remember, hurricanes are "when." Don't wait until all the supplies are sold out. The Switch—Goodbye Karolyn, Hello Jim! The June Phlocking at Salt Life was the official club changing of the guard. Newly Elected President Jim DiLenge presented Former President Karolyn Holmes with an everlasting margarita honoring her dedicated service to the club over the past 6 years. Thank goodness we were at a bar so she could celebrate with a real beverage afterwards! Membership Director Robin St. George shares a smile with Karolyn. Rumor has it after the photo they went looking for the jumbo lost shaker of salt! In six years as Prez, Karolyn did some amazing things but my favorite of all is the 2013 Buffett concert. Karolyn worked the crowd and signed up 70 new members. Karolyn knew we'd never see most of them again but she happily accepted their $20 -- $1400 profit for tailgating? That must be a record. Bill Sadler, Manatee Bill Water Taxi Pub Crawl Wrap Up By Event Director, Amy Breslow Page 9 Changes in Attitudes, Changes in Latitudes could well have been the theme for this years Pub Crawl.. The Friday night Welcome party/Phlocking brought us great musical entertainment by the Jim Morris Trio, featuring John Patti and Jimmy Pappas. A troprockin attitude was upon us, and a great time was had by all… As many of our chapter members who do not normally make it to the Saturday event, were present, we decided to hold the auction on Friday night instead of its previous location of Saturday night. Thanks to great donations by chapter members and friends, and great baskets from the American Lung Association, this was a huge success. Special thanks to Olga, Julie, Karolyn and Ed for set up, and the difficult (but fabulous) task of trying to make room for the all the prizes that kept coming… A new Northerly latitude and route for the water taxi, took our fearless pubbers to new destinations, exploring the great unknown, and having a great time… Everyone liked the longer stays at each stop, and the great drinks they found when they arrived. Members and Guests alike were so impressed by Flip Flops Dockside that we will be holding a phlocking there Sept. 25th. The party didn’t end upon their return as we entered the Last Parrot Standing Party. Captain Josh serenaded our returning crawlers as they walked the wooden plank surrounding the pool, greeted by free Margarita’s, beer, wine, and rum cocktails, compliments of our fabulous sponsors, Barefoot Wines, Landshark Beer, and Margaritaville Spirits. Thanks to the BFC Board for giving up some time to act as servers, and to Ramona and our new official shot-man “Tom” for his help as well… Thanks to all the members who volunteered, crawled and generally had a great time… With everyone’s help and generosity we were able to present our check for $4,700.00 to the American Lung Association at our phlocking in June. Here’s to many more “Lovely Cruises” Your cruise director - Amy June 5th Hollyweird was the recipient of rare twin hurricanes. Hurricanes Angie and Rose made landfall at approximately 10 AM as Cat 3 storms and quickly grew to Cat 6 after Mimosas. My place was a disaster with bras, panties, and bikinis knee deep! They finally subsided on June 10th and headed back north as Tropical Depressions. The NWS has issued a warning that these rare Twins could regenerate and be back the end of August to October.. TropRock Trivia When: June 28, 1985 Where: Cincinnati, Ohio during the "Sleepless Knights Tour" at the Timberwolf Amphitheater. Jimmy Buffett commented that the fans who were returning each year in costumes were reminiscent of Deadheads. Timothy B. Schmit (who also played bass for the Eagles) replied, "Yea Jimmy, Parrotheads". Jimmy repeated it to the crowd... and the term stuck.
