VNF Live Migration
• Live migration = move a VM from a host to another while it
runs
• Example use cases
• Clear a failing host
• Empty a host for maintenance
• Move instances to balance load
• OpenStack supports live migration via additional
configuration
• We studied the effects on migrating a VNFs with KVM
hypervisor within an OpenStack cloud deployment
MME Live Migration
• MME
• Ping the active MME instance from a VM inside the
testbed with 1ms interval
• Measure packet loss and delays during live migration
• Results
• Packet loss range from 3 to 20 packets
• With low packet loss, the response delay up to 150ms
S-/P-GW Live Migration
• The GW on the data transfer path
• Measure the effects during an active file transfer
• Metric: TCP throughput during live migration
• Downtime varies between 0.2 and 2 seconds
• Worse case scenario
• 2 second gap in all data transfer
Next steps
• Extend the testbed with new commercial eNodeB
• Replace backhaul based on Alix switches into higher performance
switches
• Performance testing with video streaming to overload the network
• Test handover scenarios and migration with high load
THANKS!
