I
Welcome to St. Michael Church
n a world polluted by noise, we should be able to expect the privilege of
silence for meditation and preparation as we enter the space set aside for
our public worship. In that spirit, we ask you for silence and offer the devotional aids below for your use as you await the start of the service and during the prelude.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Everlasting God, we bless you that you have brought us to the mountaintop
and fed us with the life and light of your Son. Send us in his name from this
place to bring light into dark corners, healing where lives are torn, and nourishment to every hungry heart, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord.
Amen.
Prayers Before Worship
O Lord God almighty, we remember on this day your mighty grace which
turned the heart of a great enemy of our Lord Jesus Christ. You brought Paul
from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to faith in Jesus. For the
conversion of the Apostle Paul by the visitation of Jesus we thank you.
Amen.
BLESSING
O God, as you called Saul, the persecutor of the Church, to be the Apostle
Paul, who proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, grant that
we may always hear your call of us. May we be true to your calling and
count everything as loss for the gain of knowing Christ Jesus as our Savior.
Amen.

POSTLUDE
In the days after the Epiphany of Our Lord we commemorate not only Paul's
seeing the light but his saintly effort thereafter at being the light. Having our
eyes opened by the Spirit of God in holy baptism, having been enlightened
by the word read and proclaimed in the assembly, and having regained our
strength in the Lord's supper, we too are converted—turned again to follow
in God's way.
+++SENDING+++
God the Father, light-creator; God the Son, Light from Light; and God the
Holy Spirit, light-revealer, bless you and + give you peace.
Amen.

3
With this bread and cup
we remember your Word dwelling among us,
full of grace and truth.
We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection.
We look with hope for his coming.
Come, Lord Jesus.
Holy God, we long for your Spirit.
Come among us.
Bless this meal.
May your Word take flesh in us.
Awaken your people.
Fill us with your light.
Bring the gift of peace on earth.
Come, Holy Spirit.
All praise and glory are yours,
Holy One of Israel,
Word of God incarnate,
Power of the Most High,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE
LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
COMMUNION
Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive
communion the assembly follows the choir, approaching the altar rail by the
center aisle in two rows. Individuals fill in at the next open spot at the rail on
their side of the aisle. You may kneel or stand. The pastor will come around and
place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine.
You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the pouring chalice.
To receive from the pouring chalice take a glass from the tray at the front of the
center aisle. After you use the glass you may place it in the tray on the window
sill as you return to your seat by the side aisle.

PREFACE
. . . we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE
Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:
Blessed are you for the birth of creation.
Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light.
Blessed are you for your promise to your people.
Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams.
Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will.
Blessed are you for your Son Jesus,
the Word made flesh.
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
12
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray.
O God, by the preaching of your apostle Paul you have caused the light of
the gospel to shine throughout the world. Grant that we may follow his example and be witnesses to the truth of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
Amen.

+++WORD+++
FIRST READING
The Service continues with the Prayers of Intercession.
Acts 9:1–22
Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of
the Lord, went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men
or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3Now as he was going
along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed
around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul,
Saul, why do you persecute me?" 5He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The
reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6But get up and enter
the city, and you will be told what you are to do." 7The men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no
one. 8Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could
see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.
9
For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
10
Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said
to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered, "Here I am, Lord." 11The Lord
said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of
Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying,
12
and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his
hands on him so that he might regain his sight." 13But Ananias answered,
"Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done
to your saints in Jerusalem; 14and here he has authority from the chief
priests to bind all who invoke your name." 15But the Lord said to him, "Go,
for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; 16I myself will show him how
much he must suffer for the sake of my name." 17So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord
Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may
regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." 18And immediately
something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he
got up and was baptized, 19and after taking some food, he regained his
strength.
For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, 20and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, "He is the Son of
God." 21All who heard him were amazed and said, "Is not this the man who
made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he
not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief
priests?" 22Saul became increasingly more powerful and confounded the
Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah.

SECOND READING
Galatians 1:11–24
11
For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.
13
You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it. 14I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I
was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. 15But when God,
who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was
pleased 16to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the
Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before me, but I went away at once
into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus.
18
Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and
stayed with him fifteen days; 19but I did not see any other apostle except
James the Lord's brother. 20In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not
lie! 21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, 22and I was still un7
known by sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ; 23they only heard
it said, "The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the
faith he once tried to destroy." 24And they glorified God because of me.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

INSTALLATION OF THE CONGREGATION COUNCIL
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia is sung by all; the choir sings the proper verse, after which everyone
repeats Alleluia.
The following persons, having been elected by the congregation to positions
of leadership, are asked to present themselves at the altar: Maria Archer,
Greg Darr, Duane Daub, Nancy Eberly, Mike Ennis, Elizabeth Parker, Angela Tanczos, Dan Tosheff and Ken Umbenhauer.
In Holy Baptism our Lord Jesus Christ liberated you from sin and death and
made you members of his Church. Through Word and Sacrament you have
been nurtured in faith. I ask you, together with all who are here gathered, to
confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we are baptized.
APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
This Jesus | God raised up,*
and of that all of | us are witnesses.
Luke 21:10-19
GOSPEL
The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
10
Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom; 11there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines
and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven.
12
"But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you;
they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought
before kings and governors because of my name. 13This will give you an
opportunity to testify. 14So make up your minds not to prepare your defense
in advance; 15for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. 16You will be betrayed even
by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of
you to death. 17You will be hated by all because of my name. 18But not a
hair of your head will perish. 19By your endurance you will gain your
souls."
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

elw 509
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Saint Paul writes:
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.
There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served. There are
different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives to everyone
ability for particular service. The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in
each person, for the good of all.
You have been elected to positions of leadership and trust in this congregation.
