There is no substitute for direct teacher instruction and class interaction, regardless of homework availability. Furthermore, children who fall behind in their work find it increasingly difficult to get back into the school routine. Please keep in mind that the average student only misses eight to ten days for the entire school year. The above should be taken into consideration, especially if your child is missing school for reasons other than those illnesses which affect classroom performance. Our goal is to enhance the learning experience for each student at Enders-Salk, which in turn can only be done if your child is in school every day. This goal can only be accomplished with your continued help and support. B ALDY N EWS P AGE 5 A NOTE FROM THE NURSE : ( SOURCE : CDC A CADEMY OF P EDIATRICTS ) The health benefits of playing outdoors in winter! Contrary to what many people believe, medical experts agree that outdoor play for children is healthy and essential, even in winter! Going outside to run, jump, yell, and wiggle allows children to use their large muscles and work off extra energy. Breathing the fresh air is healthier for children than keeping them inside a closed building where germs can easily spread. The indoor circulation of germs and bacteria is much more harmful to your child than playing outside. According the American Academy of Pediatrics, even children who are mildly ill, but active, should go outside for short periods in the cold air to stimulate their immune systems. There are many health benefits to playing outside in winter (if the weather is not severe-< 0 degrees and children are properly dressed) Playing outside in the cold: strengthens the immune system by allowing your child an escape from indoor germs and bacteria and helps form a resistance to allergies. stimulates your child’s imagination promotes problem solving skills promotes better sleep provides Vitamin D: provides some of the 60 minutes of recommended physical exercise that children need daily According the CDC, staying active for at least 60 min. a day can help children: Improve their health Do better in school. Improve their fitness. Grow stronger. Have fun playing with friends. Feel happier. Maintain a healthy body weight. Improve their self-confidence. Learn new skills. So think about bundling up, and heading outdoors to stay healthy!!!
