A beneficiary agency of WELCOME TO THE YJCC! Gary S. Lipman CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear YJCC Members and Friends, One of the advantages of serving as CEO of the Bergen County YJCC is that I always get to look forward. Actually, the entire staff at the YJCC is looking forward; the result being a variety of new programs and events that are presented in this Program Guide for Winter-Spring 2015. While we wait with trepidation for the first snow storm, we’re providing opportunities for you and your family to enjoy the winter months in a fun, energizing, warm and welcoming place. And then we’re looking forward to spring with anticipation and excitement! We welcome the opportunity to serve you and our community and invite you to sign up for a program, attend an event, volunteer to help others, to get involved! The more you’re involved, the more value is added to your membership, the more the YJCC means to you—and the more the YJCC means to the community we love. So what’s in store? Some of our favorite events, including our Spring Gala and Bobbie Berkley YJCC Golf Outing, are back, but we’re mixing it up by introducing new venues. The Kelly Miller Circus returns to its usual home on our back field, but moves up a couple of weeks (and down a couple of degrees of temperature, we hope). Our partnership with bergenPAC continues, with musical theater classes for children, while our new Young Leaders’ Club provides sixth graders with insight into issues that impact the world now and well into their future. Our aquatics program is expanding to include prestigious USA Swimming, enabling our competitive swimmers to be in the water year-round. Adults will enjoy a visit from popular author Alyson Richman, as well as Brilliant Brunches, a stellar event that brings generations together for a fascinating program. We are excited to be introducing a new health and wellness series, Mindfulness Journey, an opportunity for self-discovery and mind-body awareness. You’ll notice that we’ve included some information about summer programs in this Program Guide— summer art and ceramics classes, Nursery School Vacation Station— not only to entice, but to help you plan. We know you look forward, too, and summer will be here before we know it! Get out your calendars—the future is NOW! B’shalom, Gary S. While embracing Jewish values and heritage, the YJCC maintains an inclusive environment, celebrating diversity and welcoming the community at large to enhance mind, body and spirit through cultural, educational and recreational opportunities, without regard to race, religion or ability. OUR MISSION AT WORK Early Childhood Education “…enrich and strengthen families” A study by Mark Rosen, Ph.D. of the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University outlined the high significance of the first years of a child’s life in cementing family patterns and friendships. Who needs a study?! Ask anyone whose child attended our David Rukin Early Childhood Center Nursery School and you’ll hear about the “friends for life” their children have made. In addition, the children, along with their parents, put down roots in a community of warm, caring individuals. Our Mission 2 Our nursery school excels at nurturing our children, enabling them to experience Judaism with all their senses while they explore, create, question and learn about themselves and the entire world. Self-awareness and self-esteem are developed while intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills are cultivated, setting the groundwork for a lifetime of educational success. For information about our Nursery School, please contact Amy Nelson at (201) 666-6610, ext. 5662, anelson@yjcc.org. Special Needs “…maintains an inclusive environment…without regard to race, religion or ability” The YJCC offers children and teens with special needs year-round opportunities to reinforce school experiences, develop social and life skills and enhance self-esteem through creative, social and recreational activities. Innovative classes specifically for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder model social interaction, language and communication, and behavior by utilizing “peer buddies” and age-appropriate activities. Our S.A.I.L. program for those over 21 propels young adults with developmental disabilities towards independence and personal growth. Significantly, it is the philosophy of the YJCC that has enabled our special needs program to flourish. We celebrate diversity, maintain an inclusive environment and seek new ways to open our doors to all. This spirit of inclusion benefits not only those with special needs but our entire community. To volunteer in our Special Needs department, please contact Gina Wellington at (201) 666-6610, ext. 5810, gwellington@yjcc.org. Senior Adults “…meaningful experiences at every age and stage of life” Successful aging, studies show, is dependent upon healthy relationships along with healthy eating and exercise. Our senior adults have come to the right place! We offer opportunities to get involved, express creative inclinations, exercise the mind and body and achieve a sense of belonging to a very special community of people. The YJCC’s senior lunch program serves nutritious, hot, kosher lunches twice a week at a nominal cost. The senior lunch, subsidized through the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey and the U.S.D.A., is more than a meal: Gathering around the table provides a great opportunity to socialize with peers. Monthly blood pressure check and regular nutrition programs are provided in partnership with The Valley Hospital. Body, mind and spirit are nourished at the YJCC. To volunteer in our Senior Adult department, please contact Wendy Fox at (201) 666-6610, ext. 5820, wfox@yjcc.org. EARLY CHILDHOOD Nurturing children while supporting parents is the mission of the YJCC’s David Rukin Early Childhood Center. While our Early Childhood program is located in its own wing with bright, colorful classrooms and an exceptional outside playground and play area, the children benefit from the entire YJCC facility, including the gym and pool. And they are fortunate to be in an atmosphere of warmth and community to which the YJCC is dedicated. Our Nursery School is licensed and accredited by the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Youth and Family Services. YJCC membership is required to participate in Nursery School. New YJCC families enrolling 2-year-olds for the 2015–2016 school year receive 50% off a family membership. Philosophy We enable and empower your child to develop physically, socially and cognitively, while nurturing your child’s selfawareness, self-esteem, intellectual curiosity and critical-thinking skills in a safe, caring environment. Curriculum Our developmentally appropriate curriculum recognizes individual differences and the unique pace at which each child develops. Readiness skills are developed in reading, writing, math and science, while children express themselves creatively through art, music, movement and language. Staff Experienced, certified teachers maintain membership with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation’s largest organization for establishing excellence in early childhood classrooms. Their dedication, creativity, enthusiasm and affection for children are hallmarks of our program. Facility Our nursery school wing, with brightly decorated hallways, colorful classrooms and an exciting experiential playground is augmented by the YJCC’s gymnasium and indoor pools. Our 3- and 4-year olds swim weekly under the supervision of the YJCC’s professional staff. Jewish Heritage Our children learn about Jewish customs and participate in Jewish holiday celebrations. They learn respect for others, compassion and kindness, especially through various collections for disadvantaged families. Early Childhood 4 Our Parents: Communication and Participation We strive to provide regular avenues for communication and are always available to hear your comments and concerns. We recognize that communication helps create a partnership with parents that enhances the education of each child. Our Nursery School Parent Association is a vibrant arm of our program, and there are ample opportunities for involvement in Nursery School activities, as well as those in the YJCC community. The friendships endure and even prosper, but also underscore the differences in their fates. I have to. I make my living out of John Wayne." Hear about his life and times, with a slide show, lecture, and music of the era. AQUATICS Jason Schmeltzer has been coaching at the highest levels for the last 10 years. Working in New York, Arizona and New Jersey, he has coached over 25 state champions and swimmers who have received scholarships to NCAA schools. In 2012, while coaching in Arizona, one of his high school and club swimmers qualified and swam at the Olympic trials. That same year, he worked with two Mexico national team swimmers preparing for the London Olympic trials. Jason Schmeltzer AQUATICS MANAGER jschmeltzer@yjcc.org x5750 Aquatics 24 The YJCC’s aquatics program provides children an opportunity to learn and grow within our Little Sharks Swim School and pre-competitive swim program, then advance to our competitive Bergen Sharks and USA Swimming Wave-Sharks teams. We provide a safe environment with experienced, well-trained instructors and staff for all age groups, beginning at six months. Main Pool Kiddie Pool • 6 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitive-style pool • 3’6” to 5’6” deep • Average water temperature is between 82-83 degrees • 1 mile = 72 lengths/36 laps • 3/4 mile = 54 lengths/27 laps • 1/2 mile = 36 lengths/18 laps • 1/4 mile = 18 lengths/9 laps. • Diving is permitted only for instructional and competitive purposes under the supervision of a YJCC swim instructor or coach. • • • • 400 square foot pool 1'6" to 2'6" deep Average water temperature is 90-92 degrees Closed when swim lessons are being conducted Pool Rules and Regulations Children 6 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult (18 or older) who is in the water with them at all times. Children between 6 and 9 may be in the kiddie pool without an adult, but must be accompanied by an adult when in the main pool. ALL children 12 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the pool area at all times to ensure proper supervision. For everyone’s health and safety and in order to maintain the cleanliness of the pools and deck area, please remember the following: All persons must take a soap shower before entering either the main pool or the kiddie pool. New Jersey State Health Department codes require the enforcement of this regulation in ALL public and private swimming facilities in an effort to minimize the bacteriological levels and optimize our method of disinfecting and sanitizing the pools. No street shoes, sneakers or strollers are permitted on the pool deck. Dirt and bacteria are tracked onto the pool deck, creating an unsanitary environment for swimmers who are walking barefoot. Anyone with hair shoulder-length or longer should wear a swimming cap to help prevent clogs in our filter and vacuum system. Disposable diapers are not permitted in either pool. Children not yet toilet trained must wear swim diapers underneath swimsuits and are not permitted in the main pool. Disposable diapers disintegrate when they become saturated with water. They are then sucked into the filter system and vacuum, clogging them and causing damage. When an accident occurs, it is necessary to close the pool in order to properly clean it. Bandages, band-aids and medicated patches may not be worn in either pool. Once wet, these coverings fall off and clog filters and vacuum. They are also unsanitary and possibly infectious. Any person with open cuts, wounds or blisters is not permitted to use either pool. Inflatable toys, rafts, swimmies, tubes, etc. are not permitted in either pool. Children who depend on these devices are at risk for serious injury if the device fails or the child gets out and goes underwater. Kick boards, barbells, noodles, etc. are only to be used in their intended manner and are NOT lifesaving devices. If being used improperly, a lifeguard will remove them from the pool. Little Sharks Swim School Classes Swimming is difficult—but worth the effort to learn properly. Water safety and rules are taught according to age and must be followed in and out of the water. Each session is 5 classes.
