Over the last couple of weeks we have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of absences
cess and our various curriculum components, it is important that students be in attendance
and on time on a daily basis. There is no substitute for direct teacher instruction and class
interaction, regardless of homework availability. Furthermore, children who fall behind in
their work find it increasingly difficult to get back into the school routine. Please keep
in mind that the average student only misses eight to ten days for the entire
school year. The above should be taken into consideration, especially if your child is
missing school for reasons other than those illnesses which affect classroom performance.
Our goal is to enhance the learning experience for each student at Enders-Salk, which in
turn can only be done if your child is in school every day.
This goal can only be accomplished with your continued help and support.

Read Across Enders 2015 We need your help!!
Read Across Enders is a fun day to promote literacy in a fun and exciting way. The students
are able to rotate to 3 different classrooms. The teachers read a book and then do an exciting game/activity/or craft! This is an event that we have done for 5 years now and the students absolutely love it! We need your help! Read Across Enders 2015 will be on Friday,
March 20th from 9:00-11:30am. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Mrs. Montalbano at katherinemontalbano@sd54.org or call me at 847-357-6379 and let me know
who your child is and what grade level you would like to help out with. I will then send out a
schedule when the event gets closer to let you know your station.
Book Fair Thank You!
Our Winter Scholastic Book fair was great! We were able to raise money to buy books for
the Enders-Salk Library. I would like to thank my parent volunteers for all of their help
with making our book fair run smoothly for our students and staff. A big thank you goes
out to Nan Jevtic and Chris Weber for stepping up to co-chair the book fair once again.
Thank you to Adriana Andrade, Maureen Brennan, Julia Davis, Denise Freehling, Dawn
Klasmann, Amanda Macholl, Emily Meyer, Megan Meyer, Eileen Morris, and Byron Tull for
volunteering your time!

NOTE FROM THE NURSE : ( SOURCE : CDC A CADEMY OF P EDIATRICTS )
The health benefits of playing outdoors in winter!
Contrary to what many people believe, medical experts agree that outdoor play for children is healthy
and essential, even in winter! Going outside to run, jump, yell, and wiggle allows children to use their
large muscles and work off extra energy. Breathing the fresh air is healthier for children than keeping
them inside a closed building where germs can easily spread. The indoor circulation of germs and bacteria is much more harmful to your child than playing outside. According the American Academy of Pediatrics, even children who are mildly ill, but active, should go outside for short periods in the cold air to
stimulate their immune systems.
There are many health benefits to playing outside in winter (if the weather is not severe-< 0 degrees and
children are properly dressed) Playing outside in the cold:
 strengthens the immune system by allowing your child an escape from indoor germs and bacteria and
helps form a resistance to allergies.
 stimulates your child’s imagination
 promotes problem solving skills
 promotes better sleep
 provides Vitamin D:
 provides some of the 60 minutes of recommended physical exercise that children need daily
According the CDC, staying active for at least 60 min. a day can help children:

Improve their health

Do better in school.

Improve their fitness.

Grow stronger.

Have fun playing with friends.

Feel happier.

Maintain a healthy body weight.

Improve their self-confidence.

Learn new skills.
So think about bundling up, and heading outdoors to stay healthy!!!
